Dear Ragavendran,
Your reference to "Maadi veettu yezhai" makes me ponder over a bit, since there is a reference to SPB. Are there two films on the same name? or Is it that your reference is to PBS? If you are referring to the film by JP Chandrababu, probably it is PBS. This was one of those ill fated movies with a very long incubation. Film history has it that all deeply incubated movies create an early euphoria that falls off rapid enough to be rated ephemeral for the very movie itself. Greater pity is that songs in such movies do not enjoy the scale of popularity they deserve. Please clarify my doubt whenever convenient to you.

Dear Professor,
J.P. Chandrababu, one of the greatest stars, should have succeeded as one of the greatest producers, had he been able to complete the film and had it seen the limelight. One or two songs were also recorded but due to the reasons best known to the producer, the film was unfortunately dropped. Chandrababu has written a series of articles on his miserable experiences he underwent as a producer of Madi Veettu Ezhai in a magazine Filmalaya. This was in early 60s. However, the name Madi Veettu Ezhai became a household name even without the progress of the film because of the hype it created. This was used in the 1980s by Sri Karunanidhi for his production under the banner Poompuhar Productions, starring Sivaji Ganesan (in dual roles), Sujatha, Sripriya among others. This film was scripted by Kalaignar, and music by our Mellisai Mannar. The songs were ever green numbers. This song was sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and P. Susila.
With regards,
Sincerely,
Raghavendran _________________ Visit my website for Viswanthan-Ramamurthi

Dear Mr.Ragavendran,
Thank you for the fine-detailed clarification on MV Y of 1980. I was only aware of the abortive item of JPC. Anyway it is interesting to recall that MK as producer had trusted MSV as late as 1980 for music. Why it assumes significance is, on some of his earlier products he has availed of TKR and [MSV for MGR starrers] only very late turned to later MDs. Thank you for the clarification.

Dear Mr Raghavendran,
Thanks for the interesting info. Even I was not aware of the MVY of MK. It is very nice of you to get us such details from decades old magazines. Pls keep it up.
Dear Prof, MK opted for our great MSV in the year 1987 also for the film "Needhikku Dhandanai", which had two unforgettable numbers - "Chinnanjiru Kiliye Kannamma" (the Bharathiyar song) and "Paavai Meedhu Paarijatham Thoova Vendum", a club dance number which interestingly MSV allotted to S Janaki.
Regards,
Venu Soundar |

Dear Venu Soundar Sir,
Thank you for the compliments. In fact when the film Madi Veettu Yezhai was released on 22nd August 1981 at the Midland Theatre, Anna Salai, I displayed a chart prepared by me glorifying (i) Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan, (ii) Dr. Kalaignar and (iii) our Mellisai Mannar MSV. It was prepared with the dialogues in the words of Kalaignar, i.e. I prepared the text as if it was written by Kalaignar, starting with Udanpirappe. Because after a long time, Sivaji and Kalaignar joined for this film. And even before the film was released the songs became hit and cassettes sold like hot cakes. And there is another song glorifying Sivaji starting as Singa Nadai, which is an evergreen foot tapping number. I saw it on the first day and the bgm (as usual) spoke volumes of Mellisai Mannar, particularly in the climax.
Regarding the film Needhikku Thandanai, it was the film in which Swarnalatha was introduced by MM as a playback singer in Tamiz.

Dear Raghavendran Sir,
Another beauty and not so frequently heard one. The slow, soft movement of this song, unhurried PS,...
Maybe we should discuss more about the type and style of beats that have been produced by the percussionists of MM. It will lead to a mammoth collection as there are too many to list!! For example, the congo, bangoose, type of instruments have been mainstay of our MM and these have initiated varieties of imaginations due to their amazing combination and sound effects. Not to say about Tabla and dholak....they are even more colourful!
