_________________ Saradha Prakash |

_________________ Saradha Prakash |

Dear Sharadha,
Aha! Enna oru topic, ithanai naatkalaga yengikkondirundha enakku! Sreedhar is my most favourite director and his movies are very unique and very strong in conveying messages. In my opinion this era of Sreedhar in TFW must be etched in golden letters!!! He was probably the only gutsy director who took up challenging tasks and one was the immemorable "Nenjam Marapathillai". Also the combination of MSV & Sreedhar, just unbelievable and absolutely unbeatable. Sreedhar's niece was my school mate and am still in touch with her. During my recent talk with her, I came to know that he has been ailing for a long time. I would like to request all members of our forum to Pray for his well being. TFW will never forget his contributions and his creations. Long live Sreedhar and his immortal works!!!
Cheers

Dear friends
Sridar has held the industry mesmerised for years by his trend setting themes and approach. He has been perhaps the youngest to handle responsible portfolio of Story-Dialogue writing [19 yrs] and film direction at 21. Certainly he cast a spell over the audience by resorting to apt strategies. He not only cut short dialogues in his movies, but also downsized any undue importance to star value. As a FD he made people realize that the technicians and FD are indded the key elements in a movie and not the persons appearing on the celluloid. From Kalyaana Parisu on, he has churned high quality, low budget, silverjubilee box office hits, Kalyana Parisu, Nenjil ore aalayam, Nenjam marappadhillai, Sumai thangi, Policekaaran magal, Thane nilavu, Kadhalikka neramillai, OOty varai uravu, Vennira aadai, Avalukkenru oru manam, Nenjirukkum varai most of these were lowbudget products but achieved stardom for the artistes. He absolved himself of the need to pamper the actors through dialogues by avoiding wellknown stars in his movies. He created a niche for his style of functioning. His highbudget movie was Sivandha mann shot in Paris &Switzerland- afirst of its kind in TF. Hewas the first ever TFD to have exercised telling camera angles to captivate the attention of viewers in a visual medium. He has had the distinction of according top-priority to songs by placement and picturisation. MSV has had the occasions to show his calibrein CVS movies with no star value. All the songs and movies are immortal. Hewas also the lone director to have given importance to technicians by prominently announcing their names on posters. Only later other banners adopted this culture. Truly CVS was a magnificent pioneer of TF industry. More of it can be discussed in the days ahead for our youngsters to realize technology has not contributed to mental quality.

While watching the song "Sonnathu Nee Thaana" from "Nenjil Or Aalayam" again, please see it carefully to notice a scene where the camera is handled with international standards.
Camera will show Devika in a close-up shot; then go up and move backwards well behind the bed where Muthuraman is seated; cover both Muthuraman and Devika from that angle and then suddenly low down below the bed; move forwards underneath the bed towards Devika; and then astonishingly come up again as a top angle. All in a same continuity shot. ASTONISHING!!! I believe the camera is by A.Vincent. Such a brilliant handling of camera for a pathos song by Sridhar. True that he is a class director, by all means.

Dear Mr Sankar
Glad to note that you have touched upon a very sensible and sensitive topic- Camera angle in Nenjil ore aalayam. Quite a few cinematographers have been awe-inspired by the camera angles for this song in something like an 8x8 room. Actually as per PN Sundaram's narration, at least two cameras were run [at tandem?] and brilliantly edited to give the feel of continuity. Incidentally PNS was the first assistant of A.Vincent-- the aasthana cinematographer of CV Sridar till 1964, Kadhalikka neramillai being their last work as a team. Now on to the continuity in shots. What is absolutely important for visual continuity is, setting the perfect light values for different shots done by independent cameras. Time and again I have been pinpointing to the younger generation that technology without technique serves no end. For all I know, Vincent was among the best then in these skills, especially for linking shots indoors to outdoors and vice-versa. To be honest, all works of Vincent were fresh and captivating for clarity, aesthetic angles and unobtrusive presentation. Above all, he was capable of translating concept into a reality. Quite a number of situations can be recalled from various movies done by Vincent-Sundaram [as a pairof cinematographers] as evidence of artistic wizardy of these people. Like MSV, Vincent has the fine sense of merging shots through conducive lighting. More of it later.

when it comes to sridhar immly my mind goes to avulakkendru ore manam where gemini outside the swimming pool looks at bharathi thru his sun galsses and the same is shown to us plus the swimming pool effect where we feel that we have gone in to the water to look at the inside of the pool
what a picturisation and what a creativity . by the way who did the photography -- |

The Director of Cinematography for the Sreedhar's movie "Avalukendru Ore Manam" was U.Rajagopal. (I hope he done with Sreedhar for 'Vaira Nenjam' also). I also enjoyed the shot, you mentioned. But it is the creativity of the director. |

Dear Irene,
I thank you for the thread on the swimming pool shot in Avalukkenru oru manam. Well , it was almost a patented shot in most Sridhar movies. The picturesque effect was originally done in Nenjil ore aalayam depicting a live character and a mirror image of Devika and Muthuraman. It was expanded as a person and an image in that scintilating song Anubhavam pudhumai in Kaadhalikka neramillai. Aso, Muthuraman in the rear view mirror and Kanchana as live image in the same movie for the song Enna paarvai undhan paarvai .[A.Vincent- PNSundaram -WORK] A further expansion of this technique was seen in Vennira aadai for the song Nee enbadhenna , where a live being , a mirror image and a larger than life shadow were brought out as any two pairs in quick sequence [G.Balakrishna and N.Balakrishnan -cinematography]. Whoever started this presentation, it was well availed of as a technique to enhance the viewing pleasure. So, once again technique can not be side-lined by technology.
Warm regards Prof. K.Raman Navi Mumbai _________________ Prof. K. Raman
