DHARMAVATHI
There are three songs which are based on this raga by MM.
‘Kaadal Kaadal Endru Pesa’ – From ‘Utharavindri Ulle Vaa’. This is one my favorite song.
‘Hello My Dear Wrong Number’ – A very different style in the movie ‘Manmadha Leelai’
‘Ammanai Azhagu Migum Kanmanai’- From ‘Avan Oru Charithiram’
There is also another opinion that this is not raga ‘Dharmavathi’ but a Hindustani raga called ‘Madhuvanthi’. I feel especially the song ‘Kadal Kaadal’ is more of a Hindustani style for which there is a proof in the movie itself. Mr. Maali and Venneeradai Moorthy discuss about the Hindustani style of this song after the song was over in that movie. The director would not have kept that dialogue with out knowing from MM that it was based on the Hindustani style.

The song "Illakkanam maarudo" from Nizhal Nijamagirathu seems to have a touch of Madhuvanti. I am not very sure. But, the strains seem similar.
I feel that our MM is probably the earliest to handle this unique Raaga in movies, and very beautifully too (of course!)!
