Dear Friends ,
I am still in the process of viewing N V movie, because I look at it in a critical way , as it has lot of 'surprises' that have escaped my [perhaps many others as well ] notice earlier in 1966. Therefore complete analysis would demand more time. Yet it is not wrong to make a beginning in the format of a prelude. At this distant 2008, the story looks quite heavy with a sequence of happenings that are quite common. Best part of the movie does not suffer from cinematic syndromes of lavish costume, cosmetics and dialogues that are verbose / explosive, triggering off emotional surcharges even on the viewers. So, what happens is an absolutely sedate drama that runs its natural course while precisely 'touching' the viewer in the most casual but powerful way WITH JUST NO DIGRESSION WHAT SO EVER. One of the surprises .not much spoken of from this movie is the fantastic complementary roles by Cinematographer and the MD. Normally MDs tow the line of Director. But in this movie, there is a real race between the camera and the orchestra - the 2 elements that portray everything except themselves. So to say N.Balakrishnan and MSViswanathan throw us into jolts though they do not try to overshadow each other, besides honouring all requirements of CVS. Now it unfurls as to why CVS avoided the cosmetic brush up for even mega stars Sivaji Ganesan and KR Vijaya and all others. Best part of the story is presented to establish total honesty in financial poverty . Even torn off costumes adore the hero and heroine. In a movie, these are just peripherals and the core pertains to the "content". Well there is enough of it , involving human relations that twine themselves up from the sheer ambience and the inevitable component of coexistence. Strictly, every artiste has lived the character in this coexistence of fighting for the essential minimum. What is admirable about the very movie is the treatment of the subject by CVS. Portrayal of poverty has been done without infringing on human dignity. Too often movie Directors make the mistake of highlighting poverty by making the characters share a platform with street dogs and spit vituperation against the seemingly affluent. None of those cheap gimmicks have been availed of ; prima facie the very approach lends respectable credence to the suggestion that all male characters are victims of unemployment / under-employment though they are sufficiently educated. Visually the narration is superb and needless to say that CVS has really done a marvellous homework in screen play. One more 'ahead of its times" kind of movie from CVS sustaining his stamp of supremacy in all technical components though it was just a B&W movie.
Please wait for my approsal on what makes this a unique movie.

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.
