POLICE KARAN MAGAL –IV
Songs – MELODY, MELANCHOLY at will
My deliberate expression ‘at will’ is an intended encomium to the inimitable creators Kannadasan and Viswanathan. Despite the phenomenal impact cast on the then TF audience, the creators never made even a wink of a suggestion about their efforts in bringing out those numbers. Such was their ‘stand offish’ attitude to their pieces of work, leaving it entirely to listeners to have their views /reviews- a grand trait among genuine creators! My earlier suggestion that songs were utilized for specific advantages to the process of movie-making is the exact purpose that this piece and the subsequent ones attempt to throw open.

KD has brought to life his observations on life through certain couplets like
“azhagudan iLamai thodarndhu varAdhu, irukkindra pOdhE vaa vaa vaa”
“vAlibam enbadhu thOttam vaNNa malargaLin koottam” vAdiya pinnE malarAdhu” urging the partner of the urgency to ‘proceed’. Who else but KD could have brought out all such truth in utter simplicity while showcasing the playboy trends of the male artiste? The intended information of the character has been sufficiently shown by CV S by using different girls to pair with the boy for different ‘charaNam’ phases. All the efforts of Kannadasan and Sridhar have been brilliantly catapulted by MSV by using radically different styles of interlude orchestration before each ‘charaNam’ implying that the boy has latched on to a new girl this time . Truly a team work. This song’s intent is further reiterated in song 2.
2 nilavukku enmEl ennadi kOvam : here too the ulterior design of the boy is suggested in “thirumaNa nALil maNavarai meedhu iruppavan nAn thane” –a ploy to cheat this new girl [Pushpalatha this time]. May be MSV had something in his mind while setting the orchestral frames for this song. The interlude pieces are so very brisk, lively and bubbling with a riotous play of instruments – probably depicting the playboy’s hefty desire with every girl on whom he sets his eye. I am unable to interpret these interlude pieces by some other justification.
