Dear All,

While we actually are covering the movie KOT , I thought it will be appropriate to also write about the actual KOT and his entire life history and hence this post….

VOC was born on 5.9.1872 , in a town called Ottapidaram , part of Tuticorin…first son of the family and his Father was a leading Advocate. He had his Schooling at St.Xaviers and Caldwell, both in Tuticorin and then at thirunelveli Hindu College High School. Completed Law in Trichy and also Pleadership and started practicing in Ottapidaram . The spark for the patriotic feeling and seeds were sown at Swami Vivekananda Ashram Chennai by one saint.

Needless to mention here Mahakavi and VOC became thick friends during his Chennai visit….

It is pertinent to mention here that those days, there were different schools of thought towards liberation …..VOC was largely influenced by Shri Bala Gangadara Tilak, the great man from Maratha region who actually was the pioneer in the quest for freedom and independence….so, the last decade of the 19th century was the starting point for VOC ….Inspired by Tilak, VOC also joined Indian National Congress ( which unfortunately is the same Congress of today which is facing multiple charges on corruption on monumental scale ) Though VOC actually joined Congress in 1905, he was already a representative of Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai for Chennai ( which was called Madras Presidency then )

Our movie also starts from this stage……

All the events portrayed in the movie are perfect except the final stages of his life….

After coming out of the prison life, his professional status gets disqualified and he could not practice….he migrates to Chennai along with family and was down to such a level that he was managing a fuel and provision shop.. this was how the period up to 1919 was passed..from here onwards, he started penning books and articles….

He also had difference of opinion and principles and moved from INC and shifted to Coimbatore.

One should admire VOC’s fighting spirit and survival instincts here……he had even got employed as a Bank officer for sometime ! Ultimately, VOC also got back his professional status and got legal practice back ….Here we should appreciate one Mr. Justice Wallace who actually gave the verdict in favour of VOC considering the fact that it was British rule then…..so, there were some good and honest ( unbiased ) Britishers existed too then …..
VOC finally shifted his practice at Kovilpatti and after some years, again joined and exited INC…

The final years were in Tuticorin….

VOC was born 3 years after Mahatma Gandhiji… but joined the freedom movement much earlier but sadly died before seeing it.. Indeed VOC and Mahatma had exchanged some communication between 1915-16 ( this was Mahatma’s initial years ) and Gandhiji had even tried to arrange for some funds to support VOC to fight his legal battle …however, VOC belonged to Tilak’s school of philosophy and was not supportive of Mahatma’s way of approach to freedom though he continued with INC…

What is really praiseworthy about this great man is his ability to compete with the British corporates and having successfully encountered a commercial war and that too of a mammoth investment in Shipping business where the risks associated are phenomenal…I infer that this trait was in his blood ….Father being an Advocate and VOC himself a Lawyer….he must have been supremely self confident person ..

Like most of the freedom fighters, VOC was a selfless person, having given away his hard earned wealth and personal life…..
