Wish to start with a classic of the 60s , a tune which even today is so popular & a regular ring tone on many mobiles !

Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, this song is evergreen hit & one of the very best of Shankar Jaikishen compositions. Meena KUmari, the redoubtable legendary actress of Bollywood sings while Rajkumar & Nadira along with their friends go on a mini cruise…

Appears for the movie Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraye

The theme resembles somewhat our Sridhar triangular love forumula ……. RajKumar marries Nadira but his heart seems to be with Meena Kumari..

Look how composed and majestic while Meenakumari sings this classic !!

A thunderous prelude ……Beautiful lead Guitar , chorus, volley of violins , the foot tapping drum beats & the Accordion takes us to a joyful ferry !!

That final chord rhythm just before Lataji starts the song is mind blowing ! that sets the tone no ?

The song has terrific melody , violin / guitar counter melody , accompaniments ..

Wonderful interludes too ! soothing trumphet & drumming work…

While most of the South Indians carry a growse ( rather prejudice ) towards Lataji that she is being over valued, hyped, this song should convince all her critics that indeed she is a genius ……

Our Master often seem to cherish his association with the greats of Bollywood music especially, SDB & Shankar Jaikishen…..

Like whats happening with tamil film music today, even Hindi music also has deteriorated . So there is heavy remix / rehash / copying of old gems happening quite frequently…

Rajkumar was a very good actor he played Muthuraman’s role in Dil Ek Mandir nicely. ( Nenjil oru aalayam )… there are many movies to his credit

Look at the mild exchanges between Raj & Meenakumari during the song …..No need for dialogues….Visuals are enough !

Video for the song :

The Lyrics :
Ajeeb daastaan hai yeh
Kahan shuru kahan khatam
Yeh manzile hai kaunsi
Na voh samajh sake na hum

Yeh roshni ke saath kyoon
Dhuaan utha chiraag se
Yeh khwaab dekhti hoon main
Ke jag padi hoon khwaab se

Mubaarakein tumhe ke tum
Kisi ke noor ho gaye
Kisi ke itne paas ho
Ke sab se door ho gaye

Kisi ka pyaar leke tum
Naya jahan basaaoge
Yeh shaam jab bhi aayegi
Tum humko yaad aaoge

Friends,

This is Srini from Bangalore, India.

I believe MSV had very good relations with two Hindi film MDs other than Naushad (his respect for Naushad, which that great man reciprocated most generously, is very well known). These were Jaikishan and R.D.Burman. When Sridhar wanted to re-make Nenjil Ore Aalayam in Hindi, Shankar-Jaikishan (particularly Jaikishan) are believed to have told Sridhar that nobody could improve upon MSV's music composed for the Tamil film, and so he should retain MSV-TKR for the Hindi version also! Of course, SJ finally composed music for Dil Ek Mandir, perhaps due to pressure from financiers and distributors. But just see the respect SJ had for our MSV!

I remember seeing a very rare photo in Kumkumam magazine some years back, in which Jaikishan is sitting in a chair and MSV is holding his (Jaikishan's) hands from behind. There was such an air of camaraderie and intimacy in that photo! I wish I had retained it.

Can fellow MSVians contribute some more to this topic?

Srini

SJ along with SDB & RDB, Hemant Kumar are my most favorite Hindi FM composers.
I don't know Hindi much. But I like listening to Old Hindi songs.

Sri MSV has told in one of his interviews as follows:
Jaikishan has called him and told that he was wondering about the music of AnbeVaa.

In the film Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraye the title song Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraye by Lata will also be very good.

He is the most fagvorite MD for Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor.

Some of his greatest hits:
Bramchari
Prince
Awara
Shree 420

Dear friends,
There is a general trend / attitude that persons from a smaller ambience are inferior to those from a bigger one. This can be seen from how our cousins rate themselves as they live in US [though born and brt up in KOILPATTI]. People of Bollywood hold the same sort of self aggrandicement while rating their counterparts from Chennai. If Jaukishen has said high of MSV, the message is -- MSV has musically shattered any ego tht Jaikishan may have harboured. Many MDs know the magnificence of MSV's ability but obviously hide him from public gaze fearing that they can not be comfortable if MSv comes to limelight again. We have umpteen instances of PRIVATE ADORATIONS AND PUBLIC SILENCE ABOUT MSV. That is the practice in to-day's tinsel world.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai

Well said Dear Prof.
Undoubtedly, Sri MSV is the best indian film music composer.

Anbe Vaa mattum kettutu Jaikishen appadi solliruntharna, MSV-avargalin enniladanga paadalgala ketta avar enna sollirupar...

Recently in SunTV, they are showing movies at 10:30 PM on the mark of 75 years of Tamil Cinema.

In that majority of the movies were music by our beloved MSV.
I am not missing these movies because of the songs and music.

Dear Friends,
All movies currently being telecast [10.39 pm SUN TV] are popular movies of box office value. But , MSV has composed equally superior items for lowbudget movies . In them only the budget was low but MSV has lofted them by his rich music. Who can forget Nenjil ore aalayam, Nenjirukkum varai, Kasay thaan Kadavulada, Mohd.Bin Tuglak?-- just to name few. Even KAKAIKOVIL [PRODUCED BY MSV and Art Director Ganga] was a low budget movie whose musical treasure stays supreme holding information worthy of a Doctoral research. That is MSV!
Warm regaeds. Prof.K.Raman Madurai
