CHENNAI, JAN. 29. The music director, M. S. Viswanathan, and the actress, Vanishree, were presented with the Madhavapeddi Satyam and the Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi awards by the Siva Foundation at a function here on Friday.

Felicitating the awardees, S. P. Balasubramaniam, singer, recalled, "When I was young, singer S. Janaki encouraged me to come to Chennai and try my luck. Music director Kodandapani gave me the first song and M. S. Viswanathan was instrumental in making what I am today." Singer and president of the Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, P. B. Sreenivas, read out a Telugu poem.

Team effort

Mr. Viswanathan said songs were not a one-man show but a team effort. "I may compose a song, but it should be sung in the right way by the singer and the musicians must all do their jobs in coordination. The actor has to do an efficient job ... only then the song will become a hit. This award goes to all of them."

Ms. Vanishree recalled that it was Madhavapeddi Satyam who encouraged her when she entered the
field. Other awardees were folk singers V. Anasuya Devi and V. Seethadevi; R. S. Indirajith, manager, Sri Arunaachaleshwarar temple, Tiruvannamalai; Lakshmi Rajarathnam, novelist; S. Varadarajan, educationist; Father Rajkumar, social and family counsellor; Anitha Guha, dance choreographer and Kutty, hero of the film `Dancer.'

Madhavapeddi Murthy, president, Siva Foundation, proposed a vote of thanks.
