That V.Kumar remains an unsung hero of Tamil Music Industry even after all these years is quite disheartening. With the exception of SPB no other singers for whom he composed excellent tunes ever mention him in their interviews. As many would have been aware of his contribution, let me give some sample songs for his mesmerising variety and captivating melody.
1.Unnidam Mayangugiren(K.J.Jesudas,Film:Then Sindhuthe Vanam)
2.Kaathoduthan Naan Pesuven(L.R.Easwari,Film: Velli Vizha)
3.Padaithane Bramma Devan(SPB Film:Ellorum Nallavare)
4.Aandavanin Thottathile Azagu Sirikkuthu(P.Suseela,Film:Arangetram)
5.Sabthaswara Punnagaiyai(SPB,VaniJeyaram Film:Nadagame Ulagam)
6.Kannoru Pakkam(TMS,P.Suseela Film: Niraikudam)
7.Vaazhvil Sowbagyam(SPB,P.Suseela Film:Thoondil Meen)
8.Unnodu Ennennavo Ragasiyam(Jeyachandran,Swarna)(same film)
9.Aadi Adangum(Seerkali Govindarajan.Film:Neerkumizhi)
10.Aduthathu(TMS,P.Suseela Film:Bama Vijayam)
11.Unakkenna Kuraichal(Our Great MSV, Film:Vellivizha)
During his heydays K.Balachandar used his potential to the maximum. But when he fell on evil days, alas no one extended to him any help in the form of offering him films. I think the last film that he composed music was "Sankari" a Saritha starrer. Rajkumar Bharathi and P.Suseela sang one beautiful melody in that film.
The greatest recognition for him came from none other than our Great MSV who would say "Unnidam Mayangukiren Kumar", whenever the two met in the past. Within a short span of time, when jambavans like MSV and KVM were at peak, he carved a niche for himself. His compositions
appear to be simple, but they are soul-uplifting and tranqulising.
Let us remember him as an apt Sishya of MSV
ALWAYS THE LOVER OF MELODIOUS MUSIC |

Dear Juja,
A great thread to bring to light, one of the unsung heros (as you told) - V.Kumar.
K.Balachander is one man who knows how and what to get from each and everyone he directs. Be it composer, actors, comedians, dialogue writers. KB-VK is definitely a combo to be cherished. (KB-MSV is yet another big history and thats a different story)
Very true that V.Kumar has given some extra-ordinary melodies, when a doyen called "MSV" was ruling the entire Tamil Music world !!!
Thanks a lot Juja for opening this thread. _________________ Ramkumar |

By the way, another great composer - Sudharsanam has given some beautiful melodies during his days. I had some analysis on his compositions. I think I need to dig it again. All these legendary yester-years should definitely find their mention in our website. I feel its our duty, for, our Master MSV would be pleased to know we discuss about them!
Anyways, let us talk about V.Kumar here...
(And more importantly...) Lets continue our MSV Journey _________________ Ramkumar |

Thank you Mr.Ram for your remarks. By the way I also know some songs of R.Sudarsanam/ He composed music for well-known movies like Parasakthi,Naanum Oru Penn,Poombuhar etc.Tamil Cinema has been never in need of good composers. I am happy to know so many of us have similar feelings when appreciating good music. Thank you. |

The Song "devan vedamum kannan geethaiyum oru paathaiyil ingu sangamam" from rajanagam was by V.Kumar. It is one of my personal favorites.. _________________ Thanks,

Dear Mr.Murali,
The MD for the film Sabadham was GK Venkatesh. I also made a similar mistake but was corrected.

I think the song En kadhal kanmani is from the film Manjal Kungumam. It was a great hit those days.

I think the song "unnai paarkavaendum , rasika vendum" is from Annapoorni, a Muthuraman and KRV movie.
In the same movie another KJJ number is there.

DEAR vk,
In your response above, you have observed 'MSV was a poor man's MD'. Certainly MSV has given his very best to every budget and his sole consideration has been quality independent of payments. I have heard that he has not been paid [so far] for a couple of movies for his entire work including the re-recording. WhenMSV learnt that the producer was in financial crunch, he volunteered his services as MD to complete the rerecording to help the releae of the movie. This magnanimity of MSV has not been reciprocated nor even appreciated by such beneficiaries. Let us clearly understand that MSV has not suffered from these idiosyncrasies of people who thought they were very smart; but they had to pay through their family's nose for lesser products later.
What I read in all these is, Humility can never be defeated as it always enjoys Divine Protection.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

dear mahesh
i stand corrected . yes its annapoorani - and i think its kumar only .
dear Prof
think i was not clearer in what i have said - my apologies hope my post is not misunderstood .. and pls allow me clarify
what i meant as poorman's MSV -not financially . but because MSV was busy with big heros/directors movies and big banners , and for a lesser known producers its easier to have shankar ganesh / v kumar / govardhan .
i am also aware . the payments used to get delayed .and not paid also , but still MSV used to compose songs fr the films . he is worriedonly about his musicians salary & bata .i used to hear a lot about that industry , as a producer was our tenant , and he produced atleast 7 movies in a row , with MSV .from devi dharisanam to super boy .infact MSV used to be his asthana MD .
And also i audited , film accounts OF subbu productions , who produced VARUVAan VADIVELAN , INDRU POL ENDRUM VAZHGA , SAVITHRI
so i came across the inside stories , of film world .
My admiration on MSV , grew many folds after i heard ,seen , , many a times of his involvement , magnanimity , and his down to earth personality . _________________ vijayakrishnan |

dEAR mR, VK,
Please read my post again. I have only strengthened the idea that MSV was not money-minded. I do not think any fan of MSV would say anything black or bad of him. Infact people adore MSV more because in an industry of no values MSV standa exceptionally tall. Please note that for the sake of continuity i reused your words; no way we can think on those inferior lines. Sorry if I have not made it clear.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman
