We've talked about Masters songs in various threads written by Various lyricists.
This thread is to talk about Master's songs with veteran Vaali.

Vaali never fails to credit MSV for his success. Here is a small attempt to cpature all the songs by these 2 legends.

I'm starting the topic with a great female duet

"Kadavul thandha irumalargal" from Iru malargal by P.Suseela & L.R.Eswari.

During 50's female duet was very rare. It was done whenever there is Competition (be it dance/song etc) and not on a usual basis

But Master's creativity and ofcourse Directors creatitivity brought out many female duets by PS & LRE. These 2 churned out many many duets and all are classic duets and ever lingers in our mind.

"Kadavul thandha Iru malargal" very APT Situational song

Sivaji's lover Padmini is back as his daughter's teacher and meets with his wife K.R.Vijaya. KRV doesnt know the truth and there comes the song

Padmini sings about how she came in his life while KRV sings how she was given life .. See how vaali handles both. I'm impressed very much by the LRE portion.

"alaiyil mithantha malar kandu
athan mEl karuNai manam koNdu
thalaiyil iRaivan sUdik koNdAn
thAnE adhanai sErththuk koNdAn
kuzalil sUdiya oru malarum
kOvil sErntha oru malarum
iraNdum vAzvil perumai peRum
idhayam enRum amaidhi peRum"

Watch and listen to this MSV-VAALI MAGIC

Naan kaatru vaanga ponen from kalangarai vilakkam.

MGR-Vaali-MSV a trio which had more success. So let's talk about a best song from this trio.

Kalangarai Vilakkam directed by K.Shankar is an album to cherish. All Variety in one movie. MEllisai Mannargal gave a blast. Variety did not stop with the songs but with the lyricists as well.

Paavendhar Bharathidasan's Sange Muzhangu depcited the Tamil culture and it's credibility

Kannadasan's Ennai Marandhathen thendrale is just cant get better and what a rendition by Isaiyarasi.

the young assistant of Kannadasan Panju Arunachalam got his first song in this album and what a class was the song. Simple lyrics by Panju(following KD in every line) and PS,TMS's amazing rendition made Pon ezhil poothadhu pudhuvaanil a memorable song tilldate.

and here comes Vaali with his vibrant entry saying i am no less to others
"Naan kaatru vaanga ponen oru kavithai vaangi vandhen "

Very romantic song on the best romantic pair on screen
MGR-Sarojadevi

Dear Mr.Rajeshkumar,
Way back in 1965, when TFM lovers were keeping fingers crossed as to the individual merits of MSV and TKR,both had a brief lull [post separation] making the wait more agonizing. Pat came the answer through 'kalangarai viLakkam' where MSV emphatically reiterated his supremacy putting to rest all scope for any further debate. Thank you for your write up on the movie where you have hinted at 'mannargaL' where the lone 'mannar' figured.
Thank you Warm regards K.Raman Madurai

The combination has given innumerable memorable songs. Vaali knows MSV requirements and MSV is aware that vaali can write/revise the wordings as he(MSV) want to. Their perfect understanding and respect one on the other is one of the the main reason songs of this combination are outstanding and has stood the test of time.

Take any song from the film Padagotti - they were excellently written and composed brilliantly. Likewise there are lot many. If I am not wrong all the songs of this film was written by Vaali.

I feel appropriate to add in connection with the topic an information that I read long back in Filmfare magazine about Shankar Jaikishan duo of Hindi film music. Sailendra and Hasrath Jaipuri wrote most songs for this music directors. In almost all the films they scored music this writer combination had worked. They had an some sort of agreement - romance related songs by Hasrat and serious/pathos by Sailendra. But in between Hasrat also wrote a few pathos which became super duper hit (example - Thum mujhe bula na paovoge from the film Pagla kahina ka) Sailendra was so pleased that he even suggested Hasrat can be given a free hand. This was agreed by SJ. Thus due respect and perfect understanding between the Music director and song writer not only paves way for good friendship but also shows in their creations.

Dear friends,
To add to the above comments, there were even incidents when the duo (Shankar-Jaikishen) shared the lyricists too to suit the situation. Of which, Jaikishen was said to have been influenced by our MM and probably included those strains in his compositions or orchestra. But, to come back to the original discussion, the comparison to MM-Vaali is appropriate.
Regards,
Sai Saravanan
