|
|
Dear friends,
With our friends turning in with a greater regularity and posting new observations, it appears logical to have this thread where one can list songs that have been dropped from picturisation. Despite their not 'figuring' on screen, some of them have been very good compositions to have registered themselves with the listeners. Mere audio has taken a grip of the listeners. Just to start the thread I begin with the items dropped by Sreedhar who was pioneer in various domains of movie-making including dropping of songs.
KALYAANA PARISU -- Tea, Tea, Tea, Singer -SC Krishnan
VENNIRA AADAI --- Neeraadum kaNgaL ingae-- P.Susheela
[Also Nenjaththilae nee naetru vandhaai was
dropped from this movie and was accommodated in Shaanthi]
OOTY VARAI URAVU --- Yarodum Paesakkooodadhu - PBS , LRE
Except the comic number from Kalyaana parisu , the other songs listed among the dropped numbers have turnedout to be audio hits.
Some times technology can also deprive us of certain other benefits. It could be understood if we consider the following information. The dropped song situations were more common in the 'pre-casette period' of Tamil screen. In those days songs were made as Gramaphone records
[ graphite discs as big as domestic ' dosai casting iron tawas each weighing about 300 gms, and songs were recorded on bothsides of the graphite discs; Cameras, Lawyers and gramaphone records uniformly enjoyed the identity of black exterior or appearance].
Song recording agencies were quite intelligent as to combine a verygood number with a 'not-so-good' item so that even the latter version was also sold when someone bought a good song. Records would reach the stands months before the movie appeared for viewing. It used to create a huge sense of craving in the minds of audience, imagining of the picturisation to be. This is how even the dropped out numbers reached the consumer. Yet, the consumers never dropped a song unless it was an unimpressive composition. Every song carried the name of movie, movie house, Lyricist, singer[s] MD[s] etc and there was no scope for wrongly ascribing it to someone parallely depriving the contributors of their names.
Now technology can render the discs in no time and therefore movie houses can wait for the final list before marketing.
So friends, you can add to the list of such numbers and also analyse them for their features.

dear Prof uncle,
This is indeed a nice and a thought provoking thread. The song that comes to my mind immediately is "MAHARAJAN ULAGAI" from the all time fav of everyone KARNAN !!!
Atleast , this song is available in the cassette and the CD versions. Not sure about the songs that you have listed out here.
May I request whoever is posting is this thread, to share these "dropped out" songs for the benefit of the rasikas.....

Dear Professor,
Your genius proves. You have rightfully taken us to the unexplored horizon of MSV. Another extremely popular one and dropped out is "Thendral varum" from the film Paalum Pazhamum. And there are a few numbers in Ilaiya Thalaimurai. And many of the present generation would not even heard of the song "Ullam Po Endradhu" sung by L.R. Easwari and S.P. Balasubramaniam for the film Gnana Oli. This tune would some what be similar to Thillu Mullu title song thillu mullu. This song was picturised with (Jeya) Kowsalya and Paapji (starred as Sarada's daughter and Major's son respectively. They would be riding in bicycle and MSV would have used cycle bell ... as a rhythm for the song. This song was featured in the film for a very very short period ... say for first two or three days and removed to reduce the duration. But this song was played in the vivid bharathi until a few weeks before the release of the film.

There is a lullaby set to Neelambari in Karnan sung by PBS and PS which was dropped out of Karnan. I had the pleasure of PBS singing this for me in Woodlands Drive in !!!!
veeNai sirippu is an awesome song in noolvEli that was lef out as well.
yArOdum pEsakoodAthu is a killer of a song that was dropped out of OVU on Sivaji Ganesan's insistence, he could not tolerate the second hero Muthuraman getting 2 love duets in the same movie, the other being raja raja srirajan..... |

Dear MR. Vatsan ,
The PBS item from Karnan set to Neelambari scale [dropped out from movie ] was
SANGINAAL PAAL KODUTHTHAL
SANDHANA VAAI NOGUM ENRU
THANGATHTHAAL SANGU SEIDHAEN - thaalae lo ooo
CHINNA KARNAA...
so goes the lullaby. This type of public memory for a number [song] categorically asserts that it is music that possesses the mind and not simply any picturisation. On the contrary some excellent numbers have been ruined on the screen by poor picturisation or immature sequencing. Only some Directors have pitted the songs to the most telling effect.
Thank you for the nice opportunity.

A small rejoinder becomes necessary here. Mellisai Mannar and Nadigar Thilagam are pioneers in the Tamil film scene. The song Yaarodum pesakkoodaadu is one of the outstanding compositions of Mellisai Mannar and is a delight to listen even after 40 years. The understanding between Sridhar, Mellisai Mannar and Nadigar Thilagam was exemplary and none of them would disrespect other's contribution. The song was felt by the crew to reduce the fast pace of the film and because of the availability of raw film duration of the movie and other technical reasons, this was half heartedly not used. Nadigar Thilagam, as known generally, would not interfere in a Director's assignments and he thought the Director is the captain. To prove this one may go and see in the NT's thread in the hub. Please do not throw such kind of remarks just like that. It's my humble request. Even when Sridhar and NT departed, it was due to reasons beyond their work of art. Their work and commitment was not the reason but some other factors. Both of them had good relationship even though they did not work together. This fact has been said more than once in many interviews by Sri Chithralaya Gopu.
