Dear Friends,

How many songs MM composed in the raga pure kalayani and with kalayani as a base with some variations? It could be many. Let me try to list some of them which are in different style to show how he handled the same raga for different styles.

Carnatic style composition:
Vetkamai irukudhadi
Mugathil Mugam Paarkaalam
Varuvan Vadivelan
Isai kettal Puvi Asaindhaadum

Light Music Style:
Athikkaai kaai kaai (with slight mix of ‘ma1’)
Konja Neram yennai Marandhen
Madurayil parandha meen kodiyai
Kalyanamam kutchriyam

Western Style:
Kan Pona Pokkile Kaal Pogalama (This is in the Russian Bale style. I read in a book that Kalyani raga is normally used extensively for composition in the country Hungery. There could be some connection between Russian Bale and Hungary also. Who knows? This could have influenced him to compose this song in this raga. However there is slight mix of other swarams that is not in Kalyani like ‘ma1’ and ‘da1’. Of course the interlude chorus humming goes far beyond kalyani)

Regards,

N Y MURALI

Dear Murali Sir,
Does the song 'Konja neram' also (?) resemble the raaga Hamir Kalyani? Songs based on the Hamir Kalyani sound somewhat similar to 'Konja neram'. Please explain.
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan

Dear Balaji
I am extremely indebted to you for facilitating Shri Jayaram's terrific posting earlier on MSV's Kalyani[We joined the forum later]--Twenty songs-- each a jewel in single raga--MSV has left no hues or shades unpainted---The beauty of musical genius is that none of the songs look similar
What prompted me to acknowledge your posting was lack of acknowledgement for MSV's immortal compositions in this raga. When average Kalyani of IR like Vandhal Mahallakshmiye or Katril varum geethame are praised sky high by the tribe of SPB it is very difficult to take in our strides
Mugathil mugam parkalam was the fore runner in genuine kalyani composition[In Jayaram's list there is an inadvertent error in mention of singer as MLV while it is by TMS-P.Leela]
Of courese the top marks should be awarded to Sondham Eppodhum--Already this song has max. hits in this website --Nothing more need to be added
My personal favourites are
Thulli thirindtha pen onru for its feather touch
Manjalum thanthal malargal thanthal--ladies' special[copied by satyam in its Telugu version]
Azhagenum oviam inge--Fantastic composition & lyrics--unfortunately underplayed by the media--I particularly recommend this one for all MSViars to re-hear and appreciate
After visiting this thread , last one week the recorder in my memory has been playing these songs continuously whether I drive, work ,play ,relax or sleep
With the result of MSV havoc Kalyani has climbed to top slot in my favourites pushing Mohanam and Hindolam down
Thanks in plenty again to M/S.Balaji and Jayaram

Cordially yours
SRS
N.B.--As Mr. Murali would probably endorse one of the greatest film composition in Kalyani was 'Mannavan vandhanadi by KVM

Dear Mr SR Shankar ,
While thanking Mr.Balaji [Mumbai], for suggesting the link to a precious / previous posting, you have acknowledged the 'terrific' posting by Mr. Jeyaram G1.

The 'terrific' posting referred to by you adores the page numbers 215-217 of Chapter 7 item number 41 with the title Music, Melody, Magic, Mystery and Mastery in our book.
It places me at a state of freedom to assume that you are still in the process of reading the book"A Music Bridge Between Millennia" and a solace that as the editor , I have accommodated the worthy piece in the compilation.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Warm regards K.Raman, Madurai.
