Hi Friends,
This is a lovely topic. Some more golden numbers of the Master that come to my mind, where the chorus is composed superbly, are:
1. Kangalukkenna Kaavalillayo (Nil Gavani Kaadhali)
2. Satti Suttadhada Kai Vittadhada (Aalayamani)
3. Madhura Nagaril Thamizh Sangam (Paar Magaley Paar)
4. Sindhu Nadhiyin Misai Nilaviniley (Kai Kodutha Deivam)
5. Adho Andha Paravai Pola (Aayirathil Oruvan)
6. Mannavaney Azhalama (Karpagam)
7. Vanakkam Palamurai Sonnen (Avan Oru Sarithiram)
8. Ellorum Nalam Vaazha Naan Paaduven (Enga Mama)
9. Oruvaar Vaazhum Aalayam (Nenjil Oor Aalayam)
10.Malargalai Pol Thangai - Sorrow Version (Paasa Malar)
Regards,

Dear friends,
There seem to be many songs from MM on the various distinct types of chorus that all of us have been discussing so far. The point is that many of these songs have been either unknown for this aspect, or have been those that many of us failed to register that it has been a unique experiment by MM! While differentiating them into choir type, swara-based (tham thana...) and simpler type (sindhu nadiyin misai...), I am greatly 'affected' by the first type. The basic reason being that this is the type which other music directors have not handled prior to him, or only vaguely emulated him afterwards (like Shanker-Ganesh or KVM). This IS an original idea of MM as far as movie songs are concerned. Of course, the second type is a novelty borrowed by others later, only to be claimed as theirs(?!!). The third type is a chorus necessitated by the situation of the song, a simpler type, nevertheless, brilliantly used by him. This was very natural to MM.
On the other day, I was suddenly struck by the less known song "Romeo-Juliet, indroru vaanam" (an MGR film, I guess?). Suddenly the choir enters and vanishes making one feel lilted by its subtlety.
This has always amazed, thrilled and mesmerized me...What a genius!!

Friends,
I just forgot to add another dimension to this idea...We would have surely noticed other music directors in the Hindi film industry handling this choir type chorus. The one that stands out (or the only one that comes to my mind) is the great Salil Chowdhury. What I suspect is that the style that he employed in a few movies seem that of MSV's! A song that is reminiscent of "kann pona pokkile" might be as well a remake of that movie/reproduction of the song itself! I am forgetting this song. This song appears both in a male voice as well as Lata's. Maybe Professor can throw some light on this.

Dear Sri Sai Saravanan,
Your analysis of MM in novel dimensions is simply great! As you said MM is the first to bring this choir type in the Tamil film music. But the specialist in choir type was Mr. M.B. Srinivasan, who has brought many songs with choir in Malayalam cinema. In Tamil some of his notable films were Padhai Theriyudhu Par, Pudhu Vellam, Madhana Maligai (that beautiful song by Yesudas and Susila, Yeriyile or Kashmir Roja). I do not exactly remember th malayalam songs but heard many songs by him in vivid barathi between 4.30 and 5.30 pm in the seventies.

Dear Ragavendran Sir,
Your reference to MBS is appropriate. Only that (it sort of) got diluted by his regular handling of chorus for group singing activities. His contribution possibly cannot reach the dimensions or magnitude of MM, simply comparing only the range used by our MM, the situations, and for varied types of emotions! The brilliance of MBS probably got restricted to traditional carnatic style, unfortunately.
Thanks!

Dear friends,
Just rekindled an earlier topic due to our MM's indirect mention on this aspect... It was on the Kann pona pokkiley song being discussed in Endrum MSV, when MM mentioned that the starins of this song was akin to some Russian ballet kind of music, with chorus added to enhance the effect (to transport all of us mortals to heaven!!). He is humble, as usual, when he says he found some similarity with this so-called Russian music. But, being the Creator of Music himself, we all can understand where the 'source' is...obviously in MM himself! Right?

Dear friends,
In the recent episode of Endrum MSV, there was a mention on the choir type of chorus handled by our MM. The host was praising him profusely, but our master smilingly acknowledged and, as his wont, attributed the importance only to the words and the lyrics of any song, much more than the music part. This, of course, is true, but then his composing style and the life he infuses into any song is more important, and he always is very humble to avoid such references.

Friends,
In the recent episode of Endrum MSV, MM mentioned that one of his very initial roles also was as a singer in the chorus team. Was this for Subbaraman or SMS? Any idea?

Dear friends,
Another song/chorus style, with a beautiful chorus style, not properly listed by me earlier: I was, by a strange chance, listening to some old songs of LRE. Did not know many of them, anyway. Suddenly, there was this song, 'Varavendum'. Probably, from the film Kalaikoil. I am not very sure of the film title. But, this style of male bass chorus voices softly accompanying the song, was initiated by MM during this period, I suppose. A louder version to this was in 'Viswanathan velai vendum'. The chorus here is very controlled and punctuate the song so seamlessly well. The song, of course, is amazing for its brass section, piano, etc. It is a unique and experimental song by our MM. Especially, this type of chorus singing was also introduced in Tamil films by him. Amazing background score and voice accompaniments!!

Dear Sai Saravanan,
As regards your question, on MM's earlier life as a chorus singer, he was not confined to onw MD. Making a living is a priority for a corus singer and so they try to avail of chances as they come by. An interesting piece to recall here is a part of the conversation between MSV and SS Vasan of Gemini. When SSV was negotiating with MSV for the movie 'vAzhkkai padagu", SSV expressed a doubt 'I have seen you somewhere'. The ever polite MSV responded "Yes Sir, you could have, I used be a chorus singer in your recording studios". His culture continues as he readily obliges any MD -big or small whenever asked to sing a song. Truly he has been a cementing force among ALL GENERATIONS OF MDs in TF Industry.
Thanks for the opportunity.

Dear friends,
Recently, I was hearing the song "Mutthuppal siripennavo mullai poo virippennavo" by TMS and PS. A breezy song, effortlessly progressing with quick scenes and beautiful singing. But, the highlight appears to be the chorus that slowly and suddenly appears, and adds a softness to the song. It really has a magic about the chorus. MM has introduced a string of modulated voices in between similar to the chorus number of TMS/PS in Rickshawkaaran. Really do not know how this was important, but having got used to hearing this song with these voices, it sounds heavenly. Lovely chorus!!

Friends,
I recently was listening to some collection of TMS songs for MGR. The song 'Naalu perukku nandri' probably has a sudden insertion of this chorus-choir type- and vanishes in a flash. Of course, this aptly adds to the sadness of the song so appropriately that I got dragged into it. In this process, I forgot to verify if the song was this or some other(!). An interesting usage in this song by MM indeed.
