http://youtu.be/OXb-MnTstR0

You can notice the variation of note Ni2 at 0.38, 1.57, 3.07, 3.26. In rest of the places it is note Ni1. So instead of going to Ni1 from Sa he goes to Ni2 from Sa and then goes to Ni1 which makes this variation as a reduced tone implying the feel of 'mayakkam'

Dear Murali,

Mayakkam postings are very informative. P Suseelas indru vandha indha Mayakkam is a great tullal number. This is one of the song that sufficently demonstates her capacity in this segment. Suseela is a versatile singer and there is inexplicble charm in her voice.

Time permitting can you analyse the mayakka prayogam in this song.

Yes, NYM......Chromatic passages are used to denote intoxication or a state that renders the character that sings inebriated. Just for the benefit of ease of understanding of other readers, a chromatic slide happens when you play successive notes one after the other as in playing a black note after a white note and so on. The same effect does not come through when you play a white note after a white note or a black note after playing one. "ellOrum pArka" has this chromatic slide at the at the end of the pallavi as Bharathi sings this after downing enough spirits to slosh her Smile
Now, there are cases where MSV has composed a prelude for a song based on the song's pallavi. One such song is "angE mAlai mayakkam yArukkAga" from ooty varai uravu. Please check out the prelude of the song which is dominated by violin passages sandwiched between spurts of shrieks from the flute prompted by mandolin strums. The mesmeric violin passages on the violin have been made to describe a chromatic path at important junctures only to signify the intoxicating evening that the song setting is in, as described by poet in the first line of the pallavi !!!!

Dear Vatsan,
Indeed 'ange maalai mayakkam' is a great observation. I heard the prelude umpteen times especially for the opening mandolin piece before the string of violins which give a feeling that two love birds are in playfulness. rightfully MSV will again come back to the mandolin for taking the pallavi. But yes you are right. the string section gives a seductive feeling showing the atmosphere is itself in sedative mood.

Just giving the youtube link for the benefit of viewers.

Just heard the prelude again....it is full of chromatic phrases...the violin passage...mayakkam tharum phrases.....am reminded of yet another number in Bhama Vijayam when the plotting wife Kanchana is forced to drink the milk containing an aphrodisiac, something she had prepared for her husband herself. The intoxicated Kanchana sings "ninaithAl sirippu varum".........S G1 P M2...is the swaram pattern the song traces when the song touches the immediately preceding chromatic note after P, which is M2, that is the state of being sozzled up clearly portrayed Smile Readers can listen to the dip at the word sirippu.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSnnSKLMVnw is the link for the song........when PS giggles through the arohanam and avarohanam, you know it is for the word "sirippu" in the pallavi Smile

Continuing with Mayakkam ...... Paavalan paadiya pudhumai pennai ( Mohd Bin Tuglaq ) has that slide ...for the word Kudiyirukkum ! Again, there is a deviation from the so called Kalyani ( D2 ) to slide back !

Oops.... Hope Mr.Vaidy will not read this Smile

Dear Murali,

Used to love the prelude of Ange malai mayakkam. Glad to note that, the instrument used for opening peice is Mandolin. Never felt assured in identfying Mandolin, as it sounds very different from what we hear through U SRINIVAS. Can u list out some MM songs where Mandoin was put to use.

Sivasankaran....there are several.....lets talk about the most effective pieces......the first and the third interludes of
pAl vaNNam paruvam kaNdu" start with mandolin notes. There is a generous sprinkling of mandolin notes in the second interlude as well but it is easier to point out those in the first and third BGMs. The shortest but yet the most tellingly apt couple of strums on the mandolin are after the line "adiyENdi asattu peNNE" , which is the pallavi."pAlirukkum kiNNam", the commencement of the stanza in "chithhiramE nilladi" has a strikingly mood inducing set of mandolin notes as its prompt to start off. If you actually get hold of the re-recording in the movie that precedes this number in veNNirAdai....you will note that MSV has already set the tone for this impending number by playing those very mind absorbing notes on the mandolin in appropriate intervals amidst other instruments...yes, those very notes that served as the prompt for the above stated charanam. "pAdatha pAttellAm pAda vanthAL" has mandolin as the prompt to start the pallavi, though Anandan would be playing the guitar Smile Ahhh....yet another number ...."Andonru pOnAl vayathonru pOgum" also has mandolin before the staccato piccolo pieces kick-start the pallavi

Dear Siva,
To add the exhaustive list Vatsan gave I can add a couple more. The catchy interlude in the song 'roja malare rajakumari' after the humming and connecting to charanam.

The counter melody after PS sings 'nilave unnai arriven ange nere Or naal varuven"(enna enna vaarthigalo) is the mandolin piece of course combined with other instruments.

Aahh...how could we forget the ambience producing mandolin pieces in the prelude of "thoothu sella oru thozhi" !!!!! The prelude starts with a majestic, statement making strums on the mandolin (reminiscent now of the tune around "ulagam engum orE mozhi" which happened a few years later, down the line), a ripper of start that sets the mood with a spate of violins following them, continuing with the good work of augmenting the mood. The mood..........could be a mixture of a feel of a sophisticated teasing game between two ladies set against a scenic local, for sure outdoors, and therefore , plethora of elegance has been instilled. The mandolin can certainly be used to create an atmosphere of intrigue and mystery...

Dear Vatsan, msvpriyan.
Great mandolin pieces unearthed by you from unbeatable melodies. I can add the great mandolin piece in the song 'Naan Kavinganum illai' in which the actor himself uses the mandolin. Such a delightful phrase the mandolin plays the pallavi in different scale.
