Dear friends,
Despite my inadequacy in analysing the compositional nuances and the ensembles there of in songs, I deem it a pleasant duty to recall the varied aspects of MSV's compositions as a method of apprisal besides my own appreciation. Herein, I point out certain numbers with their movie names in brackets . For the sake of optimising the space utility, Iwould be referring to the song alone. At the same time any other pieces that can be considered for similar parameters may please be added by our friends.
All MDs use instruments. Some do it for effective orchestration. Still fewer are those who carefully blend the musical notes. What I treat as ingenuity is THE BLENDING OF NOTES - INSTRUMENTAL AND NON- INSTRUMENTAL, TO BREATH-TAKING PERFECTION BY MELODIOUS FUSION. Please consider these items.

VAARAI EN THOZHI [Paasa malar]
SANDHANAM KUNKUMAM [Ragasiya police115]
BOOMIYIL IRUPPADHUM [Shanthi nilayam]
1000 1000 AANDIN MUNNAE [Dheerga sumangali]
MANJAL MUGAM NIRAM MARI [Karnan]
SIRIPPIL UNDAGUM RAGATHILAE [Engirundho vandhaal]
I have selected these to pinpoint the elements of ingenuity in composing the songs. Our friends can add further by analyses / enlargement.
Vaarai en thozhi was far ahead of its times by a variety of nuances in orchestration. These include the chanting of manthras to the final phase.Fidelity in this segment with purohit type of voices [without disharmony to the flow of the song] has helped a natural culmination of the theme. Even more interesting has been the insertion of Hand Clapping that enters and leaves the fray adding to the beauty of the song in typical MSV punch.
Sandhanam kunkumam konda thamaraippoo opens with well-timed Hand claps brilliantly inviting the singer to open up.What an imagination! Soon the singing of "happy birth day to you" sets the tone for the situaion. A marvellous composition by sheer non-instrumental voice-articulation.Hats off to the whole team.
Boomiyil iruppadhum vaanathil parappadhum is a melodious piece with rapidly reaches a crescendo with a brilliant nuance. Hand claps and playing of tabla both match and compete setting the mood of flying. This has been enhanced with a chorus of wordless children voices , TMS finishing in ecstasy -Saachoo Saachoo and flute taking it to skies! All effects are generated by sheer blending of instruments and noninstrumental species of sounds to the right pace and pitch.
Manjal mugam niram maari is another song where Hand claps lend excellent backup to the later charanams , suggesting the ebullient mood of the song.
1000 1000 aandin munnae is another such item in which a fine play of tabla, laughter, and singing of quick swaras have been employed by MSV in grand style in bringingforth the intended happy mood.
Sirippilundagum ragathilae is too well known for its rich embellishments. But what invites our attention is, to have composed a laughter pattern that fits ably to the swaras to follow and die off without killing the song!
In the items suggested, one can find the generation of natural harmony though different pieces are brought together like chanting, clapping, laughing and wordless rendition of typical notes. Certainly these are indicative of the desire to enhance the effect in a song. Certainly MM is a giant and glorious too.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Yes . Best example (we can say lesson). POO MUDIPAL from NENJIRUKUM VARAI. How beautifully MSV synchornised NADHASWARAM AND THAVIL .
To start with amazing first interlude with veena/violin/flute and MSV hit the nail in the second stanza. NIGAZUM PARTHIBAN ANDU AVANI THINGAL IRUBATHAM NALL (supported by THAVIL) and lyric ends with THANGAL NALVARAI VIRUBUM RAGHURAMAN/RAGHURAMAN . Here MSV used NADHASWARAM MAJESTICALLY and entire complextion of the song changes dramatically. MADHARAR THANGAL MAGAL ENDRU PARTHIRUKKA supported NADHASWARAM. watch the emotion MASTER GIVES KADHALAL MELLA KAL PARTHU NADANTHU VARA.
When Lyric ends with KOTTIYATHU MELAM , MASTER gives emotion of brother in NADHAASWARM . How he changed the tune suddenly in KAITHALAM THANTHEN ENN KANMANI VAZGHA. and song back to normal mode and ends POO MUDIPAL with slow tempo.

I think MSV MADE director job easy by scoring such effective tune and orchestra or we can say he gave blue print for director for subsequent process. Due credit to TMS . What a singer. Emotion to the core. we cannot imagine anyone for this song.

regards
ramesh
