[b][color=blue][[b]In the year 1969 one of the finest tamil movie ever to hit silver screen, SHANTHI NILAYAM was released . This movie was known for its opulence in all departments of movie making. Fabulous photography , rich color , excellent artists(gemini, kanchana, nagesh, balaji) The movie was made in a hill station apparently ooty. But forever this movie will be remembered for its musical extravagenza, brought into being by the inimitable acharya M.S.V.
From his harmonium came a torrential flow of musical notes as water from niagara falls.

The quality of this movie was augmented several folds because of the singular contribution of the mighty acharya M.S.V. The opening song "iraivan varuvan" in the voice of P.Susheela manifested the brilliance of acharaya M.S.V's imagination..This song sounds so melodious, mellifluous not just for nothing.

The usage of time tested ragas involved in this.
a judicious mixture and usage at appropriate places of ragas mohanam , kalyani , shankarabaranam and his favourite harikambhoji..This mixture has taken us to dizzy heights of musical experience.

The second song in the voice of P.Susheela again "selvangale deivangal vazhum ullangale..." is a product of ragas shankarabaranam, hamsadhwani and again harikambhji..The prelude and interlude is a treat for even an average listener .

The striking combination of ragas with only shuddha swaras and harikamboji with komal nishad (ni) can be the handy work of a born genious who has got the innate ability to blend ragas of different moods and swara arrangment . Only a master craftsman can engage in the luxury of making songs with the admixture of such differing ragas.Let lesser mortals (music directors) keep themselves away from such indulgence . Otherwise their despicable lowly knowledge in music will be brought to the surface .

Next song "kadavul oru naal ullagai kanna ..." is an example that vouches that the copywright of raga nattabhairavi is safely in the hands of acharya M.S.V. Raag nattabhairavi in all its color and splendour flows like a divine river to enthrall the humanity with melody in its full form . I will be delighted if anyone of our readers could convince me that any other composition by any other music director could atleast measure upto one by hundredth of this rendition , from acharya M.S.V's harmonium.

Then comes the master piece "iyarkay ennum illaya kanni ...." which opened the flood gate of oppurtunities for S.P.Balasubramnium.
Achraya M.S.V deployed ragas hindolam , shuddha dhanyasi and natta bhairavi to create this song . Combining hindolam and shuddha dhanyasi is a mind boggling accomplishment beacause if this , this song has attained immortality and gave a vertical take off for S.P.B. Just for this fact alone S.P.B. can remain eternally greatfull to acharya M.S.V.

Any aspirant music director should listen to this song hundered times over and he will reap rich dividends.

Never before raga shankarabaranam was ever used in the making of a song sounding more mordern , more westernized , bringing about mood of joy and happiness than when "boomiyil irruapdhum vanathil parapadhum...." sung by T.M.Soundharajan.
Once again the prelude , interlude , bgm , will convince even a lay listener that this song must have been born out of the imagination and creative thinking of a person who is a permanent resident of gandharwa lokha.[color=blue]

Dear Ravi

Great writing on the wonderful numbers of ShanthiNilayam.
As you rightly said, the MD(?)]s of present age should listen
to the songs of our GURU to understand his tremendous ability
to blend not-looking-alike ragaas to convey the 'bhavam'.

Pl continue your writing to entuse us

Hi,
'iyarkkai ennum' for the most part is set to Gopika Vasantham which Hindolam with a 'Pa' pretty much like 'unnidathhil ennai kodutthEn'. As an aside, it is a well known fact that Mukari is played in Tamil marriages and Hindolam (as several adverts would vouch) in North Indian marriages. When Bharathi dreams of getting married to Gemini Ganesan (in the III interlude), a classy , feeling filled Shehnai piece is played in Hindolam which could have made the mike it was played into blush in shyness at the thought of getting married Smile. MSV chose to perceive this as a North Indian marriage:) About how it seamlessly blended with the song....well.....here we go again......

Wonderful analysis of Shanti Nilayam ! one of the very best albums of MSV.All songs are real gems and superhits . Still being heard with the same level of enthu.

Dear Mr. Ravilsr, its interesting to note that so many ragas have been applied for these songs ! This is what defines MSV . He always maintained a steady balance between classical & western ( never deviated from the essence of the raga ) . Its all coming out of his magical Harmonium , melody, music meter incessantly & some extraordinary music is the final output !
Pls keep pouring your thoughts on the classical side of MSV music
