A Handful of Piano Picks - Part 14
G# Minor - G Aug - B Major - B 5th

I thank you very much for writing about one of my all time favorites. _________________ Ravikumar |

WOW, Ram!! You are too much, my friend! yenna yennamo you write & amaze us.
Kannu rendum minna minna.... carries carnatic raga keervani ambience - true raga bhaavam to my ears when it starts! (remember anubhavam pudhumai avalidam kanden.... ) You seem to know practical WCM - chord progression. That chord progression gives me that Raga keervani ambience.
This is the rt way to approach it. Regular, novice people who runs around listen to few keerthanais or slogams can also understand and you bridge the gap.
Thanks for the info.
The composer has the elegance, taste and refinement in creating a melodic, fashionable music. Adhaan podara!

Dear Ram,
As usual it is an excellent analysis of the songs KAANIRENDUM MINNA MINNA of our master and VIDIYA VIDIYA .
The way you have written did prompt me listen to both the numbers (though I have enjoyed this many times) and could listen to
every piece of orchestration you have narrrated. What an amazing songs !
I am very happy about your recalling your infant days and my rendering of VIDIYA VIDIYA song. Especially the way SPB sings INNUM ENNENNAVO EN ENNANGAL (of course as taught by MM).
Similarly the thaalam in the line SOLLITHTHARA NANIRUKKEN RAASAATHIYE -
(something similar to THEROTTAM song, Very difficult to give
Thalam unless one has good Thala knowledge - as Sampath had written)
Pl continue to mesmerise us with your writing on the mesmerising piano numbers of Mellisai Mannar !

DEAR RAM,
AS USUAL AN EXCELLENT WRITE-UP MAN !!! VIDIYA VIDIYA IS SUCH A SIMPLE NUMBER , STUNNINGLY ORCHESTRATED BY OUR MASTER THAT GIVES A POIGNANT EFFECT ON THE LISTENERS !!
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SONGS THAT HAD IMPACTED ME AS A KID WITH ITS MELODY AND THE RENDITION OF SPB WITH A SMALL LAUGHTER IN THE MUCH ACCLAIMED "SOLLI THARA NAAN IRUKKEN..." BRINGS IMMENSE HAPPINESS.
ONE CAN OBSERVE THE SUBTLE KEYBOARD SURFING THROUGH THE WHOLE SONG WITH THE PIANO CHORDS. THE SANTOOR (BY VISWESH UNCLE ???) IN THE INTERLUDE GIVES U SUCH A PLEASANT FEELING.
HAVE READ IN SOME WEBSITES THAT MOST OF OUR MASTER'S SONGS HAVE REPETITIVE INTERLUDES.... THIS IS JUST ONE OF THOSE MANY SONGS THAT HAS AN AMAZING PRELUDE WITH UNIQUE, NON-REPETITIVE AND ENCHANTING INTERLUDES WITH DIFFERENT PRESENTATION OF THE CHARANAMS AND A SMALL POSTLUDE ENDING WITH THE PIANO !!!
SO TO ALL THOSE WITH SUCH MISCONCEPTION, PLEASE DONT POST WRONG INFORMATION........!!!
"KANNIRENDUM MINNA MINNA..." - OH !!! MY GOD..... THE VIOLIN FILLING IN "PENNAZHAGHU POVATHENGHEY..." IS SOMETHING ME AND VAIDHY UNCLE HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED AND WONDERED !!
THANKS FOR THE NOTE ON CHORD PROGRESSION ..SOMETHING THAT I AM NOTICING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS SONG.... BUT TRACES OF LATIN MUSIC IS SOMETHING THAT AM STILL UNABLE TO COMPREHEND... !!
DO YOU FIND THEM IN THE USAGE OF ACCORDION ?? IF AM WRONG LET ME KNOW THE EXACT PLACE WHERE YOU FIND IT....
THE STYLISH SINGING OF L.R.E MAKES THE SONG MORE AND MORE ROMANTIC !!!
THE HUMMING , VIOLINS , ACCORDION IN THE POSTLUDE TAKES US TO A DIFFERENT PLANE !!!
THANKS FOR THE WRITE-UP....EXPECTING MORE N MORE SUCH !!
MSV RULES !!!

Dear Mr.Venkat,
You have added pep to these numbers in your own way interpreting how you are fabulously impacted by these pieces. As regards 'Repetitive interludes' in MSV songs certain clarifications may help the comprehension better. Well, it was the culture in movie songs to repeat the interludes between successive charanams and pallavi . IT WAS THE STYLE IN ALL INDIAN FILMS. Most probably, it was advantageous to stick to one pattern for a song considering the elaborate rehearsals and the need to play the entire song if errors crept in. It was only in the larger interests of serving the requirement in time. All MDs had stuck to this style until facilities started improving. In fact It was also MSV who changed this pattern whenever a variety was needed. Look at Karnan or Kadhalikka Neramillai songs you will understand that this innovation was also MSV's and other MDs of later arrival have after all been served by higher technology better, rather than by any superior innovation. To me,
MSV has left nothing for others to innovate.
Warm regards. Prof.K.Raman Madurai _________________ Prof. K. Raman

I will second Professor. Otherwise, why the same MSV who gave 3 different interludes for Avalukkenna azagiya mugam , presented with the repeat Violin interlude for Poga poga thorium. Or for that matter, Enge nimmadhi has 3 diff. ludes while Partha nyabagam illayo has repeats of 1st and 3rd. IMO, it was MSV who changed the simple musical arrangements to orchestration oriented ludes arrangement. Again, as Prof. rightly pointed out, with very limited technology he delivered . One has to run the whole song if someone makes a small mistake.
Oh now I recollect even …Oru pennai parthu versus Vannakili sonna mozi . So, in the same movie, you can see both type of structuring ! |

Dear All,
Thanks for your replies and wonderful discussions...
These two songs are gem of melodies.... completely different styles in the presentation. Amazing numbers these!
Dear Venkat,
Your write-up on these songs, from your part, is beautiful. Please take more of your favourites and present it to all of us please...
As far as the Latin Music - there is a Genre in the Spanish-Latin culture that you may be aware of - "SALSA" - which is a Peppy, Rhythm Oriented, Jubiliant & Fun Music.
But the slow and melodic form of this music is what my take. Really soulful melodies, with a sober (or) solitude themes.
Best reference I can make for you is from the film of Denzel Washington - "Man on Fire", a film that deals with Spanish gangsters in Latin American world. The end credits section will have a solo male theme in Spanish - a beautiful melody, which you can easily correlate to "Kannirendum". I wish I could send the track to you somehow - you'll love it!
Incidentally - the "Man on Fire" theme is also based on "Keervani" raag !!! (Kannirendum is also Keervani, as Vinatha pointed out)
Music has no language - How true !!!
And our Master proves this truth in each of his numbers !!! _________________ Ramkumar

Dear friends,
Pardon my reopening the topic again. Only those who have not had the glimpse of TFM over the last 50+ years would wrongly ascribe opininons on MSV's works. They should basically understand that essentially comparisons should be on COMPARABLES and should not be indulged in with skewed values. Because such people are only familiar with the current styles and have just heard a few songs of MSV, might believe that MSV stuck to repeat interludes. It is both unfounded and ill-conceived. Also, a common belief is that what is 'marketed' to-day is the latest. Any 'latest' is just a repeat of the past. If honourably agreeing to this line of explanation is difficult, kindly consider this and verify the same with your parents and grand parents. All those dress designs for pants, shirts for men and Churidhars and blouses for women including the current short sleeve jackets of women are just reappearances. If one watches the old movies of early 1950s it would be menacingly clear that SHORT SLEEVE WAS THE THEN STYLE. SAME IS THE CASE WITH EVERY OTHER 'INNOVATION'. At best these are innovations to the extent of being brought again to break the prevailing monotony. Abundant evidence can be thrown to show that MSV has been an innovator par excellence and as such does not need any one's endorsement. People start concluding with what they 'think' they know.
It is better to ignore such shallow / ill conceived notions.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Ram, Balaji, Venky, Ramki, Ravikumar,
It's been a long silence only from the site but my heart is full of Our Master's beats only! Venky, than k you for taking me on a short nostalgic trip. Great write up on the piano. I just have one point to make - THOSE WHO LISTEN TO OUR MASTER'S MUSIC CAN NEVER LISTEN / DIGEST OTHER'S MUSIC. THOSE WHO LISTEN TO OTHERS CAN NEVER UNDERSTAND MSV'S MELODIES. As Prof. Raman said even for comparison one needs to have a class and when that class is amiss why compare at all??? Just indulge yourself (as Vinatha says it always) totally and drown yourself in absolute melodies of MSV . Cha, enna oru veri ayya enakku????
CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC
