Dear Friends,
Songs in NV are a special genre in the sense that the movie is quite a different piece by the story line. There are just no duets, The songs do not share anything in common except their grandeur. With my limitations for song analysis, I do not intend any kind of indulgence. Still I have opened this thread for some other issues that interest us.
In all there are Six songs and all of them drive the story instead of proving an impediment - a current malady in TF. Let us consider each item for its role to the story line and also look at MSV who has performed a magnificent job as a composer.
MUTHUKKALO KANGAL [ KaNNadasan-- TMS, PS] A supreme composition, staying fresh by the sheer beauty of seamless merger of ragas and a distinctly fine orchestration where strings and bongo percussion form a mesmerising back up. This song has all the respect as given to NaaLam naaLam , though the number of instruments employed is far less. The memerism begins at the very opening and lasts long after the song is over - a firm declaration of MSV on his composing prowess. The song is a dream sequence number with Sivaji believing to be in love with K.R.V. Poetic prowess of K.D is seen in 'Kadalin alaigaL odi vandhu kaalai neereatta'. also
'Virundhu kaetpadhenna adhaiyum viraindhu kaetpadhenna' , and
'Vazhai thoraNa meLaththodu poojai seivadhenna, with a fantastic play of bongo, while through the song strings vibrate through our souls.

NENJIRUKKUM ENGAKUKKU [Valee-- TMS and co ]
A happy -go-lucky style of song that demonstrates the will of determination to honourably live even if jobless. That the people sing and dance near the beach road is a suggestion of their open life. Also a very good ensemble of Mandolin-Guitar-Drum lending a smooth back-up to a rapid number. The tune looks absolutely authentic in smooth flow of thought and orchestration. Another grand demonstration of male chorus by MSV. I do not know if MSV has lent his voice to this number, but has certainly lent his soul.

KaNNan varum neramidhu [ KaNNadasan - - PS] A WONDERFUL SONG THAT SERVES AS A TOOL FOR MELODY ANALYSIS[ by Mr.SL] prompting my revisiting the movie causing our present [pleasant too] suffering. A song that drives MR mad and gets him closer to Gitanjali, as he is suspicious of his wife. The character surrenders in toto and needless to say that the orchestration has provided the right ambience for a dance that readily entices the viewer. Actually this song floors MR for ever and as such it is a kaNNanan [kaalai] vaarum naeramidhu effort by Gitanjali,. It renders KRV helpless , bringing Sivaji to intervene to the extent of self sacrifice
POOMUDIPPAL INDHA POONGUZHALI [ KaNadasan-- TMS] A never before kind of song for its content, relevance and skill of story propulsion. An excellent piece by its rich poetry of depicting the wedding sequence using words "anjanam theetti' ' poovai', 'pootti', 'mangalam sootti' 'Kaiththalam' etc not frequently used in daily life. The orchestration of using Nadhaswaram, Thavil and plain reading of weddding invitation with just Thavil rightly embellished the song that has no parallel thus far in TF.

ENGAY NEEYO NAANUM ANGAE [KaNNadasan -- PS]
Another propeller ofthe story where the genuine wife stands by her husband in an effort to assure him of her support what ever his disposition to her. A melancholy- rich piece that stands testimony to MSV's class in variety. Even percussion beats are melancholic drowning the listener to the centre of gravity. [ I remember to have read that PS was so much depressed at her inability to reproduce what MSV had taught. Imagine what would have been the impact if PS were to admit so. She was reported sobbing and MSV had to console her]

NINAITHTHAL PODHUM PAADUVAEN [ KaNNadasan -- S J ] The song is rendered at the behest of MR who is deeply drunk and seeking Gitanjali's song and dance. Another mesmeric number set to rapid riot of notes providing wonderful opportunity for Bharatha Natyam movements, besides lengthy aalaps calling for swift changes between swaras and lyric. Certainly a feather on SJ's cap. The play of Tabla in this song is a matter for deeper analysis by experts.
MSV has taken a clean 'VISWAROOPAM' in this number setting aside any qualms in composition, melody, orchestration, embellishment, clarity in words and the total mastery over every domain of film music.

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Prof.,
Your write-ups about this movie (all topics) are really great.
I missed the songs except Ninaithal Podhum... , when they showed this movie today in one of the channels (AMN).

You are bringing out the song sequence in front of our eyes.

Lucid read. Thanks Prof.
"ninaithhAl pOthum...." is yet another testimony to the fact that MSV did indeed teach the Tamil Film Music world on how to score music for a situation. High strung stuff set to Gamanasrama scale which mothered Hamsanandi. To note, when a situation demanded a highly emotional portrayal (maybe combined with dance), composers that followed MSV used Hamsanandi as in "rAga deepam Etrum nEram" (payaNangaL mudivathillai) , "vEdam....nAdam" (salangai oli) etc. MSV taught the Tamil film music world on what to do when.

DEAR PROF,

EXCELENT SERIALISING ON "NENJIRUKKUM VARAI" ,A VERY COMMENDABLE WRITING. NOT EAGER TO SEE "MUTRUM" ON THIS.

VATS,

"NINAITHHAAL PODHUM PADUVEN" IS INCOMPARABLE COMPOSITION.
THE RAAGA HAD A UNIQUE ,UNIQUE INTERPRETATION IN THE HANDS OF THE MASTER. IT NEITHER SOUNDS PURELY LIKE "POORYADANASHRI"(HINDOOSTAANI LIKE) AND NEITHER LIKE PURE HAMSANANDHI .SIMPLY AMAZING . USAGE OF THIS RAAGA AS MENTIONED IN YOUR LIST BY SUBSEQUENT COMPOSER LOOKS PALE COMPARED TO OUR MASTER.

AN ABSOLUTE GEM AND OUTLANDISH STUFF.

Yes, SRS masterful stuff. This is one of the number I do not prefer listening to for the discomfiture it causes (to be viewed positively) in me much like 'mAlai pozhuthin', 'kaNNA sugamA Krishna sugamA'. Yes, on your other observation too, adaptation of this idealogy by other composers is all banal stuff, least impactful and very hackneyed, common place representation. They give you a tiresome feeling, a feeling of having heard such outputs a million times.

Great way of saying it ....." MSV lent his soul". How true....that was his sole purpose too, the soul purpose Smile Wah ! Wah! That touched me. Thanks Prof. Truly the big hearted composer our MSV is !!! When other composers are left groping in the name of composing digging deeper and deeper into their music deprived hearts, MSV is left groping trying to hold back what flows through him in unabated cascades.

Dear Prof. Raman,

Engal "Nenjirukkum Varai" mattum alla, engal Ninaivirukkum Varai Marakka Iyalatha oru write-up. Great to know the amount of efforts of not only the people involved in making this movie, but your efforts to bring it to this forum is highly commendable. As Vatsan & SRS have opined, truely only MSV could bring in such emotions stirring our souls in any song, in any given situation. No wonder our souls directly get linked to our Master's!!!! when we listen to his immortals.

MSV moments, Soulfullllllllllllllllllllll Moments!!!!! Thanks Prof for a Soulful writing too.
