You call it a devotional song or an emotional outburst ….. this song is a real classy number for Kadhal Mannan Gemini Ganesan’s RAMU .

This Kalyani raag scale beauty I am referring to is that spell binding KANNAN VANDHAAN ANGE KANNAN VANDHAAN

A happy living couple GG-Pushpalatha have a charming boy Ramu who is their lifeline. He gives joy, happiness , cheer and everything to them. The cruel destiny takes away the life of Pushpalatha in the form of fire which consumes her and this happens right infront of the kid Ramu. He is so stunned / shocked that he instantly becomes dumbfound. A young GG, sacrifices everything for the sake of his son now and lives mechanically only for the betterment of that poor boy under the hope that someday or other he will get his vocals back. ( GG is so singleminded that he outrightly .rejects even a good natured K.R.Vijaya’s proposal to remarry also. Who will forget the peerless Nilave ennidam nerungadhey by PBS ! ) But as time pass by , all attempts to cure go useless and GG reaches a point of frustration. By now, he becomes a wanderer and goes around directionless. At this stage he sees a temple where the veteran Nagaiyya performs a pooja on Lord Krishna singing a devotional song which goes as follows :

Seergazi Govindarajan starts with a high pitch note which he gradually brings it down . The mesmerizing Master MSV knows what output he can get from SG ! He immediately applies Sitar , flute & dolak … What a start !

The beautiful song is used at a time when the frustration reaches a breaking point . The lyrics have been carved as if they aree meant to passify / comfort GG that if one surrenders before the Supreme Lord, all your sufferings will be put to end.

Whats so great in this song ?? It’s the wonderful tune, the splendid lyrics which IMO is as good as any devotional song , the apt situation, the mind blowing singing of TMS and SG , the emotional outburst by GG and the caring / sympathetic reaction from Nagiayaa

The pallavi itself straight away addresses the situation so beautifully

Look, amazing sequence of progressive notes set now as below ( every sentence the pitch goes to very high note )

Seergazi once again continues with his solid voice :

Whenever the legendary TMS and Seergazi Govindarajan sing in one platform, invariably it happens to be a straight challenge between the 2 singers of different range with each giving their very best and venture into a friendly competition . Only we who really get baffled by their wonderful rendition that we become speechless & declare both of them as joint winners ! Few examples of their competing songs are ….Vendriduven ..naattayum naadhathaal … from Agathiyar …… Thiruchendoorin kadalorathil…from Deivam ….

Actually, the first few minutes are occupied by SG which must have been agonizing wait for TMS as he storms in and bursts into a series of emotions

Suddenly TMS storms in his own inimitable way :

Finally MSV makes both sing together as if to declare truce !

Melody King MSV displays a variety of feelings through the song :

When Seerkazi sings, it looks totally DEVOTIONAL

But when TMS sings, it appears absolutely EMOTIONAL

MSV is a genius as he knew clearly as to which singer has to be used for GG . Within the same movie, he had already given to PBS for that classic NILAVE ENNIDAM NERUNGAADHE for another situation.
Here the tune being very emotional set for a surcharged atmosphere, he chooses TMS . I bet , nobody could have delivered this song better with such an impact .

TMS hardly must have sung for GG . The numbers might not even cross 20 but MSV with a deep insight has used him for this extraordinary song. IMO, one of the reasons for the success of this song is having used TMS

I like the way TMS intercepts midway during the song through Kanaa Kanaa . He brings to the front, the hurt feelings of a Father who is deeply worried about his son’s future.

The song ends on a positive note with both TMS and SG singing a chorus .

The movie has some superb songs :

1. Pachai maram ondru
2. Nilave ennidam nerungaadhe
3. Muthuchippi mella mella thirandhu varum

As wonderfully analyzed by our friend G.Jayaram earlier, applying Kalyani , MSV can give a devotional song like this . The same MSV can also produce MANNULAGIL INDRU DEVAR IRANGI VARUGIRAAR , a Christian song !

Some more 'Jovial' numbers by this duo...

Dear Balaji, Saradaa mam and others,
All your observations on KANNAN VANDHAAN are fine and aesthetic. There is some hidden mesmerism in this song. There have been a number of devotional/ soothing numbers in the history of TFM. But, this item carries the feelings of humanity, as it touches upon the varied sufferings of people who have exhausted all the avenues of mitigation. Besides, the the arrangement of the song sequence in the movie was such that instant acceptance comes to the viewer from the totally different / seemingly unplanned arrival of hero and his suffering son to a new place seriously engaged in prayer. Needless to say when it comes to any Kannan number the Kavignar and Mellisai Mannar are thoroughly blessed by LORD KRISHNA himself [as innumerable songs stand testimony to the glory of KaviArasar and Sevi Arasar the indomitable pair]. As for MM , he enjoys the direct blessings Goddess Saraswathy as we see from the way he handles tunes, establishes his supremacy of orchestration with predictable fineness and unpredictable elegance in deviations in all songs. Among the stalwarts of TFM, the era of Kannadasan -MSV has contributed several such items -devotional or Philosophic to tide over phases of uncertainty in life. I know of several individuals who have mustered their courage and balance by simply listening to such songs without having to resort to long spells of psychiatric care and medication. May I just conclude saying that words rendered with honesty delivered in musical form from the souls of composers can rapidly heel the listener. That is the mesmeric influence of Kannan Vandhaan.
Warm regards Prof. K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Dear Balaji Sir,

This song "kANNAN VANTHAN" is so special to me. I have featured this song as one of my Top-10 songs of MSV.

This song takes us so close to the heart of the poor father who prays for his son. Kannil kanneerai vara vaikkum song ithu. When I listen to this song anywhere, my other jobs are kept aside, till this song is over.

MSV ayya, neengal needoozhi vaazhga!!!

P. Sankar.

(I still feel that Shivaji would have made this song more memorable "on screen" than what GG has done; look at the emotions Shivaji shows for the songs 'kettathum kodupavaney' and 'aatuvithal yaaroruvar aadatharey kanna')
