"ஒளி விளக்கு"

மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் அற்புத இசையமைப்பில் வரிசை கட்டி வந்து கொண்டிருந்த படங்களில் ஒன்றுதான் ஒளிவிளக்கு. 1968 ல் வெளியான இப்படம் திரு எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் நூறாவது படம் என்ற பெருமையும் பெற்றது.

ஆனால் இப்படத்தின் பாடல்களைப் பற்றி பேசும் வாய்ப்பு வருபோதெல்லாம் அனைவரும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து குறிப்பிடுவது இப்படத்தில் வரும் இரண்டு பாடல்களைப்பற்றி மட்டும்தான் என்பது, உண்மையான இசையை ரசிக்கும் ரசிக்கும் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஏமாற்றம் அளிக்கும் ஒன்று என்பதில் எந்த சந்தேகமும் இல்லை.

நான் சொன்ன இரண்டு பாடல்களில் ஒன்று, பி.சுசீலா பாடிய
"ஆண்டவனே உன் பாதங்களை நான் கண்ணீரில் நீராட்டினேன்"
என்ற பாடல். இதை எல்லோரும் ஒருமித்து பாராட்டிப்பேசக் காரணம், அடிபட்டுக்கிடக்கும் கதாநாயகனைக் காப்பாற்ற அனைத்து மதத்தவரும் பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதாக காட்டப்படுவது. மற்றும் கதாநாயகர் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் வள்ளல் குணம் போன்றவற்றை தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் புகழும்

"உள்ளமதில் உள்ளவரை.... அள்ளித்தரும் நல்லவரை
விண்ணுலகம் வாவென்றால் மண்ணுலகம் என்னாகும்"

போன்ற வரிகள். பல்லவிக்கு முன் தொகையறாவோடு அமைந்த பாடல் இது. இசையமைப்பு அருமை என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை.

அடுத்து அனைவரும் குறிப்பிடும் இன்னொரு பாடல்

"நாங்க புதுசா கட்டிக்கிட்ட ஜோடிதானுங்க
நல்ல பாட்டு படிக்கும் வானம்பாடிதானுங்க"

குறவன் குறத்தி பாடுவதாக அமைந்த இப்பாடலில் திரு எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் செல்வி ஜெயலலிதாவும் குறவன் குறத்தியாக வேடம் கட்டி ஆடியதால் புகழ்பெற்றது.
இவையிரணடையும் தவிர்த்து அவர்கள் குறிப்பிடுவதானால்
"தைரியமாகச் சொல் நீ மனிதன்தானா" என்ற டி.எம்.எஸ்.பாடலைச் சொல்வார்கள். அதற்கும் காரணம் கதாநாயகன் இப்பாடலில் குடிப்பழக்கத்தின் கேடுகளைச் சொல்வதனாலும், ஒரு காட்சியில் அவர் ஐந்து வேடங்களில் தோன்றுவதனாலும்தான்.

ஆனால் இம்மூன்றையும் தாண்டி, உண்மையிலேயே இசையை ரசிக்கும் ரசிகர்களுக்கு அரிய விருந்தாக அமைந்த மூன்று முத்தான பாடல்கள், அதே ச்மயம் மற்றவர்களால் கண்டு கொள்ளாமல் விடப்பட்டவை

"நான் கண்ட கனவில் நீயிருந்தாய்"

"ருக்குமணியே...பப்பர..பர...பர.."

"மாம்பழத்தோட்டம் மல்லிகைக் கூட்டம்"

ஆகிய மூன்று முத்தான பாடல்கள்தான். நாமும் அவற்றை கண்டுகொள்ளவிட்டால் எப்படி..?. அதற்குத்தான் இந்த சின்ன பதிவு.

இவைகளுடைய ராக அமைப்பு பற்றியெல்லாம் எனக்கு எதுவும் தெரியாது. ராகங்களிலும், பாடலின் நோட்ஸ்களிலும் கரைகண்டவர்கள் இக்களத்தில் இருப்பதால் அதை அவர்கள் பொறுப்பில் விட்டு விடுவோம்......... .

எல்.ஆர்.ஈஸ்வரியின் கொஞ்சும் குரலில் அமைந்த அருமையான பாடல். கதாநாயகி கிளப்பில் பாடிக்கொண்டே கவர்ச்சி நடனம் புரிவார்.
ஃப்ளூட் மற்றும் டிரம்ஸ் சகிதம் துவங்கும் முன்னிசையில் அடுத்து ட்ரம்பெட்டில் ஒரு உச்சஸ்தாயி அதைத்தொடர்ந்து வயலின் மேலே பயணித்து அப்படியே கீழே இறங்க, தொடர்ந்து கோரஸ்

இப்பாடலுக்கு அனுபல்லவியும் உண்டு. அனுபல்லவியில் பாங்கோஸின் அற்புத விளையாடல்..

இறுதியில் HEAVY POSTLUDE உடன் பாடல் முடியும்போது அடைமழை பெய்து .. ஓய்ந்த மாதிரி இருக்கும்.

(மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் ரசிகர்கள், அறுபதுகளில் வந்த 'பா' வரிசைப்பாடல்களை விட்டால் 'தொபுக்கடீர்னு' தாண்டி 'நினைத்தாலே இனிக்கும்' காலத்திற்கு வருவதை விடுத்து, இதுபோன்ற இடக்காலங்களில் மறக்கடிக்கப்பட்ட பல பாடல்களை வெளிச்சத்துக்கு கொண்டு வரவேண்டும்).

Thangal "oli vilakkal" intha site migavum pragasamaga thigazhgirathu. That was a fabulous analysis. Thairiamaga sol nee manithan thaanaa- great piano orchestrated song, TMS avarudaiya unique kuralil asathiya pallayirakkanakkana paadalgalil ennai migavumm kavarntha onru!

all songs in 'oli vilakku' are enjoyable, particularly the three you selected are good songs to hear repeaed times.

you have covered one of them. when about the rest two?. soon please.

Sharadaji,

Your analysis was superb.

I have many a time wondered how MSV used to change percussion instrument as voice switched from TMS to PS in the song. Ex "Poomaliyil Or malligai" while ending the song.

He is a "king" in using the precussion instrument adaptively. Few Ex that comes to my mind immediately "Vellikinnanthan" "naalai indha velai parthu". "KAtrukenna veli" (Later one- Mrudangam I suppose -correct me if Wrong)

The LRE song you mentioned is VERY UNFORTUNATELY forgotten for long.
Such songs with a lot of pep ,rejuvenate one's mood when depressed.
I have personaly gained a lot by listening to such songs.

Now contrast this "Uravinil 50 50" from "galatta kalyanam" composed with the same base raga. But what makes me wonder is how tune has been adapted to suit Romance in one song and Club Dance in another. Kudos to MSV for such a nice display of the versatality of the rAga.

Hi! everbody,

I would like to share a snippet re-the song "Dhayiramaaga chol nee.." (Oli Vilakkiu) narrated by the maestro himself in the Tamil weekly "Ananda Vikatan' way back in 1993.

MSV was composing simulatenoulsy for 'Oli Vilakku' and Kaviarasu Kannadhasan's 'Lakshmi Kalyanam'. It was a time when MGR and Kannadhasan were not on terms due to political reasons. A wise guy trying to get into MGR's good books commented that MSV was playing a double game by composing a same theme song like 'Dhairiyama chol nee" in 'Lakshmi Kalyanam' for Kannadhasan's movie. Upon hearing this MGR summoned MSV to his residence and asked him to play the 'Lakshmi Kalyanam'song, lyrics included.

After hearing it out through the maestro's voice and his harmonium, MGR was of the honest opinion that the songs were different both in lyrics as well as tune. MGR's flair for such technical details were well known in the studios. MSV heaved a sigh of relief after this. That song is 'Yaarada manithan'.

Similarly when MGR was producing 'Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban' he challenged MSV to come out with popular numbers like 'Aagaya panthalile' ('Pon Oonjal). He mockingly accused MSV that he is biased as all his tunes for Sivaji's films turn out to be hits but not his (MGR's). It was well known fact that both MGR and Sivaji were rivals in the acting profession. He even egged him to come out with challenging tunes so that 'Aagaya panthalile' should be removed from the top chart list. MSV, at one stage, was so stressed out that he decided to give up composing for this film altogether. MGR's persuasion made him complete the composing work. But then the end result was evident enough of the maestro's untiring efforts and professionalism

Dear Mahendraraj,
Any discussion on USV has to revolve around MSV even if hard core MGR fans may not endorse it. USV was a musical bonanza to say the least. The movie had 10 songs spread over genres and did not cater to any political agenda. This distinction is too uncommon in MGR movies. All the leadsingers- TMS, SPB, KJJ, PS, SJ, LRE were availed of. Needless to say that every song had a glamour of its own and no two songs had any resemblance. As my memory dates back to 1969, MGR was systematically refusing to accept every tune and its composition / orchestration. All through his life MSV has lived with these styles of "extraction" by movie makers. But, this time it was too cruel and MSV right away old MGR to look for someother MD and leave him alone. But, MGR was too informed to be tempted to run any risk on music. He kept on disapproving evry effort of the MD. MSV though docile in human relations was a "RAKSHASA" when it comes to very swift compositions totally of a new genre in movie after movie. Meanwhile, Govt cleared all Visa formalities and the film crew had to move off to Japan. With just a few days left MGR had to finalize the songs and naturally enormous pressure was on MSV to come out with final - acceptable song versions. In 15 days MSV made all the 10 numbers of USV and wound up before the dead line. If any one honestly looks at the song varieties , the tune range and the rich embellishments and the brilliance of the grand orchestration, a herculean feat was performed by MM who was simultaneously wanted every where. What an amount of ordeal he would have undergone to accomplish songs of the order of USV, IS ANYBODY'S GUESS. Ultimately when MSV sought MGR's OPINION ON SONGS, the latter only said "OK" implying that "nothing great". MSV was upset for he knows the effort put in and the effect drawn out. When the songs were released ofcourse after the shooting, it was a grand topic for discussion in all circles. MSV did not collect his wages and when MGR wanted to pay him MM said "Of what value is this money when the songs are not to yourliking". It created the richest impact on MGR. Why I recall it is to highlight even after strenuous labour, MM was immensely devoted to provide "satisfaction". A noble soul indeed.

Professor Sir,

I accept with you fully regarding the facts about Ulagum Sutrum Vaaliban. But your writings end in such a way that MSV and his crew did not get any pay for composing for that film. MSV writes in his autobiography that MGR forced MSV to collect the remuneration for his musical contribution in that film and MSV recalls that, that was the money he never imagined and that was the highest he had ever got in his career at that point of time. While money is not the driving force for MSV and the songs cannot be just rewarded with any amount of money, I mention this because truth has to be told in its full form. MGR had told to MSV later that he had not expressed any thing great about the songs while composing because then only MSV would do the next song more challenging to get the appreciation from him. Any way the relationships MSV had with Kannadhasan and MGR were very special. They had quarrels, special affection, care and what not.

Dear Mr Sankar,
May be I have not given the final outcome of the on-goings in USV. I never said MSV was not paid. All I wanted to highlight was MSV's approach created a very heavy impact on MGR. In fact MSV never discussed of the pay package and ONLY MGR had TO RUN AFTER THE MD and tender all kinds of explanation as to why he did not nod in affirmative for the songs. The real point I wanted to touch was, EVEN WHEN SONGS TURNED OUT TO BE SUPERHITS, MSV did not discuss the issue of payment. After all, MGR had relied on MM's prowess as a composer for most of his later films too. The fact was MSV stood head and shoulders high in that episode. I will be the last man on this globe to imagine that MSV's team of technicians can be dishonoured without due rewards to them. May be I am a poor writer in conveying the idea. Sorry if I had posted a wrong impression. Thank you for pointing out the inadequacy.

Dear MSVs

One point we should note, the film USV had been pictureised only in foreign country. But our MSV has not visited the places of USV shooting spots. It is great surprise, how he could be able to handle the instrumentations of overseas from Chennai Studio itelf especially PACHAI KILI MUTHU CHARAM and interlude of ULAGAM AZHAGU KALAIGALIN SURANGAM. Great achievement.

Dear Sarada mam,
All of us were merely looking at how MSV served the industry with a single minded devotion for all movie banners. Never for a moment the thought on how MGR could have easily helped the cause of MM occurred to us [ at least to me]. It was certainly with in the reach of people like MGR to have helped a due recognition to MSV, more so when people like RMV were able to wield enormous influence with MGR and have reaped very rich harvests of fame and fortune using MM's calibre. It was a very nice posting worth its weight in gold. I do not visualize any plausible defence in favour of the then powers that be. Hats off to you mam.
