KAADHALIKKA NERAMILLAI - IV
Dear friends,
What made K N a unique product, was its dialogue that signifies simplicity, spontaneity and alertness. All movies reach the masses through the dialogue but KN HAS DIALOGUES THAT ARE PENETRATIVE . To be able to keep track of "on-screen' happenings , the audience have to stay in rapt attention , lest should lose some other boisterous occasion. In fact even in non-Tamil regions like Mysore , the audience used to burst into laughter- uncontrollable laughter. It made them visit the theatre again eagerly awaiting to pick up what was missed earlier. NONE EVER FELT BAD OF SEEING THE MOVIE AGAIN AND AGAIN. More visits meant greater entertainment, as on every occasion one would notice something that escaped notice earlier. This was one of the major reasons for the movie being watched dozens of times. Statistically people of single-viewer-ship for this movie are a microscopic minority. People took delight in repeat viewing.
This is a solid evidence to show that the approach was thoroughly refreshing even on th "n"th time. Apart from the beauty of the utterances, their timing, punctuation and verbal embellishments everything had a natural flavour making the whole movie absolutely acceptable.
Look at these:
"AsogaR Unga MagaRa " an utterance of Baliah became legendary as it effortlessly revealed the sycophancy attempted by him on the rich Muthuraman.
"Beach road la 6 maadi kattidam irikkay adhu yaardhu? -Muthuraman
"Ayyayyo adhu ennudhu illeenga" -- Baliah.

Another instance:
"Appa Yanai eppadi irukkumnu en magan kaettaan. Udanay oru 3000 ROOPAIYA KUDUTHTHU ORU YAANAIYAI VANGIKITTU VANDHU , IDHUDHANDA MAGANAY YAANAI NU kAMICHAEN"- Muthuraman
Shocked Balaiah lamenting with in outwardly appreciates thus
"ARASA PARAMBARA, ARASA PARAMBARA"
When Muthuraman narrates to impress that he is a very big aristocrat, saying " En magan kaNama ponadhila business la enakku [Balaiah interjects in grammatic Tamil PUTHTHIRA SOAGAM YAARAI VITTADHU?]
50 LATCHA ROOPA Nashtam. Huha huha huhha ha " Muthuraman.
Balaiah facially displays anguish on the loss suffered by a third person like Muthuraman and regrets "Ennanga SirikkireengaLay, naana irundha, vizundhu setthu illa poyiruppaen". These are just some samples of how the 2 interact and reveal their status / inclinations to wealth.

All those moments when Nagesh arranges to get the movie agreement signed between Oho productions and Sachu were comedy at one's own expense in the sense it had a dig at the behaviour of artistes.
Also when Sachu says"Sir I want to serve the Art world, Nagesh retorts, 'DON'T SAY IT NOW, KEEP IT IN MIND when I come back [Bankrupt] to you for my next movie". Although comically said it carried a lot of truth on the plight of movie-making. There are innumerable punches that pervade the movie and the visual impact can not be successfully conveyed by writing.
One of the best examples of the kind is the story-telling sequence between Balaiah and Nagesh infusing horror in to the mind of Balaiah. The effect is brilliantly portrayed by the progressively increasing sweating of Balaiah who desperately tries to avoid listening to the narration by Nagesh. But , Nagesh keeping a tight proximity to Balaiah naggingly disturbs him by adding greater horror by launching unworldly sounds. Very many in the audience could not follow the verbal transaction, but went by Nagesh-Balaiah responses. All media then asked for the dialogues to CVS and others including the actors. The reply was "Please again see the movie". It is said that Gopu advised Nagesh and Balaiah to folow the same method adopted by Director DADA MIRAZI for briefing the artistes.
A couple movies that imitated the trick miserably failed,.At this point, I wish to recall one item in appreciation of Vincent- Sundaram .As Nagesh begins with a howl ooooooOOOO Gummiruttu, the lighting quickly drops to low visibility enhancing the horror effect. The same has been done in a song sequence which I shall take-up later. Others please add. [TO CONTINUE]
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman MADURAI.

Just a simple example of how Chitralaya have converted even Balaiya’s frustration into comedy !
Balaiya will be fuming and fretting but Nagesh will utter his part very casually !!

Another scene, Balaiya suddenly will be courteous towards his son :

இது உடம்பா இது செல்லப்பா
By saying this, he touches the shirt
இது சட்டப்பா Laughing

When Balaiya takes Chidambaram to his guest house, he sees Nagesh doing rehearsals with his music composer…

Nagesh introduces :

இவர் தான் க்ரிஷ்ணகிரி கிட்டப்பா
and immediately turning towards Balaiya
இவர் எங்கப்பா…. ப்ரொடுயூசர்

Nagesh possesses extrordinary timing sense !

Dear Mr.Balaji,
Thank you for referring to some important scenes of comic exchanges. But, the exact dialogues were slightly different.

Balaaiah: Unnai naan maganaa peththadhukku en buddhiyai Jottalae adikkanum.
Nagesh; Theriyama dhaan kaekkaraen, ungaLukku magana porandhadhukku en buddhiyai edhala adichukkaradhu?
B : Naan adicha seruppai keezhae podaraen adhai eduththu Nee adichukko

N : Seruppadi patta kudumbam nu oorae paesum paa.

As Muthuraman and Ravichandran enter the get house [Balaiah's reference to guest house] Musical note is being played. The MD is introduced to them as Krishnagiri Kittappa [none other than Shankar [Ganesh] ]. Nagesh makes it appear that Krishnagiri Kittappa is referred to as his "Appa' though actually he shows his appa to K Kittappa.
At this point Muthuraman exercises a tone showing his aristocracy "NangaLum indha Koottathoda thaan thangaNuma? A shaken Balaiah quickly restores balance saying "Ayyayyo Adhellam illenga, Ippavae ivangaLai virratidaraen" and orders them out. The MD walks out saying "App a nanga varomunga" to which Balaiah restricts saying "Varadhay poikkittae iru" Thus every moment every artiste launches unabated wit and humour. My narration is only to bring the idea that dialogues were extremely sophisticated and timely. Thank you
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Professor

Thank you for the exact wordings. continuing the same guest house entry scene, when Balaiya hears the rehearsal especially the tabla sound, he will involuntarily dance for a second Laughing

Another scene which Sachu's Father innocently gives his share of comedy:

Nagesh :
எங்கப்பா எதிற்க கால் மேல கால் போட்டு உட்கார வைக்கிறேன்

Sachu's Father :
வேண்டாம் தம்பி ..அது மரியாதையா இருக்காது !!!

See, this might look an ordinary dialogue but just pure innocent comedy actually Very Happy

The shot that introduces Nagesh first shows the portrait of Jerry Lewis . Is Nagesh inspired by Jerry ? My Father always used to mention this !

One thing. Chitralaya Gopu was the greatest asset to Mr. Sridhar. This association lasted very long thanks to the wonderful understanding they had. I heard they were class mates and Sridhar only pulled him into filmdom .

Dear Mr. Balaji,
Your two information pieces are correct.
1. Nagesh drew his inspiration from Jerry Lewis, but was more adept in handling subtle emotions than J L.
2. As for TA SATAGOPAN [GOPU], it was CVS who pulled him into cine line. They were both class mates with total understanding and absolute faith. They hail from Chengal pattu area and in many movies of CVS Gopu used to be a part of a wedding crowd, [Some sentiment that Gopu should be shown ]In Galaatta KalyaaNam in the last song ENGAL KALYAANAM , IN THE LAST frame of the song Gopu walks behind the car in a small group with the free edge of his dhothie wobbling in air.
Really Gopu was an asset to CVS and CVS kept him in high esteem and status and had given him the freedom work for any other banner. The two symbolize true friendship. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
Warn regards Prof.K,Raman Madurai.

Hi,

The diaglogues of KN are remembered even now and many thanks to the audio cassette that was released in the 80s. When you remember the dialogues and the facial expressions of Nagesh and Baliah, who once again led the laugh riot in Ooty Varai Uravu, one cannot but smile even when you are not alone.

One other scene I can point out is the one where both are waiting outside Viswanathan's (Muthu) Get house!

Baliah, who is shocked to see Nagesh waiting outside before his own arrival, asks "Nee engada inga vande".

"Aen neenga mattum thaan varalama? Naan varakkudada".

"Unnai Pethen Paaru En Budhiyai Seruppal Adikkanum, Seruppal Adikkanum".

"Ungallukku maganai pirandene en buddhiyai edhal adikkanum, illai kaekkiren"

"Naan adicha seruppai vangi adichukko"

"Seruppal adi patta kumumbamnu ulagame thoothumpa".

Here when you watch this scene in the theatre you are able to listen only upto "naan adicha" as the entire audience roar. The last line uttered by Naagesh, which is the punchline, is lost!

And in the same scene Nagesh asks Baliah "Neenga Thane Sonneenga Viswanathan naalu kappalai pocketil vachirukkirarunnu".

Amam Sonnen, ippavum solren avar naalu kappali picketla vachirakkarunnu - Baliah

"Antha manushanai summa vidalama" - Nagesh

"Aen Enna Panna Poriyam" - Baliah

"Avargitta poi, oru naalu thadavai modhi" - Nagesh

"Enna Modha poriya?" - Baliah

"En padathin ulaga urimayai avar perla vangividuven. Piragu ennai paarkanumna neenga ippadithan velila ukkararanum" - Nagesh

At this stage Ravichandran comes out of the room and Baliah tells Nagesh who is in a hurry to enter the room "Amukkava, aenda parakkirae" and then tells Ravi "Thambi naan than mudalil vanden".

Ravi says "Mr Oho Productions"

"Appa neenga ponga" - Nagesh

Ravi tells Nagesh "Neenga naalu manikku vaanga".

The fact that people still remember these dialogues after nearly half a century shows how effective they were and remain till date.
