PostPosted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:16 am    Post subject: SHENOY !!!! Reply with quote

Dear Sampath,TFMLOVER n all,
SHENOY !!! as everyone said , it is one of the many Hindustani classical instruments used EXTENSIVELY,I mean EXTENSIVELY by our Musical Saint. I would like to reiterate that He has used this amazing instrument to express different kinds of emotions which was (and is ) used mainly for expressing grief or melancholy. But our Master has used the same for Romance, Devotion,Classical, Meloncholy and what not !!!!

The following is a very very very few of His Immortal "Shenoy" songs :

1. Aalayamaniyin Osayai (Palum Pazhamum) - There is an intersting anecdote with this Shenoy Interlude. The Shenoy Legend , Late Ustad Bismillah Khan who has also played in MSV's orchestra was giving a performance in Chennai which our Master attended. He played this Interlude in the middle of the concert , just to honour Him !!!!!

2. All songs of Karnan in both prelude and interludes - especially in Ullathin Nalla Ullam ,Iravum Nilavum, Poi Vaa Magaley, Kangal Engey !!!
I would not do justice if I dont mention about the great Shenoy player Sathyam !!! Probably, many of us know this...But still....In "Karnan" composing or rerecording in which both the Shenoy legends Sathyam and the Ustad had played, our MSV told Sathyam that "NEE AVARODA NALLA VAASIKKARAPPA" - I feel these words are really TRUE and worth a Million !!! Would Sathyam have expected anything more in his life ?

If Sathyam is alive , I would have really VOTED him for GRAMMY or any other coveted medal for Instrumentalists !!!! Still, I VOTE him for Posthumous Grammy Award.

Dear dmohan
Please note that "POI VAA MAGALEY" is an AMAZING SONG sung by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi and not by MLV !! This song starts with the Shenoy piece and when you listen to it very carefully it conveys the situation and beautifully expresses the meaningful lyrics - "POI VAA MAGALEY" !!!

3. Oruvar vaazhum Aalyam - from Nenjil Or Aalayam - Shenoy is also used in the Title Music.

4. Yennai Yaar Endru Enni - Palum Pazhamum.

5. Pon Ondru Kandaen - from Padithal Mattum Podhuma - As Venu Jhee said this interlude is generally CUT in the Radio and Cassette versions. But this is really an amazing piece that is being missed and listening or enjoying this song without this Shenoy piece is vain...!!!

6. Malargalai Pol Thangai Urangugiral - This is also an amazing Interlude that would start with a Shenoy piece very slowly and would match up with the rythm.

7. Iru Malargal Climax Tune - This is one of the very fine examples of Romantic Meloncholy - This is how am able to categorise this. Please listen to this !!

8. Thanga Ratham Vanthadhu - Kalai Koyil - What a composition !!

9. Sumai Thaangi Saaindhal - Thanga Padhakkam - No words to express

10. Malai Pozhudin Mayakathiley - Are we eligible to discuss this song ?!!!
If you notice carefully, there will be a subtle difference in the Ending notes of the Shenoy Interlude in the second Charanam from the First charanam which probably is one of this Instrument's speciality and beauty that is being awfully explored and used !!!!
What an expertise in composing and rendition!!!

11. Nilanvey Ennidam Nerungadhey - Ofcourse, Venu Jhee has listed this as well, but I could not stop myself from listing this again hehehehe...

12. Many songs of Thrilling Thematic Tunes - Pure Instrumental Album by our Legend.

My Personal Experience - I started liking all these Hindustani Intrumentals only by listening to our Master's music. So, I went and bought some cassettes of PURE HINDUSTANI Classical Intrumentals by the Great Legends. But I could not enjoy and appreciate the music completely , probably it is because of the lack of my knowledge in Hindustani Music and did not understand the same. So , I decided to explore our Master's creations more ,when I found that there are LOTS ,LOTS and LOTS of Hindustani Classical Instrumental pieces in many of BGMs, Preludes and Interludes which I find soothing than the pure instrumentals. Most of them are equal to or BETTER than what I listened in the cassettes by the Great Legends. I mean , there are many pure Hindustani Classical Notes (with Melody) created by our Master which can only be created by the SPECIALISTS in those Intruments !!!! This is the Greatness of our Master !!! I just could not believe my ears when I experienced this for the first time !! Many may not agree with me ,but the above is my Humble opinion !!

Vaidhy uncle has categorised many of his SHENOY songs under "My Shenoy Man" .

Vaidhy Uncle , please list down the songs.

In "Poomazhai thoovi " there is a minimal usage of Shenoy. You need to listen very minutely to find the way Shenoy and Clarinet being played together in the end of the song. It is Clarinet that is being used extensively in that song. Really Amazing !!!

Dear Venky,

Highly informative list and what gesture of Ustad of Shenoi to the Ustad of Tamil film music!!!! Great indeed.

And Nilavae ennidum negrungadhae. what a song. Madurai G.S. Mani used to tell that in a span of 30 min our maestro came with some 150 tunes and this tune was selected. And another "Nilavae" i want to talk about.

"Nilavae Nee Shatchi" - What a song Venkyand what a violin bit. I am 43 years old now. But the movie came when i was boy. I do not know abc of any music then. But i swear, the moment i heard the song it filled up my heart with joy unspeakable (to quote the words of Swami Vivekananda - Chicago speech) and what a song. Whenever i heard the song my eyes turned moist.

I kindly request Mr.Vaidy and Ram to include this particular song "Nilavae Nee Shatchi" in the songs list. It is more than 25 years since i heard this song. Pls include.

thanks a lot once again.

Dear Venkat,

Excellent analysis on the “Shenoy” usage of the Legend. Let me give a pat on your back. Though the list may be endless, let me try to list out a few more songs, where the Master has excellently used Shenoy:

1. Therodum Namma (Baagap Pirivinai)
2. Pallaakku Vaangap Ponen (Panakkarak Kudumbam)
3. Saravanap Poygayil Neeradi (Idhu Sathiyam)
4. Pavalak Kodiyile (Panam Padaithavan)
5. Aha Mangala Melam Kotti Muzhanga (Kai Kodutha Deivam)
6. Kelvi Pirandhadhu Anru – an excellent Shenoy piece before the last stanza, starting with “Kulamagal Vaazhum Iniya Kudumbam Kovillukinaiyagum”, a sudden change of style in the song (Pachai Vilakku)
7. Vaaraadhiruppano (Pachai Vilakku)
8. Oru Naal Iravu Pagal Pol Nilavu (Kaaviyath Thalaivi)
9. Unnidathil Ennaik Koduthen (Avalukkenru Or Manam)
10. Naalai Indha Velai Paarthu (Uyarndha Manidhan)

(please excuse me if any of the above have already been listed in the forum)

Long Live MSV!!

With Luv,
Venu Soundar

Thanks a lot Venu Jhee..... Surprised

Gosh...How did I miss Unnidathil Ennai Kodupen....What an amazing usage of Shenoy in the Interlude of 3rd Charanam !!! It would start with the wedding scene of Bharathi and Gemini Ganesan wherein our Genius has used Shenoy and Thavil describing the scene..!!! and every line of the 3rd Charanam ends with a beautiful Shenoy piece "filling" while the the previous 2 charanams would be filled by Violin ensemble !!! WOW !! what an imagination !! I used to listen to this song only for the 3rd Charanam.....

APPADIYE MANASA USIRA..ELLATHAYUM URKKIDUVAR !!!

We have only read about Pied Piper in our school text books, but Our Master is the real Pied Piper and we are all mice going beyond His music ...right ?

Vaarathirupparo !!!!!
Intha padalai kettu urugathavar yaaro ?
Kaadhal Paadalgalukku Shenoy ubayogithavargal veru evarum echagathil ularo ??

What a Shenoy INTERLUDE !!! - Who else on earth can give us such a Musical wonder ????? The beauty in this interlude is that the notes of the Shenoy Interlude and the Charanam are almost the same.

Edha pathi ezhudarthu edha vidarthunnu theriyala !!!

The song, lyrics, Shenoy..Ellamey arumayilum arumai !!!

Pakkathil Pazhamirukka...a.a.a.aaa (and the Shenoy fills the rest)
Paalodu Thenirukka...aaa (again Shenoy filling)
Unnamal Thanimayiley eyeye...Utkaarndha Mannanavannn...
Utkaarndha Mannanavan...(shenoy completes....the rest)

Evlo thadava kettalum ovvoru thadavayum pudhusa rasikkakkoodiya pala paadalgalil idhuvum ondru !!!

Dear Mr. Ram,

During the late fifties and upto the mid sixties the signature instrument for the Viswanathan Ramamurthy team was the violin played solo unlike those used in the full orchestration.. If one were to listen attentively the sound of the almost-faded violin can be distinctly heard along with the song. Probably it was to keep the singer on track. The violin instrument played during interludes of the song stanzas was what made MSV-TKR stand out amongst their peers. TK Ramamurthy was a maestro of the violin which was why MSV took him as his partner. There are many hits (like 'Sonnathu neethaana' [ Nenjil Oor Aalayam] which I will list out later. Just by listening to the violin one can distinguish that it is MSV-TKR's tune.

Secondly, remember the hawaian guitar? It was MSV who used this instrument in Tamil songs. Prior to this, this particular instrument was the domain of Hindi music directors like the shenoy. I remember one Hazara sing having cut albums playing Hindi film tunes on this intrument. It was used extensively for 'Paarthal Pasitheerum' (Kodi asainthathum'), Padagotti etc. I don't remember any Music Directors, besides MSV-TKR utilising this instrument. Maybe Vedha? I stand corrected, however.

Can anyone enlighten us further on the above two instruments handled by our maestro MSV?

Regards,

R. Mahendra Raj

mr. raj..

apart from the two instruments you mentioned, msv sir mostly used 'piano' in his songs in 60s and 70s.

most of the people will mention only 'enna enna vaarthaigalo' (vennira aadai) for his piano work. (no doubt piano too will sing with suseela madam)

but regarding me another song go little up than 'enna enna varthaigalo' for piano work.

that is 'manidhan enbavan dheivamagaalam' from sumaithaangi. in that song, piano will sing along with p.b.srinovas in a very mild way, but will capture our hearts in a hard way.

msv rules.

Hi everybody,

There is a mistaken notion that it was Ilayarajah who introduced country folk songs with the appropriate musical instruments in the mid seventies when he made his debut in the Tamil film world. Just three years early on (1972 to be exact) it was MSV's all time country folk hit that made an impact on listeners who had been hitherto exposed to western or classical tunes. That song is 'Adi ennadi Raakamma' (Pattikaada Pattanama). The use of 'urumi meylam' in 'Ketukodi urumi meylam' was another feather to MSV's cap as this song essentially captured the nuances of both the folk and western influence balancingly.

Thereafter Ilayarajah took the cue and the rest is history. It is a pity that when accolades are showered on Ilayaraja for reviving the country folk songs no credit whatsoever was attributed to MSV for setting the trend.

MSV was very particular in ensuring that the lyrics were not flooded in the avalanche of musical instruments. There was proper harmony between the both. No wonder Kaviarasu Kannadhasan was his all time favourite composer. A snippet narrated by Kannadhasan whilst working for the film 'Kai Kodutha Deivam - all songs were written by Kannadhasan except for 'Sindhu nadhyin isai'. While composing MSV found the words 'sundara telunginil paatu isaithu....'out of sync and was affecting his mood. He went to Kannadhasan who was around the studio premises and requested him to change this particular line as it sounded as 'paati setthu' (grandmother died). When Kannadhasan pointed out to him in his usual imitable style that this song was penned by Subrahmanya Bharathiyar, ( dey, intha paatu naan ezhuthalada, athai ezhuthinathu Subrahmanya Bharathiyar daa) MSV started to look aloud for the latter in the studio grounds! He was so engrossed in his work that he did not realise that Bharathiyar was no more around.

So folks, don't you all agree with me that it was MSV who was the trend setter for Ilayarajah? Comments are welcome.

Regards,

R. Mahendra Raj

Another song where prelude music takes off with beautiful piano music is "Kaatru vandhal thalai sayum - Naanal" from Kaathiruntha kangal - a musical superhit film.

Yes, it is a fact that MSV has expolited the piano to the fullest in songs featuring musical scenes. The songs which I can think of at the moment are 'Paatondru keytaen' (Pasa Malar), 'Unnai ondru keytpaen' (Puthiya Paravai), 'Paadovor Paadinaal' (Kannan En Kadhalan), 'Andu vanthatathum athey nilaa'[ (Peria Idathu Penn), 'Avalukkenna' (Server Sundram), 'Enna enna vaarthaigalo' (Vennira Aadai), 'Kan pona pokkilae' (Panam Padaithavan) etc.

If I am not mistaken close shots of the heroes' hands playing the piano were actually MSV's fingers deftly playing the instrument with charm and confidence. For such scenes MSV wears western suits so as to portray the heroes. But in reality the harmonium is the source of his songs which keys are similar to the piano, and of course his casual attire.

When Kaviarasu Kannadhasan and MSV toured the USSR in the late sixties the latter was a blur especially on geography and history of the Republic. Kannadhasan nearly lost his patience in trying to explain everything to him. But when they visited the historical Albert Hall where musical instruments were on display, MSV, oblivious to the curious on-lookers, straightaway played several numbers, including Russian, on the piano. The crowd applauded and gave him a standing ovation.

Even Kannadhasan was surprised because he walked over to the piano as though it beckoned to him and that too in a foreign country and an iron curtained one at that. Kanndhasan had only this to say about the incident - MSV is illiterate on the happenings around but when it comes to music he is the authoratitive king of this world.

So, it is right that MSV had used the piano to the maximum in his songs.

With warm regards,

R. Mahendra Raj

Yes Dear Raj...That is very true....Infact, he is a King when it comes to usage of Piano !!

I had been listening to another amazing PIANO song almost throughout the day which is ONE OF ITs KIND in many aspects !!! I seriously wonder if there is any other similar song done by our Master, If yes , please let me know. This song is not for any Happy situation or a Club song.....It is indeed a PATHOS song......Usually, Shenoi and santoor are used for such songs...But this is PIANO based....with amazing Accordion and Shenai..ofcourse. Another speciality of this song ...TMS and PS being the lead singers , LREaswari sings only the LULLABY part in the preludes and interludes with the Piano support !!!!

YES, the song is none other than MAANIKKA THOTTIL INGIRUKKA ...from Panam Padaithavan......

Please let me know if you could come across a PIANO song for such a pathos situation....
