Raga Shivaranjani is one when applied , will instantly convey high level of emotions, a tinge of sadness and yearning for something..

S R2 G2( Sadharana Gandharam ) P D2 S are the swaras …This is one raga which also touches the peak on higher notes very swiftly at the Gandharam …I mean, one need not go to M or P to have a surcharged feel…this Raga is special in its own flavor !

There is also Misra Shivarajnani which has G3( Antara Gandharam ) in addition to the above notes . This further gives a special touch and a greater melody is being generated .

Since only a single note is added, it will be difficult to decipher the subtle difference between the above 2 unless someone hears the G3 distinctively .So, it is a challenge..

In Carnatic music – Kurai ondrum illai , the famous song penned by Rajaji and sung by MSS stands tall and the raga comes straight away for the first para ( its raga malika )… the mighty Sopana Vazvil maginzdhu ( Papanasam Sivan lyric ) I wish to classify under this genre purely for the devotional content delivered with bhakti .

To quote some famous songs on Shivaranjani - Tere mere Beech mein ( Ek duje ke liye ) , Jane Kahaan ( Mera Naam Joker ) , Mere Neina Saavan Baadon ( Mehbooba ) … One will appreciate, these are mega hit songs and also expressive …either it is for in search of a love or a heart breaking loss ..

In Tamil movies – there are many which have come after MSV’s foray …

I wish to cover how our Man has handled both the ragas in his own signature …

He can apply it for a teaser like ENNA VEGAM NILLU BAMA ( Kuzandhaiyum Deivamum ) !

Or for a comic situation wherein Nagesh interrupts with a high decibel BHOOMIYIL MAANIDA JENMAM EDUTHADHU ( Utharavindri Ulle vaa )..

Also for the tearful one which became a household when MGR was seriously ill and taking treatment at Brooklyn - AANDAVANE UN PAADHANGALAI NAAN …This is another typical MSVish …why I am saying this ? because it touches an occasional Nishadam N3 too which is unconventional and uncharacteristic of the Shivaranjani-Mishra Shivaranjani group !

So , we have already witnessed different situations and an unique variations displayed by the Master ..

The 80s were not a memorable phase for Nadigar Thilagam – MSV-TMS – PS- LRE –Kavignar fans…..while sadly Kavignar passed away during 81 the tamil cinema witnessed gradual end of the mighty ..

Can we put it as TRANSITION ? or END OF THE GREAT ERA ?

Later in the early 80s, when the era was coming to a gradual end, the same MSV used it for another situation…..

This time its between lovers for the movie Vasanthathil Oru Naal , Sivaji Ganesan-Sri Priya & others….its a remake of the Hindi Mausam

While the movie came and disappeared, the song VENDUM VENDUM was popular in the radio and a big solace for MSV fans..

Yes..this song has all the ingredients of Shivaranjani however with the Misra Shivaranjani effect at the starting note itself … He starts with G3-D2-P-G3 …

MSV always will maintain that he never thinks about a raga when he starts composing…but I can emphatically say here that he had consciously applied this raga to generate an emotional feel ..

And the raga notes are aesthetically applied to carve out a beauty

If the pallavi is a bit sober , akin to the raga’s behaviour , the charanam will cajole and take us to Heaven ….the MSV patented chromatic notes could be seen too as SPB hums at the end !

Surprising that there is no mention of this song and the raga in the vast web world !
