Whenever the Master himself takes up the mike, it turned out to be special ,unique & evergreen ..
Though the noof songs wouldn’t cross 100, each one is praiseworthy
One of the very best of the Champion composer is SOLLATHAAN NINAIKKIREN …ULLATHAAL THUDIKKIREN…
S.V.Subbaiah’s family of 3 daughters that include Srividya and Jayachitra are young and enterprising characters . Once Shivakumar steps in as a tenant, all interesting things happen with the 3 sisters falling in love for SK . While SK moves in a dignified manner with them, whom he marries finally is all the story is about. The movie also features Ulaga nayagan Kamal Hassan who was slowly coming up . Shivakumar is the hero .......
KB always ensured that the crux of the story & any turning point of the movie is brought to book through a song & this song is no exception….
Each one of the sisters dream as if they are alongside SK …It’s a background song well picturised also in slow motion in parts….
The highlight of the song is the mesmerizing voice of MSV though S.Janaki is given 2 charanams !
Another significant feature of the song is the wonderful usage of rhythm Guitar which supports like a gentle breeze …… Well well….long before, in the early 70s itself, the Master has already pioneered the art of applying Guitar , be it a lead or rhythm…..
The song also has a lovely & very sharp interlude arrangement , each different and refreshing …. The prelude however is very short but sweet Violin which is directly linked to the pallavi….
A superb 1st interlude before the first charanam with a combination of Piano / Violin to begin with & the flute takes over in a nice manner which takes to the charanam…..
The sweet voice of S.Janaki comes to the front now & our hearts get filled with joy …SJ’s voice is always refreshing as ever
That tabla usage has to be mentioned here ….top class ……
Here comes a scintillating 2nd interlude with solo Violin playing its part with a gentle support by Guitar …….This sort of solo Violin interlude is something the Master has applied sporadically for songs like Kann pona pokkile , Vaan nila nila alla ....& everytime this unique lude arrangement gives a special feeling....... Now the Master resumes with…..
The melody king rushes through for the 3rd interlude with a sweet flow of Guitar & flute .. and this time its SJ again………
And what a finish !!! MSV uses whistling to sign off with a flourish !!
Even Bangoos plays its part well throughout the song….
Every charanam ending with that Aahaa is unique and gives special touch to the great song….
This song is part of the glorious early 70s when the Champion Composer was at his awesome best , unleashing a series of splendid hits…….
MSV-KB had given some immemorial hits right from the late 60s and this movie is another feather to his cap……
S.Janaki is another gift to South Indian cinema …… This song could be the only one she sang with the Master ? …..Right from the 1960s to the 70s, MSV has given some superb songs to SJ and this one reminds in my memory as something special & so sweetly tuned….
Listening to songs like this makes me wonder why MSV didnt take up singing seriously ! Even in the 90s his voice was considered special that ARR requested him to sing Aaalakanda !
Just today evening, I had a chat with my elder brother ( who is a diehard IR fan & a Guitarist ) ….and he instantly recollected that final mind blowing whistling at the end of the song …….. What a splendid finish to a top class melodious composition of the great early 70s !! |

Hi Balaji
Excellent selection. Hope you noticed that MSV used violin piece of this tune in title and re-recording . Quiet mesmersing and makes to visualise the scene. Thanks.

Superb Balaji Sir!!!
Songs sung by our EMPEROR are not much, but each one is SPECIAL!!! I love the violin ensemble in the prelude, and the start of our EMPEROR at "Sollathaan Ninaikiren"....
Another noteworthy song from the movie is the SPB - LRE "foot tappin" duet "Kalyaanam Kacheri".. _________________ Thanks and Regards,

|

MSV's "Sollathan Ninaikiren" has that rare dream-like quality one could witness in the poems of British Poet Walter De La Mare's poetry. This song would captivate anyone's heart even after one listening. By the way there is another song which comes so closer to this in terms of melody and mesmerising ability sung by the same duo MSV and S.Janaki is from the film "Mani Osai" and the song is "Varusham Parthu Thethi Parthu Vayasu Vantha Pennai Parthu". Unlike Sollathan song, here MSV would only hum in between stanzas. But even this humming would be enough to take us to the dizzy heights.Thank you for your analysis, which every ardent MSV fans would like to do but somehow fail to do . Let all of us prostrate at the feet of this great genius MSV. I am really proud to be living at the same period as that of MSV's. May God Shower him with choicest blessings and Long life |

As ever, another splendid analysis by our Balaji !!!
What a great song and see how it suits the movie and the situation! Your writing conveys that aptly.
As a fan of your writing - "பின்னிட்டீங்க தல!!!" _________________ Ramkumar |

As usual a very good analysis dear Balaji...
This is one of the greatest song sung by MSV.
A great prelude...
In the same movie, at the end, MSV avargale oru bit song paadiyiruppaar.
"Solla ninaithathu sollaamal ponathu..."...
Yeno intha paadal TV matrum Radio-la olibarappa pattathillai...
Movie partha pothu mattum dhan ketruken... _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...
