Place: Recording Studio
Situation: MSV composing Varavendum oru pozhudhu
MSV composing tunes and Sridhar listens. Sridhar agrees for the tune of second line (varamalirundhal suvai theriyadhu) and disapproves the tune for first line. MSV disagrees and is adamant on his tune. Sridhar becomes tense, argues, leaves the spot. Gopu and Ganga stunned and rush to Sridhar to pacify him. Gopu and Ganga do not want any misunderstanding. Come to MSV to request to respect Sridhar's opinion. MSV says no. And after a prolonged mediation, Sridhar comes again. MSV plays the tune again. Sridhar now says, ippo sariya irukku Visu. MSV says idhaithan naan appolerundhu pottindirukken. Again the argument grows. Again Gopu and Ganga say, indha pallaviye venam, varavendum endru eppo ezhudinaro, unga rendu peraiyum varavendum endru kenjuvadhe periya velaiya pochu. After a brief while, every body gets pacified and now the tune is okayed. Sridhar says, needhanappa producer, unakku pudichirundha idhaiye vechikkalam. MSV says no, no, appadi onnum ille, indha edathule indha tune than nalla irukkumnu enakku padudhu.
And the song is approved.
Result.
An excellent, unparalleled number from LR Easwari.

Thanks Raghavendran, for bringing out an interesting 'Paadal Pirantha Kathai' from old magazine. This is, indeed, a great service and treasure to the Rasikas of MM who otherwise won't have come to know of it at all !

What a song and what a determination of MM to retain it, in spite of the Director's opinion !

If for some reasons, MSV had yielded to the pressure of CVS, such a song won't have born at all for us to enjoy for life time !! Thank God !!!

Dear Mr Raghavendran
Very interesting info. Mr Sridhar was probably not familiar with Jazz Blues and hence the difference of opinion. The strange thing about blues is that it is irritating when you hear it for the first time and then it grows on you till you get addicted. The inference is that Mr.Sridhar was musically inclined to become comfortable in the second hearing and MSV was probably aware of this phenomenon of blues and did not yield ;confident that he would accept it. Greatest achievements have been quite often the result of discussions, bordering on arguments , between two giants in the field. Even now only musically inclined can appreciate the song. It would not be a surprise if Mr.Sridhar listened to the song for many years many times.
That is blues and only MSV has done justice to blues. He is in the wrong place wrong time but the best that could happen to us.

Dear Mr Raghavendran,

Thanks a lot for presenting us with news clippings from decades old magazines, which are really interesting to read.

Reffering to "ரகசியம் ... I would like to recall another song of our great Master which is not from films.

IN 1977, AIR Chennai requested MSV to compose music to almost a dozen songs on "Family Planning". The lyrics were by various lyricists including Kannadasan & Vali. After these songs were recorded at the AIR studios, they were performed at Raja Annamalai Hall, mingled with film numbers. I was one among the lucky lot in the packed audience. Each and every song was so beautifully composed that they received vociferous appreciation (more than the film numbers).

There was one song which started as "ரகஸியம், இது ரகஸியம், புது மருமகளுக்கு அவஸியம்" and sung by LRE. Again like the number from "Panakkarak Kudumbam", the song started in a husky voice and proceeded in a mindblowing manner. It was sung so beautifully by LRE. The audience enjoyed it soooooo much that there were big shouts of "once more", "once more" and MSV called back LRE to perform the song again.

At the end of the prog, I went in to the green room to meet the Master and he was sitting alone with sweat pouring out of his body. He was asking the young guy who played the double bass "தம்பி, கொன்ஜம் தண்ணி குடுப்பா". Such was his simplicity. I can't imagine if you can see any of the current day MDs sitting so simple there, in such a situation.

I asked him, how did he manage time (as you all know he was the busiest MD those days) to compose music for such songs during his busy filmy schedules. He replied "you have to cope up with the need of the hour" and ""எல்லாம் கடின உழைப்புதான்". It was not just "கடின உழைப்பு". We have to term it the "kadinest உழைப்பு".

Such things are possible by the one and only MSV.

Cheers!

Venu Soundar
