QAWWALI - A Celebration Music!

Waa Re wav!!!
Brilliant write up.
All I understand is this - MSV is a phenomenon. Nothing less.
This confirms my belief that he brought classical music to lay people.
LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR OF LIGHT MUSIC.

DEAR Ram ,
Certainly your current posting on Qawwali is grand to say the least. For various reasons, I genuinely rate this piece very high. Basically Tamil audience have very little scope to have a grasp of this genre of music from moghal derivation. That you have touched upon its moorings without running into the web of boredom, is a blessing of the Almighty. Your description of the setting for qawwali amply shows the difference between this form of delivery as against the broad category of group singing. Now on to film music. Being of a definite cultural setting, the occasion to use this mode of song composition would rather be remote in TFM. But, MSV has no mental blocks of any kind whatsoever when it comes to utilizing a technique without revealing the technique itself. As evidence of this, the songs in your list can themselves be cited as vivid instances. As Dr.Damodaran has put it, the dimensions of MSV can not be that easily arrested within the fetters of any definition that is restricted by its own dictates. But, that has not denied us of the glorious opportunities of enjoying this MEGA COLOSSUS FOR HIS INTRICACIES as a composer soaked in Elegance and Humility simultaneously. My sincere thanks to you for this excellent write-up on Qawwali.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Dear Ram

I do not know much about the Qawali Music. Thank you very much for enlightening me on this . We should be ever greatful to the Mellisai Mannars for presenting different kinds of music in style, instrumentation and ornamentation . Bravo! Great indeed.

Ram, why no reply to my observation about "Nerodum Vaigaiyilae and Saravana Poigaiyil"? What about new scale from Hemavathi introduced by our legend for the song adi ennadi oolagam. Please come out with your counter. I believe only these kind of exchange will enrich our knowledge.

With love

Dear Ram,

As usual you come back with a wonderful summery... Nice.

When you mentioned about the kawwali songs of Ilaiyaraja and Shanker Mahadevan, you may remember Vedha also for his beautiful Kawaali in 'Vallavanukku Vallavan'..

'paaradi kanne konjam
payithiyam aanathu nenjam'

by TMS, Sirkazhi & PS. (eventhough it is the dito tune of the Hindi original). The wonder is this song is for two famous villain actors Ashokan and Manohar (with Savithiri).

Another doubt,

the song from the movie 'Needhi',

'maappillaiye paththukkadi
mainaakutti' by TMS is also come in this kawali category...?.

and also 'Mera naam Abdul Rahman' from Sirithu vaaza vendum....?.

Dear friends,
An interesting discussion. Actually to see MSV's real authority in quawwali, you should listen to the songs
(i) Vennilavil Kudai pidikkum Shajahaanin Tajmahal - film : Pennai Cholli Kutramillai (1977)
(ii) Nawabukkoru Kelvi Nalla jawab sollaiya - Film: Baaghdad Paerazhagi (Jayalalitha's 99th film. incidentally 100th film of Jayalalitha Thirumaangalyam had the privilege of music by MSV).
(iii) Omar khayyam ezhudhi vaitha kavidai from the film Ganga Jamuna Saraswathi (SPB).
You can find the real impact of quawwali composed by MSV in these songs. Of course there are innumberable numbers in which MSV had included quawwali form in the songs partially.

Really, it was an enlightening post on Qawali concept which must have come from North western frontier.

Pls write more such interesting aspects of music . We all look forward to this . I could see a very seasoned approach in all your writings. This augurs well for the future of this hub dear Very Happy

FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL THE MSV DEVOTEES, PLS FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW FOR LISTENING TO THE EVERGREEN SONG VAAN MEETHILEY
fm Chandirani :

Just listening to the commentary from the Master MSV before the song and how that flash occured to him before composing !

The wonderful voice of Ghantasala and Banumathy !

And as mentioned by our Ram, this superb song has a link to Vaa venilaa ( mella thirandhadhu kadhavu )

Another song which is a mild qawali could be that one in Kaviya thalaivi .

Coming to the brilliant Vaa venilaa, its well known that the Master had given the tune and Maestro Raja had done the orchestration . The Qawali at its awesome best during this song . One can also visualise the beautiful Amala in that Qawali dance dressing as well !

A.R.Rehman's beautiful composition is that Varaha nadhikarai oram. Thanks for mentioning about that also . I think , he took inspiration from that Pakistani Ghazal expert Nazrat Fateh Ali Khan .

What a tabla has to express was conveyed in a mind blowing manner through SOL SOL SOL in Ayiram penmai malaratumme ! Vow great .

Ram, pls bring more such stimulating writeups. Cheers Very Happy
