|
|
Dear Friends,
I feel it is very important to create a digital library for our beloved MSV's music.
It happened to listen Panathottam songs in record player. I was amazed by the quality of the songs. The available mp3 versions are no where near to the clarity of the song.
If we collect the old vinyl records and encode them, we can make a wonderful digital library. By this way, we can take Mellisai Mannar's music to further generations.
I traveled to a village called Chengundrapuram near Sivakasi to meet a person called Sermakani who has collection of old records. I thought it will be good to get the songs recorded through him. But he was not very cooperative. It is the same with Ali Khan in Chennai. But the quality of encoding is not good with Ali Khan. And he charges Rs.250 per cd, which means.. 10-15 songs for Rs.250.
These disappointments made me think about creating digital library for Mellisai Mannar's music.
Is there any such initiative already happening? If so, I would like to be part of it.
I can invest on a record player. If I can get the records, I will encode them. I need your help on getting the record plates.
Can we do this? Can anybody help on getting those record plates?
thanks,
GiRa |

Thanks Vijay sir. It will be helpful if people can lend their records. We can digitally encode and return the records safely. Eagerly waiting to hear from you.
Yesterday's dream was all about record player and records

Our friend Sabesan is having many number of old records and he used to literally cry to make those recorded properly. The advantage is that it has the original film version unlike the radio version which had lot of cuts for time adjustments.
If somebody takes the responsibility to collect and record I shall talk to him to handover. It should be returned to him after the recording.
There are also other friends, I remember one from Thoothukudi, may be we can ask Salem Ganesh.
The point is please let us how much money we need to spend on this conversion. If this is within manageable level we can do certainly.
Plus we can have all these in our site which itself requires enormous face lift.
Well. All these costs money.
Money!!! Money!!! Money!!! It is always Money!!! Money!!! Money!!!
It is a rich man's world.
Unfortunately msvtimes is very poor. |

Sir... this is indeed a very happy and helping information.
What we need first are,
1. Record Player
2. Record Plates
3. Laptop/System to encode
I have a laptop. I'll find out the price for Record Player. If affordable, I will buy it. If Sabesan sir can help with records, I can encode during weekends.
regards,
GiRa |

I spoke to Sabesan already. He is willing to help. his only worry is that these record should not get misplaced as he had taken much pain to collect the records.
He is suggesting that he can spare a room in his rouse where these can be recorded.
If you find it OK you can let me know.
If there is any reservation then also please let me know.
He was also asking about the player.
I shall find if anybody has the player! |

Dear Raghavan & friends,
This is indeed going on between Sabesan and myself for quite a number of years. Before we venture there are some practical difficulties to be faced and initiatives to be made.
1. The old record players with speeds of 78, 33-1/3, 45 rpm are all obsolete and we can not find stylus for the same. A stylus can play at the most 10 to 20 records with perfection of 45 rpm, i.e. two songs in a record. In that case we can use it for about 20 or 30 songs at the most.
2. Availability of stylus is a very difficult thing. For e.g. if we need around 100 to 200 records we should need around 10 to 15 styli. This will not be sufficient to meet our task. Each stylus may cost around Rs.100/- to 200/- depending on the Seller.
3. There are numerous 78 records that need to be transferred to digital format because these versions are very very precious and are of rich nuantic value.
4. Considering the present scenario, I can suggest a possible method:
We now have affinity to latest record players in the market which may cost around 10 to 20000 rupees depending on the features. I learn that they do not depend on stylus but come with some digital mechanism. I also hear that it may play upto 500 to 1000 records depending on the format. This player is compatible with USB port so that we can directly record it in digital format. Then we can have separate storage device for the purpose.
This record player is available in Landmark and if we can come to a conclusion, our Trust can buy these and we can preserve them as a property of the Trust.
Of course this is only a suggestion.
May be others have their own views. _________________ Visit my website for Viswanthan-Ramamurthi

Hi All,
I did a search and bought a record player with USB port. It will record the song as mp3 while playing the record itself.
I have checked the quality, it is good. It records whatever comes from the plate.
I had been occupied with work for the last weeks and couldnt contact.
I will speak to Sabesan sir and see what can be done.
regards,
Ragavan |
