Dear Friends,
Nature's game of settlements keeps going with the latest addition of Mr.Nagesh to the list. He is a personality who came to the limelight the hardest way. He hailed from Dharasuram a tiny town in Erode Dt. Nagesh was a class III employee in Railways and had a burning desire for acting. Mr.V.Gopalakrishnan [another seasoned actor],Mr.Valee and Mr.Sreekanth [VeNNira Aadai] all with stage experience were sharing a small accommodation in Triplicane area in the 196os. They all had some contact with Mr.K.Balachander who was floating his dramas through his troupe "RAGINI RECREATIONS" in Chennai as an amateur effort. Mr.K.B was an employee of AG's office and another important constituent of the team was Mr.Sunderrarajan [Major] who was an employee of Chennai Telecom as an inspector. All had the urge to prove themselves. Among the group it was Sreekanth who was well placed at midlevel cadre in USIS. Fighting for a decent life, these people were turning every stone, knocking at every door. When it came to the issue of breakthrouh in movies it was Mr. Nagesh who made a good impact as a comedian in that blockbuster from CVSridhar's "NENJIL ORE AALAYAM" with Manorama. Then on, he never turned back and movie after movie Nagesh soared high. His technique was in 'timing' an utterance and transform simple statements into comic ones. He had a wonderful 'body language' offering the richest range of emotions. He can handle pathos with absolute command to a telling effect. An ardent fan of the Hollywood actor Jerry Louis, Nagesh reflected him without blindly imitating JL. Instances of his grand acting are replete in TF history though his physique suited Comedy as per the standards prescribed for hero in 1960s.Who can forget his role in "kalai kovil?" Had he born some 30 years later and stepped in to TF, certainly he would have held the industry in his clutches, perhaps as a hero. For those who may not be aware, I wish to add that Nadesh was among the best dancers that TF industry has seen. It was a pity that in those days , the media and the audience were only hero-conscious and zero-sensitive to many other domains of acting and movie-making. Certainly NAGESH is a rare gem. We stay deprived.
MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE,
Warm regards Prof. K. Raman

Dear All,

My sinciere condolances to all who have lost a great motivator and a man who set an example for others. This is especialy applicable for those who felt thay have only negatives and no positives left for them to excell in any field. Mr. Nagesh proved that irresrective of the physique and non availablity of positive factors, we could still make it in a big way with our own burning desire to excell.

His speciality is that he could make us laugh without even delivering the diologue. I recently saw the movie 'Pudhiya Paravai'. In one scene he would make Mr. VKR feel as if he was killng a cat and making a dish out of it but actually he would keep the cat between his laps and only cutting the vegitable and in the process making the cat shout. There was no dialogue for 2 minutes and we would be submerged in laughter.

He is probably the only actor who has done a role of a dead body. That was not acting, but I felt he was really behaving how a dead body would be by being very stiff. But when I saw him today in the TV as a real dead body I felt this is just acting. He cannot be erased on our memory.

NAGESH'S demise is definitely a irreparable loss to the film industry in general and TFM in particular.

The variety of roles he played, as a comedian, a hero, a villain etc were all unique and none can match his.

He was very close to Sri MSV and used to stay in touch with him quite frequently.

As fans we are not able to digest his demise, guess how MSV would be feeling !

Whether the industry willl remember or not the contribution made by Nagesh all these decades, we will remember , for ever !!

Golden words Ramki Sir, straight from our hearts we feel the same. While we appreciate new artistes getting recognition, it is a pity that the Government of India did not recognise Nagesh duly in his life time.

I am deeply saddened by the demise of Nagesh - one of the most naturally talented actors of Indian filmdom. He excelled in every role that he played. He could make us cry with the same ease with which he was able to make us laugh. As Prof. Raman states, he could make even a simple sentence or even a single word sound very funny by his timing, facial expressions and body language. It is tough on tamil film rasikas like all of us, coming so soon after the demise of CV Sridhar.

I have been watching Kadhalika Neramillai tonight, my God! what a movie.

All I can say is, the death is only for his body. His name and fame will live forever and his movies will continue to entertain not only us but the generations to come.

May his soul rest in peace.

Nagesh is known for his outstanding dancing skills. I was particularly impressed by his dancing for the song 'Aththai magal raththinaththai aththaan marakkavillai' from Panakkaarak Kudumbam. Though this song is performed by MGRr and Saroja Devi, during the interludes, it will be Nagesh's dancing. There are three interludes for the three charanams and he dances in three different ways! He will dance very fas,t stretching his body to incredible extremes like a circus artist. It is a breath-taking performance. Certainly one of his best.

Another interesting thing is, while the song is sung in a slow pace (because MGR sings in a pretended drunken state), the interlude has a fast-pacing orchestra. This seems to have been especially created to facilitate Nagesh's dancing. At the end of the interlude, there is a transition piece of instrumental music which takes the song back to its slow pace. A wonderful construction by MSV. If we hear the song in audio,we will wonder why the interlude and the song have different paces. But we will appreciate the difference, if we see the video. (We can observe such an apparent incongruity in the song 'Aayiraththil oruththi ammaa nee' of Kai Koduththa Deivam also)

The song itself is a beautiful number but the wonderful thing is the same song by Susila with variation in verses 'Aththai magal raththinaththai aththaan marandhaara' by Susila is a differently constructed melodious piece.

This film is shown in KTV in the afternoons once in a few months. I have not seen this song telecast in other programs.

This song is a brilliant amalgam of Kavignar's lines, VR's music and Nagesh's inimitable performance, with MGR and Saroja Devi only as a side attraction!

Dear All,

I have been an ardent fan (who wouldn't be by the way???) of Shri. Nagesh and I got the rarest of opportunities to meet him along with our Legend MSV when both of us had gone to his residence to personally invite Shri. Nahesh for the Piano concert organised by MSVTIMES.COM.

Nagesh's younger son accompanied both of us into his room. By this time I started having goose pimples already as I was going to meet the Greatest Comedian this continent has ever produced!!! Nagesh was seated on his chair.......deeply involved in some thought (face written with a lot of worries all over and for me to see this Nagesh was difficult and by then my eyes were filled with tears) with a near finished cigarette in between his fingers. I was worried because the fire of the cigarette had almost reached the filter and the next was his fingers..... Stunned silence.....

Nagesh just couldn't believe his own eyes as he is seeing his most favourite composer right in front of him.... His eyes brightened like a child and he threw a broad smile at MSV and welcomed him. MSV at once yelled at Nagesh and said..."Ennada innum cigarette pidichindu irukkey.....Nagesh replies...Naan eppa vitten ithai??? I didnt know whether to laugh or cry as his timing yet again was unbelievable!!!!!! We spent about 10 minutes talking to him and even acknowledged to me that he (Nagesh) was his biggest fan!!!! Very true indeed. Legend Nagesh couldn't make it for the programme owing to poor health. I was really a blessed soul to be next to this Legend of a Comedian who made everyone laugh thro' their lives but continues to do so even if he is not around us.

NAGESH SIR......... THANK YOU FOR CHEERING US THRO' OUR UPS & DOWNS!!! MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE!!!

CHEERS
NAGESH IS COMEDY
VAIDY

Dear friends,
Who can forget the combination of MM-Nagesh? The song, the dance, the lyrics...

The song "Avalukkenna azhagiya mugam" by TMS-LRE for Nagesh is an absolute epitome of dance-composition-orchestration-live orchestration-singing-reality and what not? Nagesh will live forever in the minds of people as just not a comedian, but also as a dancer, and a singing star, apart from the character roles he played effortlessly. Oh, the song MM himself sings for him - "Kandadai sollugiren", a lucky actor indeed!

May his soul rest in peace.

There could be many more events linking Nagesh and MM. I hope these will be shared here.

ram

i think it should be nenjil ore aalayam if i am right

in the mankind many people come and die and only few put their stamp and one among them is nagesh

in my opinion had he not been a comedian he would have shined equal to NT in serious acting .

but destiny had something and it so happened that he shone in a different way

Dear Friends,
I find refrences to Nagesh,Sridhar, MM as associates. Certainly there were such grand alliances in several movies involving the three. Perhaps a masterpiece by all the three was the not-so-celebrated movie "Kalai kovil". Nagesh had portrayed the role of a perpetualy drunken man and had done a marvellous piece. When he asks a lady of her name, she replies "Rosy" Nagesh in his candid calm play shoots back "it used to be the name for pets[ dogs]" There were many such timely pieces. Sridhar- Nagesh- MM have churned out excellent pieces in Tf. Some references to those would be timely to recall their glories.
Thank you. Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Mr.SRS,
While thanking you for the list of songs , a small correction apears valid. Yaen enra kELvi is an MGR starrer with Nagesh . The song you intend referring to is 'kELvi pirandhadhu andru' from "pachai VilLakku" . We can also include 'varavu ettaNa' of "Bhama vijayam" though Nafesh is one of the artistes on screen in that song.Another could be 'Chikku mangu chikku mangu chacha pa pa' of "USV".
Thanks for the opportunity.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear friends,
Nagesh proved his versatility in almost all types of characters. He deserved more oscars than hollywood actors which fact is substantiated by his portrayal in the folllowing films which many of you might not be aware.
1. Unnai Pol Oruvan - Jayakanthan's story. This film was released at the Casino where I saw the film. To my dismay this film ran to almost empty house in the second week and of course, removed very early. You should have heavy heart to control your emotions on Nagesh's portrayal.
2. Patham Pasali. This is also a KB-Nagesh combo. The song vellaimanam konda pillai onnu, in V Kumar's tune, is not only an haunting melody but also soul stirring. This film was released in Midland Theatre and Nagesh played the role of a dubbawala.
3. Kalyana Oorvalam - He portrayed the uncle role for Manimala's character. Her father would demise early to leave the burden on Nagesh, his younger brother. Nagesh, a rickshaw puller, finding it difficullt to make two ends meet, would sacrifice his day meals and earn hard money and accrue to needed sum but only to a tragic end. This movie was relelased in Paragon Theatre and I saw it in the second week, paid 75 paise for 61 paise ticket, for Nagesh's outstanding performance and for the songs by R. Parthasarathy. Notable are Koondhalile Nei Thadavi and Andavan mugathai paakkanum.
This is only a sample.
Raghavendran.
