Interesting news from the above site. Director Bhimsingh never interfered in song composing and he agreed and said UNGALAKKU PIDITHAL ENNAKU PIDITHA MATHIRI.

We all know about PA series songs.

Hi! Ms Sharada,

Beautiful! You have evoked memories of yesteryears related to the great maestro pair Kaviarasu Kannadhasan and M.S. Visvanathan. Please do share whatever you know about the birth of songs especially those relating to the works of this great pair. They were God's gift to the Tamil cine world and their works should be religiously recorded for the future generation.

Whilst at that may I add something which may sound like an about turn to the 'Sonnathu nee thaana' song writing incident?

The song composing work was all set for the film 'Peria Idathu Penn'. Surprisingly, Kaviarasar Kannadhasan was an early bird with MGR, the film's hero sitting beside him. But the central figure, our MSV, had still not turned up. MGR requested that someone telephone MSV's house and Kannadhasan volunteered. MSV's wife came on the line and told Kannadhasan that MSV is still asleep.

Kannadhasan narrated this to MGR and TV Ramana, the director. Deciding not to waste time it was proposed that Kannadhasan goes ahead to pen the song. Well, wihout MSV's presence it was indeed a tough job for Kannadhasan. After hearing the scene's situation from Ramana, he wrote the song 'Avanukenna thoongivittaan, agapattavan naan allava"!

For the record 'Nenjil Oor Aalayam' was released earlier than 'Peria Idathu Penn'. Well, was it a case of tit for tat?!

Dear Mahendra Raj...., welcome...

Yes, as you said Kavinger Kannadasan mostly use the situations to start his song lines. He will reflect his thoughts in that song. One of the ezamples I give here............

(Interludes are fully with violins and Shenoy)

Same like this, once when he was producing his own movie "Karuppu panam", he was badly in need of money and approached his brother A.L.Srinivasan. (KD already got more money from ALS for this movie). This time ALS refused to give. At that time he has to write a song for the movie 'PALANI' (with Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy) Bearing this situation with his brother ALS, Kannadasan wrote the song

"annan ennada thambi ennada
avasaramaana ulagathilE
aasai koLvathil arththam ennada
kaasaillaathavan kudumbathilE
"

Thanks Balaji, Sharada & Ram,

I have been watching this site from the day it was launched but unfortunately I was unable to join earlier. Perhaps I wanted to gauge the site first and only recently did I seriously give a thought to contribute.

MSV narrated the incidence of 'Annan ennada' in Ananda Vikatan in 1993 when he was writing for a few weeks. According to him, when they (MSV,TKR & Kannadhasan) sat to compose for 'Pazhani' a studio hand brought an imported scotch. Seeing this their mood shifted and enthusiastically inquired from the boy as to the price of the scotch. The boy quoted Rs1500. An on the spot collection was made but it fell short of Rs500. MSV suggested that Kannadhasan request an advance payment for this particular situation song from his brother, AL Sreenivasan, the producer of this film. Kannadhasan did just that by dialling ALS. When ALS asked him the raison de' etre for the urgency, Kannadhasan as usual told him the truth. ALS gave him a tongue lashing over the telephone for being a wastrel. So the scotch session did'nt materialise but that did'nt deter Kannadhasan from venting his frustration through this song. For the record the entire team took the disappointment sportingly, so said MSV.

Well, the song scene came out well for the film but can anyone guess the real reason for this gem of a song?! If I am not mistaken during the heydays of Vairamuthu there was a controversy which I remember reading. It seemed Vairamuthu was sick of people comparing him with Kannadhasan especially when he purportedly reigned himself as the 'kaviarasar' after Kannadhasan and to justify his works (Vairamuthu's) he said that he is a tee-totaler and all his works are done soberly. He also made a light reference to the 'Pazhani' song incidence saying that he does not stoop that low for the sake of alcohol. The family of Kannadhasan including his numerous fans took offence to this statement. I can't remember the conclusion but I did read alot of angry repurcussions against Vairamuthu.

I will try and recollect other incidences and post here from time to time.

By the way Sharadaji, your narration of 'Visvanathan velai vendum' was exhaustive. I was given to understand that at that particular time Kannadhasan was idling with plenty of time in his hands. He cajoled MSV to give him some work lest his mind becomes a devil's workshop. Please write some more and share with us.

With warm regards,

R. Mahendra Raj

Dear Saradha

Wonderful writing, as usual.

I was all along wondering how MSV made TMS sing in 'Jaladhosham'
voice in the song. Actually I was thinking this was done because of time pressure.

Your 'Padal piranda kathai' gave me clarity. What a commitment of the entire time - Bhimsingh, MSV, Kannadasan and ofcourse TMS.

I really liked your narration - MSV telling TMS not to sneeze in between the recording and Bhimsingh response to that - Hats off to the team
and ofcourse to your writing too !

By the by, no feedback from you on my writing on 'THULLIYODUM KAALGAL ENGE' , one of the many not-much-heard songs of MSV, posted in a separate page ?

Pl write your feedback and your own comments on the song !

Regards
Ramki

DEAR ALL,

"GHOST SONGS" ARE A DISTINCT GENRE IN INDIAN FILM MUSIC.THE

SONGS OF THIS CATEGORY ALWAYS TURN OUT MUSICALLY VERY POWERFUL
AND WITH A LOT OF FEEL.IN OLD HINDI NUMBERS IN THE FILMS LIKE "BEES SAAL BAAD" AND "WOH KAUN THEE' BY LATA WERE LINGERING MELODIES AND MD"S INVARIABLY CHOSE "MISRA SIVARANJANI" FOR THESE NUMBERS.

I FEEL MAJORITY OF THESE IN TFM ARE DONE BY THE MASTER ONLY.A NOTABLE DISTINCTION.WE SHOULD START A THREAD TO LIST ALL SUCH SONGS AND DISCUSS.
MY WRITING THIS POST IN THIS THREAD IS FOR A REASON. WHO ELSE OTHER THAN SAARADA MADAM CAN THROW THE (EN)LIGHT ON THIS ?

MADAM,
EXPECTING YOUR WRITING ON THIS.WILL YOU?
