Dear Friends ,
On this the NEW YEAR DAY of 2008, I deem it a pleasure to recall Santhi Nilayam- another musical bonanza by MSV -KaNNadasan team work. This movie took the audience by a storm of brilliance all over. If my memory serves me right, it was from the movie house of Gemini studios though marketed under a different banner's name. Also G.S MaNi was associated with this movie in more than one way. By any standards, the movie was a definite harbinger for all artistes including Mr.S.P.Balasubramainam [later SPBlasubramanian].
The movie was totally picturesque every frame challenging powerfully, every other cinematographer for the aesthetic angles and simply superb colour rendition -a feast to the eyes. The director of cinematography was Mr. Marcus Bartley - a long associate of GEMINI HOUSE of movie making. [ I rememember having been told that Mr.A.Vincent had his training under Mr.Marcus Bartley]
Another new dimension in this movie was costume selection for all the artistes and the imposing buildings and vast landscapes punctuated by captivating camera placements. This was one movie where the Art Director and the Director of Cinematography proved a perfect complements -each beautifying the other.Quite a stunning combination in a Tamil movie [1969 ]
Beside the story line justifying these additives, comedy was unobtrusive and spontaneous totally devoid of vulgarity [Gopu's dialogues]. A band of actors and actresses were there, and the audience never felt the crowd of artistes - their appearance sequences were well planned and executed. IT WAS MANJULA ONE OF THE CHILD ARTISTES WHO LATER ZOOMED UP AS A HEROINE. Actress Kanchana had a wonderful role portraying different dimensions as a teacher , lady love of love penchant hero, besides facing some tough moments of life.
Now on to the songs. Kaviarasu has given excellent songs both by content and relevance. Needless to say that MELLISAI MANNAR had once again shown his calibre throughout the movie. All Santhi Nilayam songs are elegance-personified with just no let-up any where. The orchestration as ever was of the highest class tremendously influencing the situations of the movie. Just listen to those songs, for the beauty of their recording at a time only skills mattered with no technology to scaffold any attempt. Marvellous- is just an understatement of the quality of lyric, tunes, singing and the scale of orchestration. True to the movie title all songs of this movie have a sedate influence on the listeners. Hats off to MSV who stays innocuosly silent despite achievements. May GOD BLESS him with all that is good.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Dear Professor sir,

You started this new year with a wonderful number. Yes, 'Shanthi Nilaiyam' is a evergreen treat for Best Music and Best Cinematography. Each and every song is different varieties, including the song for Vijayalalitha.. 'pennai paarthum yEn pEchu varavillai' and also for Ramaprabha... 'kangaL thEduvathum'...

Thank God, the movie was not starred by MGR or Shivaji. Otherwise the good songs will be labelled as 'MGR songs' or 'Shivaji songs'. But now they are remembered as 'MSV songs'.

Marcus Bartley won the National Award for this movie as Best Cinematographer. Those days the National Awards were very very rare to Tamil movies. They were always travelled to West Bengal, or even if it come for south, it will straight away go to Kerala. (But for this movie also MSV sir was comfortably neglected for the award, as usual).

Dear Prof. Raman,

A great write-up that made me very emotional after I read through the above lines. MSV a class apart and an unparallelled Master (as you have always said Prof. Raman) who stands taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllll above the rest!!! (in spite of his physical appearence, He is just an unbelievable Viswa Roopa Nathan when it came to Music!)

CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC
VAIDY

Kudos to the Professor for another excellent write-up.

"Shanti Nilayam" is one magnifying example to break a myth that MSV took special care and came out with great numbers only for MGR and Sivaji starrers. All the songs were gems. Though "Iyarkai Ennum" was more popular, the two PS numbers "Iraivan Varuvaan" and "Kadavul Oru Naal Ulagai Kaana" were much better numbers.

Above the songs composition, the BGM of the movie was simply outstanding and can match any English horror movie. Even if you make a layman, who does not know anything about Tamil movies, to listen to the BGM of Shanthi Nilayam, he will certify that the musical score must have been done in December 2007.

You are absolutely correct Mr Vaidy. When it comes to scoring music, the Master stands the tallest in this world. I can only compare him with another "Viswanath" i.e. Gundappa Viswanath, who was more or less the same height of the Legend, but when it came to masterly stroke play, nobody was able to match the Little Master.

Long Live MSV and his mesmerizing Music.

Cheers.

Venu Soundar

Dear Mr.Venu Sounder,
Oh ! what a parallel you have traced to MSV in Gundappa Vishwanath. It ably fits adoration as both are wizards of limb artristry- with MSV's swift fingers on harmonium while GRV has amazing footwork. All western commentators have uniformly acknowledged that GRV does not move an inch in any wrong direction even if to negotiate nasty deliveries [in an era of NO HELMETS]. Also I have read that Queen Elizabeth is a fan of Vishwanath's strokeplay. Had MSV been listened by such people of west, certainly we would have heard of their adorations on MSV too. Giants stand unmistakably tall even if we refuse to see them. Warm regards. Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai.
