Dear Friends,
Yesterday during the programme of ‘Endrum MSV’ MSV mentioned how he changed the entire composition of the song ‘Thedinen Vandhadhu’ at the last minute since Director Sridhar was not satisfied with the earlier one. MSV said that the director wanted the mood of the song to be outspoken and fast. So he changed the tune for the same lyrics. This is the most difficult aspect in music composition. It is easy for a MD to compose a tune for a given situation but to change the entire mood of the song that too keeping the same lyrics is very difficult. I was curious how the earlier tune would have been. MSV himself sung the tune which composed earlier and there was a huge difference in the style.
MSV himself managed to make Kovai Murali sing another song ‘Deivame Deivame Nandri Solven Deivame’ in which he explained how the word was musically pronounced for the word ‘Thedinen The……dinen Kando Konden Annaiyai’. This he said was basically different of the mood between these two songs. In the case of ‘Thedinen Vandhadhu’ he said it is sexy (that is how he explained but I feel this is outlandish or say the word daring) whereas the word ‘Thedinen’ in the song ‘Deivame’ is out of affection to his mother whom he had not seen right from his birth. He deliberately repeated the word in order to convey the feeling that searching is itself a time consuming process and this he was able to convey by singing two times and extending the tune during the second time.
There is another ‘Thedal’ in the song ‘Thedi Thedi Kathirunden’ in which MSV must have been instrumental for the repetition of the word ‘Thedi’ in order to convey the same searching process.
Take this song ‘the..dum Kan Paarvai’ in which we shall see the extension of the word during the musical expression. I wish to state that the word ‘Thedi’ is itself involves ‘Nedil’ and not ‘Kuril’ and hence has a natural extension and hence MSV takes care in further extension in order to convey the bhavam.
Let us ‘Thedufy’ another song. The song is ‘Thirumagal Thedi Vandhal’ which does not have that kind of extension as in other cases. This is surprising to me. The only reason I could attribute to this his hear the ‘thedal’ is not by the person who is singing but by the second person he is referring to.
Another song is ‘Sorgathoai The….duvom’. I think here is the extension slightly larger. Because the reality ‘Sorgam’ is not easily accessable.
But the best of ‘Thedal’ happens in the song ‘Kelviyin Nayagane’. During the second charanam the singer sings the line after knowing her deserted husband is back in the concert hall during his last hours asking for her apology. She starts to find out where he is. Thus comes the line ‘Thalaivan Thriuchaanoor Vandhu Vittan, Mangai Daruma Darisanathai The..dugindraal’. She repeats the line ‘The..dungindraal’ with more extension. Not able to identify him still she repeats again but this time with an ‘aalabana’ and finishes the line when she finally finds him in the balcony.
The beauties of these lines are that the camera representing her eyes starts searching the concert hall row by row going here and there. And by the time she finishes the word during the thirds time the camera zooms on her husband. This is a classical example of how to mix the sound and the vision.
There could be many like this. Let us do the ‘Thedal’ and if you could find anymore please add to this.
Regards,

Dear Murali,
The song 'thirumgal thedi vandhaal' is from Irulum Oliyum, for which music was composed by KVM.
Another 'thedi' is in the lines:
இது தேடி அது தேடி அலைகின்றாய்,
வாழ்வில் எது வந்து சேர்ந்தாலும் தவிக்கின்றாய்
from the song 'இக்கரைக்கு அக்கரை பச்சை' from the film 'அக்கரை பச்சை' sung by MM himself with perfect bhaavam. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

Friends,
There is a song rendered by Vani Jayaram, composed by MM (hope I am right?):"Naan thedi konde iruppaen, un pakka thunai...". A similar bhavam is expressed by the singer in this. Maybe the situation in the movie might have demanded, and MM has composed this one beautifully with that stress on "thedal".

Dear Mr Murali,
Nice info on the reconstruction of a song and the difficulty involved. I think MSV , if required , can compose all the songs with the same lyrics in a movie each having a different tune and mood.
One of the songs in this context is by Kalaivanar Thiru N.S.Krishnan.
"Thenae unnai thedi thedi nan alaindhanae.". I wonder which picture it is from and who was the MD. Regards.

Hi,
As Mr Raghavendran has mentioned,"Thedi Varum.." is one of the uncountable masterpieces of the Master. The beauty is that he Legend has composed the interlude music in this song in two different ways (like he did for "Sondham Eppodhum Thodar kathaidan") and both are fantastic. It is simply amazing as to how he managed such things in spite of his most hectic schedules in those days. It is most unfortunate that both these songs are never shown on TV channels.
Regards,
Venu Soundar |
