HI VINATHA,

FOR ME, PALLAVA NAATTU RAJAKUMARIKKU SOUNDS LIKE FALLING ON KARNATAKA DEVAGANDHARI SIDE MORE THAN ABHERI.MAY BE ,AS REPEATEDLY STRESSED ,IN CINE MUSIC SUCH STRICT DELINEATIONS CANNOT BE MADE,PARTICULARLY WITH THE MASTERS GEMS.

AINTHU ADI KULLARIN MEDHAMAIYAI ENDHA "SCALE" I KONDU ALAKKA
MUDIYUM?

HI VINATHA,

YOUR CLASSIFICATION OF KARNATAKA DEVAGANDHARI AS "DIKSHITHAR TRADITION" IS PROBABLY THE CLOSESEST DESCRIPTION POSSIBLE. IT DOESNT LOOK TO COME FROM HINDUSTAANI BECAUSE TREATISES ON HINDUSTAANI OFTEN REFER THIS TO ABHERI AS RAAG ABHIR WHICH HAS COME TO HINDUSTAANI TRADITION FROM SOUTH.THIS IS OFTEN REFERRED AS OBSCURE RAAGA WHICH DOESNT FIT INTO ANY OF TEN THATS OF HINDUSTAANI SYSTEM.

MY LITTLE HUNCH ON ABHERI IS IT HAS STRONG OVERTONES OF PERSIAN MUSIC ,SO IT SHOULD HAVE COME TO US FROM PERSIA.BUT HOW COME IT IS REFERRED AS COMINGFROM SOUTH TO HINDUSTAANI IS A MYSTERY,WHICH NEEDS TO BE EXPLORED BY MUSICOLOGISTS.

SOME OF THE NUMBERS IN ABHERI WHICH HAVE BEEN POWERFULLY COMPOSED BY IR ARE "MAALAYIL YAARO MALARODU PESA" FROM "KSHATRIYAN" AND " VAA PONMAYILE".( MSVIANS MANNIKKAVUM)

YAEH,YAEH,IT IS DIKSHITHAR VAZHI RAAGAM WHICH YOU HV WONDERFULLY PINPOINTED AS DIKSHIDAR TRADITION.

THANK YOU,

S.R.SANKARANARAYANAN

Pallava nAttu .....is by V Kumar indeed.
SRS....mAlayil is in Sudhha Dhanyasi I think. vA ponmayilE is a great song indeed.....beautifully rendered by Balu Gunds. IR had a great leaning towards SD....more than he had for Abheri. One cannot forget G Ramanathan's kaNNan mana nilayai thangamE thangam.....in Abheri.

I thought Abheri was the same as Bhimpalasi, atleast I heard Mandolin Srinivas saying that.

Composers from Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra have shown great inclination to score in Abheri (as I understand it to be). Most of Vijaya Bhaskar's works in Tamil show traces of Abheri more often that not. So was it for Rajan Nagendra and GK Venkatesh as well. V Dakshinamurthy has several Abheris in Malayalam.

Carnatic Abheri is Hindustani bhimpalasi indeed. Please don't forget poovey poochooda vaa.... & chinnanchiru vayadhil ... Meendum kokila for abheri from IR.

Vellai thamarai poovelyeruppaal....Bhimpalasi.
Manamey kanamum maravaadhey jagadheesan malar padhamey... Papanasam sivan krithi, I have heard in bhimpalasi.
Vasantha kaala kolangal.....IR, Kismut se tum hum ko mile...Pukar of ARR, Naino mein badra.....Mera saaya all in this raga.
Vinatha.

Now for the pattu this lunch hr....

Melodious , relaxed tune, casual singing by Shri.TMS.
Composition’s calm whistling with an artistic weepy, sympathetic violin passage (Balaiya comes out of Jail) LOVELY!

Vandha naal mudhal....

Paava Manippu... Deeply emotional musical album lives as long as good music lives!

love, Vinatha.
