Dear Friends,
Any lover of quality songs especially of the late 1950s -1980s would certainly have perceived some grammar about ideal elements of cine-song composition. I mean to say that the then TFM lovers have been fine-tuned to certain niceties of composition. It is this bunch that stays wedded to quality composition [irrespective of source; sadly none else has made a genuine impact on such quality-sensitive listeners, except for some odd cases that have been neglibly low in frequency].

Therefore, for this audience undue praise heaped on inferior stuff, amuses as much as it irritates. Obviously 'grooming' the minds goes a long way in shaping taste. Once groomed on right lines, every other temptation looks cacophony to say the least.
As for MSV's endeavour, throughout his active career he has never fettered himself to any rigidity. On the contrary, if we carefully tabulate a scientific graph relating to his compositional styles, we would notice he has been a trendsetter for himself , as during the period he was in total control of TFM in every sense of the term. Despite the then non-competitive ambience and the supreme faith that the Industry had on him, he was fruitfully dynamic and liberally experimental while his fellow travellers were satisfying some formula that they had stuck to.
To underscore the contention one can cite instances. For example in that B& W era of 1960s, look at the tunes he gave out in Bagyalakshmi, Veerathirumagan, Pavamannippu and so on. In each case his tunes have been 'mood-elevating' instead of being a filler. As I had mentioned in my last posting , MSV gets a firm grasp of the story line and takes a firm grip of the emotions in a scene which he deals with by his musical treatment.

From what I here of MSV's practice, to the lyric he sets any number of tunes just to be sure that the best comes forth. In this game, MSV respects, the SENTIMENTS OF MOVIE MAKERS, DIRECTORS, LYRICISTS AND ANYONE AROUND as he firmly believes that each one of them is a consumer and it helps to feel the response from them. If need be, he can insert amends just before a session of recording. It is a reflection of QUALITY CONSCIOUSNESS and UNCOMPROMISING ATTITUDE.

Recently I came to know that the song recording of 'Thoodhu solla oru thOzhi illai ena' was over and the orchestra was about to pack up. For some reason MSV felt that the song was not winding up on right form. So, he requested PS to render the pallavi lines to which LRE was asked to sing a parallel a aha aha aha aaa just to give a pleasing end.

It is a case of absolute professionalism that has now been edged out by commercialism. We should also consider the difficulties of 'live recording' where a band of artistes had to perform in unison with no technology to cut and paste.

The lone force that drives MSV's works is his DESIRE FOR QUALITY that ever takes a chunk of time and energy.
