Brass Section at its best!!! Another unimaginable combination, using Thavil in par with Western percussions, EMPEROR did these wonders in sixties and seventies, well before the "computerised era" began. The prelude itself would bring one to the dance floor, and when the song picks up, we would find no other option than to dance together with the music. With club songs, LRE rules the court, her sizzling voice would hook anyone into a trap of seduction. Also, none other than LRE could bring the swank, in such songs, which has to be the quality of a club dancer.

"Gouravam" - only one word would be synonymous with this title - Barrister Rajinikanth. One of the most powerful characters so far, the role was etched in perfection with the excellent story, screenplay, and sharp dialogues. But, the "famous factor" was someone called "Nadigar Thilagam". None else, can show the pride and honour of the character, like he has portrayed in the movie. NT did a dual role in the movie, a kind-hearted, honest step-son, who would stand against his father and teacher, in the struggle for justice. Who, other than NT, can portray these extremely opposite qualities, with perfect difference?? The most remembered moment of the movie would be the "Neeyum Naanuma" song, the actor, poet and composer, competing to mark themselves for the song. All succeeded, EMPEROR's composition, KAVIGNAR's lyrics and NT's acting still remains a lesson to freshers. All the songs remain fresh in mind, the soft romantic "Yamuna Nathi Inge", the comforting piano number "Mezhuguvarthi Erikinrathu", and the emotional "Paalooti Valatha Kili".

The situation for this song is the celebration of victory for Major Sundarrajan, who escapes the death sentence by the brilliance of Rajinikanth's arguement.

The euphoric drums and trumpets open the song, followed by a slight bongos and the party cry "Yaaah". Trumpets raising up high, brings the excited party mood, followed by the trombones, both alternating, with a thin string of guitar following, in the backgorund of drums and thavil. The trumpets raise again, the flutes supporting at every step. Accordion follows, lowering and bringing us to the track, joining to the pallavi. LRE opens up,

அதிசய உலகம்
ரகசிய இதயம்
அழகிய உருவம்
இளகிய பருவம்

Thavil supports LRE in the pallavi here, absolutely marvellous in matching with the dancing mood. The first two lines ends with flute, and the last two by trumpets, backed up by thavil. Next comes, the "excellent" part of the song, none could hide the joy building up, when Thavil picks its pace and makes us dance at

பெண்ணுலகில் நான் உன்னை அழைப்பேன்
பொன்னுலகம் உன் கண்ணில் தருவேன்

The interlude begins with guitar finished by trumpets, in the drums and thavil background, followed by the hopping flute supported by thavil, and finished by trombones. LRE starts the charanam,

(Wonderful tease expressed in the question!!!) தரிகிடதோம்...

The entire charanam goes with bongos with frequent beats of Thavil in the background, supporting LRE. And when, LRE comes back at "பெண்ணுலகில் நான் உன்னை அழைப்பேன்", the Thavil picks up again, making us crazy.

Bass Clarinet opens the second interlude backed by bongos, and guitar moving along, maintaining the bibulous evening at the party. Trumpets drag us back to the dance floor, accompanied by guitar finishing every boast of trumpets, guitar hopping at the end with bongos and take us to the charanam. LRE opens,

Back to the ecstatic "பெண்ணுலகில் நான் உன்னை அழைப்பேன்" with Thavil.

The song ends with the trumpets, similar to that during the beginning of the song. Just thinking about the ultimate beats of Thavil in this Western song, would make our heads nod. Our EMPEROR rules the music!!!!

Dear Sriram Kannan

Dear Sriram Kannan,

As you had rightly started, it's just the Brass section at an all time best by the EMPERROR. This is one song which Venkat & I will always play whenever we meet (that's almost daily ofcourse Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy ) and what rendering by LRE (not to mention the fabulous acting of the acting Legend Shivaji). Truly a song that deserves to be etched in Platinum in the records of MSV!!! I liked everything about the song especially the melodious rendering by LRE who's normally considered to be having a husky voice and I am sure no one has ever unearthed the rare talent of this singer like MSV and we have already seen the amount of classy songs rendered by LRE in another thread. The EMPERROR will ever stay an EMPERROR when it comes to appropriate instruments usage at the most inappropriate places taking everyone by an absolute blinder!!!!!!!!!!! Another important aspect of this song is the classy usage of the Thavil in a club song like this some 3 decades ago is ample proof for our EMPERROR'S unlimited imagination. MSV is the creator par excellence and it's just impossible to find words to pay tributes to his work. What a song Athysaya Ulagam and as usual what a write-up Sriram!! Athisaya Sriram!!!!

CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC

Dear Sriram Kannan...

You have picked a very special song and analysed it in a fantastic way. This song is one of my 'Top-10 LRE Numbers'. (First place in the list, no doubt, it is 'pattathu raani').

Saradha mam, once again I gone to the link you give, and read your short analysis about this song. Both of you clearly mentioned about the use of 'Thavil' in this song (which one, none other than MSV can do).

But the sad thing is, this wonderful song was overshadowed in broadcasting by other three songs, 'yamuna nadhi inge', 'paalootti valartha kili' and 'neeyum naanumaa'.

Sriram Kannan :

Right pick. This is one of wonders of MSV. The audacity (born out of authenticity) to mix Thavil with trumphet is an ultimate testimony to the Master's composing abilities.

Thanks for reminding this song.

(I know this is a late reply to the post)

Best Regards
Jeyaram G
