(Understanding a female emotion is the most difficult thing in the world)

Dear Sir,
You have picked another beauty, this time with a village tune, and your expressions have taken us live to the song and scene!
The flute, other instruments, combined with the manly singing of TMS and all the gamakas of PS, are all on one side. I am dragged to the other aspect of our master's creation: the percussion. (I am more biased, as always, towards the percussion, due to my passion!) You have described the gait, the breeze, and the flute. The tabla gives the beats for all these! Oh, what a playing by Tabla Prasad! This is really out of this world! He has brought the slow walk, the gradual pace and all the complete emotions in this song. More than usual, the bass effect is extra in this song, prominently only for the tabla, if you notice the style of playing on the bayan. Very few songs are of this type, so much so that this tune with similar tabla beats, was used again in 'Maampoove' by KJY and PS later (as informed by the tabla player of Chandrabose once).
Excellent choice and beautiful writing, Sir!

Very well written NYM !!! A woman's emotion is felt and not understood, much like Harmony, especially the bass parts in a song Smile Now, let me offer my perspective, the sustain at "sollu" suits the word for sure here as you have observed, yes, but that is a typical punctuation of many a village ballad. You could see that drag in TMS' version as well when the hero and heroine are locked in an embrace with not so much of a distance separating them Smile "mAman" the pregnant pause after the word and its improvised repeat with an additional attribute "en" never failed to throw me back in time to the pAva mannippu days where "athAn" first, with its almost halting bashfulness is executed with gamaks of an introductory kind. And then with its prefix of an appendage "en" with the gamaks around "athhAn" signalling continuance of narration about a personality already introduced in a preceding line albeit subtly but with serious intent. He i.e. athhAn was going to be the central theme of the lyric you see Smile In the song featured here, "en" is the expression of the image of her man in her mind being stimulated, enlivened and taking over her senses totally. An intoxicating romance sweeping all over her it is, as in the listener's mind's eye, the heroine is experiencing oneness with him, with her eyes half-closed. The listener too is helplessly dragged into this romantic drama as the theatrics enacted by the tune, the change in rhythm patterns and the tonal byplay et all take over his faculties !!! In my perspective "Er pidikka kaigaL idai pidikka" is a romantic suggestion, an overture spun forth by the hero with the obvious intent in mind. "Aahha...idai pidikka" is the mock rebuff offered by the heroine, a weak defence mechanism, a feeble perfunctory formality put forward by her coyness. A shy woman's dichotomy in play is what it is all about with her inner self wanting intimacy as suggested by her man, whereas the surface teaser of a veneer acts out its "womanly etiquette preserving role". A masterly juxtaposing act as pulled off by a member of the fairer sex and a masterly portrayal of a "tight rope walk" of an act, musically !!!! MSV's body of work is verily a portrayal of various flavours of life in all its multi-hued, multi-layered glory !!!! Well..time to ground ourselves.... The tune itself...though it may possess seeming shifts in tonality in the charanams, it remains within the precints of the soul of Chenchurutti and it is the raag that hogs the limelight for the most part in Tamilnadu folk music. Many songs such as the song in discussion here, very popular they are, get swept under the carpet with a stifled yawn and all-knowing nonchalance. Thanks for dusting off the underexposed composing values of an overexposed song and thanks for highlighting them too. If "kattOdu kuzhal Ada Ada" had been yearning for a sibling, this song would have fulfilled its longing !!!!

Thanks Vaidy. Yes. This aspect of MSV that is impregnating the hidden feel exposed and felt through his music is very unique indeed.

In this aspect there is no coma after M S Viswanathan but only Full stop.
And we are in the same boat on this account of MSV.

Thanks Vatsan. In fact I remembered you when I wrote about 'Maman en maman' which is similar to 'athan en athan'. And it is a fact that you taught me how to see MSV by breaking the matter with the sandham.

But I doubt about your observation of the flavor of 'Chenchuruti' in which the Ga1 is the prominent note for that flavor. Is that right? But some how MSV never used it in the Pallavi and Anupallavi but deliberately kept it for Charanam and introduce that note in the interlude before the charanam as a facilitator for the singers. And seeing the pair in unison before the Charanam made me feel like that.

Dear Murali & Vatsan,

That MSV is the only musical genius in the world who even gave a meaning for "punctuations" in a song in itself is worth a deep research. Vatsan, I remember you telling me during the CTS days (sorry for reminding you the times of CTS, but have no choice!!!) that in the song Paalirukkum, Pazhamirukkum, it's punctuations all the way and how he had set a tune like this will remain a mystery forever. MSV who completely visualises every emotion in the song and derives the most suitable tune from the lyric itself is something totally unheard of in the annals of film music. While many of the composers of yesteryears or the ones who came later weren't Blessed with the creativity that MSV possesses. I also wish to recall Vatsan's words in one of his very early postings...that "MSV is like the Veena on the lap of Goddess Kalaivaani who chose MSV to channelise the music and reach it to people like all of us" still creates instant goose bumps everytime I think about it.

Be the punctuations or a defeaning silence or a pause or for that matter anything as small as a micro second, only MSV's music in the world conveys colossal meaning. What is even more baffling till today is how MSV is able to convey & intepret these emotions through instruments is something so unique and so perfect that he scores a perfect 10 on 10 everytime he does it.

No home work, no calculations, no preset notions on technicalities, no swanky locations for composing...just he & his melody generator (harmonium) and period....we become slaves for HIS music!!!! What a wonderful feeling to be an addict for HIS music!!!

CHEERS

MSV
IS MUSIC!!!

Vaithy, those CTS days and yes...close to your stall gorging those sizable burgers !!! Cannot believe that more than 10 years have passed by. Punctutations..yes we had great fun discovering and discussing all that and to top it all I can recall talking about the very same feature in athhAn ennathhAn to Adhavan (of the "enrum MSV" fame) and he cleverly palmed it off and repeated all that on Mega TV verbatim...in his amuthaganam Smile I remember mentioning "Adal, pAdal, kAthal, koNdAttam" in "kOttai mathil mElE".

NYM, Chenchurutti being a derivative of Harikambhoji does not have the small "Ga" whereas this song featured has it in the charanams. Despite such deviations from the norm in the charanams, the song leaves you with the Chenchurutti feel and therefore in spirit it is so Smile
