In the Increasing order of its Complexity (or) Beautification !!!

"Sunday Picture... Monday Beach...Tuesday Circus...

மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் ரசிகர் ஒருவர் (ஸ்ரீராம் L) கூறியது: "Sivaranjani will not be able to identify itself in the Dexterous Hands of MSV!"

Dear Ram
An absolutely authentic and articulate survey of SIVARANJANI from Mellisai Mannar. Though I have no basic training in Carnatic music, your references to specific numbers in evidence of your observations on the 'handling' of this Raagam by MM reveal the magnitude of this colossus. Such postings do help novice[s] like me to gather at least some peripheral ideas on these compositions of Mellisai msannar. Please continue on these lines so as to enable enthusiasts to understand things better.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Dear Ram,

Excellent analysis of 'Sivaranjani' handled in variety by Mellisai Mannar !

That too, your unique way of presentation, in the order of complexity, from a sampradaaya prayogam to situations which are believed to be not fit for this raaga. One and only person who can handle raagas like this is our MM.

As you have said, his tunes are for the Bhavam and the situation and he has never done a predetermined application of a raagam at all !

As Prof said your simple way of writing, presented the most appropriate way will be a knowledge-bank for budding music students.

Oh.. youngsters of the present day ! Can you hear my voice ? Wherever you are, pl come to our site MSVTIMES.COM and feel how our Mellisai Mannar has created musical wonders in the last 5 decades !
( Ram, hearing my this top-of-my-voice cry, you will immediately recall
Venky's similar act in a netcafe when he was listening to MSV's
'Nitham Nitham ' song !!) Venkat ! Are you listening ?

Ramki

Hi Ram,
Great piece of work !!!!
The fact that AR Rahman decided to re-tune 'uthharavindri uLLE vA' pallavi indicates his awareness of the original and the raaga it is set to. Proves that 'kaNNum kaNNum' has its origin in the maveric compositions of our beloved MSV.
Another piece of info...probably Sabesan can testify to this. We all know that the classy 'enna thAn ragasiyamO ithayathhilE' by KVM and MSVs 'avan pOrukku pOnAn' were released in the same year. The part 'nAn pAdiya pAdalai mannavan kEttAn padayudanE vanthAn' and the charanams of the KVM song are in the same scale. Pugazhenthi readily accepted that KVM got his inspiration from the MSV number. Madhukons is the scale used.
We should start a thread on the characteristics of MSV's tunes. When you listen to 'Ayiram peNmai malarattumE' , at the point 'sol sol sol' you know the tune is for a dance. MSV did not compose 'yet another ' tune for the situation as the present day insipid pretenders would have. I could write a 1000 page treatise on how he composes for commas in a lyric. The latest to my addition...'kOttai mathil mElE' from thirudan. Listen to the phrasing 'Adal, pAdal, kAthal, koNdAttam'.........
The composer who talks through a seemingly simplistic mind-set (especially when says 'nAn composing seivatharkku mun en gurunAthargaLai ninaithhu koLvEn'), starts composing where the musical grammar used by his gurunAthars ends. His composing style starts 'outside of the box' , flaps its wings soars into the skies, sometimes flapping more vigorously, sometimes stopping the flapping and taking joy in the flight, sometimes swooping down swiftly, somtimes pretending to swoop and setting off on another flight, all for fun. Great man!!!

Dear Ram,

Excellent analysis. I was wonderstruck for a few hours at least as it ran contrary to my convictions about this Raga. I have all along been observing/thinking Sivaranjani is only for pathos, Bhakthi and haunting ,ghostly melodies. Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam examples abound . We can keep on recounting examples to subtantiate this.

Ilayaraja has (mis)handled this raga extensively only to infuse more pathos even in Romancing Songs. This is my personal belief. No prejudice intended

That MMM has handled this Raga so adeptly and intuitively for a song like Poova Thalaiya etc and made us all dance and clap to his tune without we ever realising this, talks a ton about his native inborn genius.

A separate thesis on how MMM handled these ragas will immensely benefit even Carnatic Musicians if only they analyse it obejectively without prejudice.

Dear Mr Vatsan
I am amazed at your phraseology of calling the novice MDs "insipid pretenders" - perhaps the most powerful expression of genuine concern. At another place you have lived through MSV's composition while narrating how a song takes off and seemingly descends for another lofty flight -Oh what a way to write! I feel like saying, on occasions the tempo of the song lays suspended like a Dotterel to survey the universe for an ideal landing site. But, MSV the bird being a divine entity hops effortlessly in magnificent sweeps swiftly landing in an unexpected zone in awesome simplicity punctuated by brilliance to say the least. The more we try analyzing this composer, the more we realize our limitation and have to submit ourselves to eternal humility. My sincere appreciation to your style of writing that would soon turn infectious.
May God bless you, to write more.
Warm regards Prof. K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Thanks dear Professor for the laudatory words.
en ezhuthhu avar thantha pAdal allavA............
Your simile of waiting for a landing spot.....great indeed...could we call that melody negotiation...of delivering the punch line/phrase to end / accentuate the melody!!! Be it a simple but classy and unexpected 'anthi manjaL niramO', 'pOthum ena koorum varai poovE viLaiyAdu' (oru nALilE uravAnathE) or the tender but yet innovative 'iLam kAthalanai kaNdu nANi nindrAL' (thannilavu), MSV is truly a master melody negotiator. Aesthetics sponsored, doctored and monitored amongst several other things!!!! What to say of his ability to shoot the charanam off as if he is starting the narration of a new story and seamlessly underlining its connection to the pallavi that imagined itself to be alienated when the charanam started off Smile Listen to kaNNan enthan kAthalan and the charanam.......engEyO pArthha mugam and its charanam...... pallavi is almost left orphaned when the charanam starts its narration of a new story only to find itself aesthetically reverting to the pallavi, you almost see MSV winking at us...'see how I did it' type of a wink. To me, 'engeyo paartha mugam' is the epitome of words being impregnated with melody or the intrinsic melody present within the words expressed most beautifully. The pallavi is all fun and frolic but the charanam is all about the hero sitting back and enjoying his girl's beauty. 'ezhunthE nadanthAL' starts of dreamily as it should but the listener is left wondering...how is the pallavi link-up going to be brought about......you wont have to wait for long.....listen and appreciate it Smile Like MSV's charanams I like to keep people on their tenterhooks Smile

Hey Raaam !!

Bravo… what an amazing post on Sivaranjani exploits by the Master !

Its really an enlightening session

Look , though all the songs listed by you are very good, my spontaneous pick will be AANDAVANE UN PAADHANGALAI . You know why ?

I am a witness to this song becoming a household number when THE GREATEST LEADER OF MASSES , Makkal Thilagam MGR was battling for his life in Apollo Hospital / Brooklyn Hospital. The whole TN was praying for his recovery & this song was the driving force . You know, it even converted many atheists to theists . Such was the sheer magical power of the tune & orchestration . Ullamadhil ullavarai …allitharum nallavarai..vinnulagam vaa endraal…mannulagam ennaagum ?? This question was posed by crores across Tamil nadu then !

My next pick will be Saravana poigayil !

Ram,
One more fun and frolic duet awarded to Sivaranjani by you-know-who. athO vAraNdI vArANdi villEnthi oruthhan by SPB and VJ. The charanam ofcourse it is different.

uthharavindri uLLE vA ofcourse has different tunes for each of the stanzas. One of them close to being Hemavathi !!!!

Another Hemavathi.....'kai viralil piranthathu nAtham'...but stop there is yet another ..phataphat.....yes it is adi ennadi ulagam athil ethhanai kalagam....pure Hemavathi, wonder what was going through MSV's mind then. Outrageous !!! Would challenge any classical musician to even come to close to those wonders.

Well then, what about using Chakravakam for a MGR duet ? Charanams of pEsuvathu kiLiyA.......how it seamlessly links to the pallavi.

Dear Ram,

"Enna Vegam Sollu Bama". Thank u very much Ram. To be honest, I came to realise that it is based on Sivaranjani scale only after you have told us. Ram, wonderful piece of Information. Here Sivaranjani scale takes a quiet new and unique dimension in the hands of our beloved Master. Ram Kanna, pinnittada Raja. This piece of information should be an eye opener for the future of generation of Music Directors. What an absolutely different way of handling of sivaranjani scale.

As far as the songs of "Saravana Poigaiyil and Neerodum Vaigaiyilae" , I am tempted to think in a different way. In fact it is only my perception. If my perception is right, it is Sheer Genius.

It is very unusal to sing common ragas like Sankarabharanam and Pantuvarali in "Madhima Sruthi". I have heard, in my experience , only Balamurali Sir singing Pantuvarali and Sankarabharanam in Madhima Sruthi. It is quiet a Novel idea. Mind you, it is not Shifting Scale. In shifting of scale the athra sruthi is not backing the melody though technically they seem to be one and the same. The result it gives a different flavour altogether. If I listen to these above song, I feel these are songs are composed in Karaharapriya giving a flavour Hindustani Kapi or Pilu in a different shades. These are based in F#. (Madhimam of C#) Now hold the C# and F# together to get the Madhima Sruthi and try to play the song, I feel u could appreciate what I am telling. If this be the case, Ram , I am really moved to tears in writing this . I feel that Godess Saraswathi is just appearing before his son MSV every now and then and inspires to give very intellectual approach to music. Great indeed. No music director on the earth can think of this kind of novelty.
Try singing our Suddha saveri (Durga) in
madhayama Sruthi , it gives shades of Pahadi and it is not yet pahadi. Even Hindustani, Durga is sung only with Panchama sruthi.

Vatsan and Ram, in Neerodum Vaigayilae, When TMS sings, "Nan Kadhalannum Kavidhai sonnaen kattilini Maelae" and the end of Maelae, listen to the overlap which counter the original tune. What a conception!!!

Thank you once again on enlighting me on "Enna Vegam Sollu Bhama"

Dear Vatsan,

Adi Ennadi ulagam seems to be predominantly based on the scale of Sumaesa Ranjani. But to me even this is not correct as the Chatustruthi Deivam is more consistent. The arahanam and avarohanam should be Sa Ga1 Ma2 Pa Dha2 Ni1 Sa and Sa Ni1 Dha2 Pa Ma2 Ga1 Sa. This is not usual way of mere deviation from the scale Sumanesa ranjani to add the prefix "Misra" . The scale seems to be independent by itself from the 58th Melakartha Hemavathi. Kindly look into some text and let us know the name of the scale, if possible.

MSV musickil WONDER kku panchamaeyillai.

With love
