Dear Friends,

Today is the death anniversary of the one and only “நடிகர் திலகம்”. Hence, I decided to come out with this article on this day in remembrance of the great artiste, of whom I am also a big fan.

It is a well accepted fact that Sivaji Ganesan is perhaps the best actor of our times. I am sure every one will agree that what MSV is to Light Music, is Sivaji to Acting. There can be no second thoughts about it. MSV has the unique distinction of scoring music for more than 40% of Sivaji movies.

But the fact is Sivaji’s task of coming out with special performance for many of the intriguing songs was instigated by MSV, by His visualizing how Sivaji will act/react to such a lyric/song-situation in the respective movies. May be that’s a reason for MSV turning out to be an actor later on, giving good performances in some of the Films and TV Serials. Of course, there was another actor in the form of TMS who rendered such expressive singing – perhaps MSV was the Master in bringing out the best from TMS – which further contributed to the value of such songs and made them huge hits.

I am listing below 20 special numbers as examples to augment the above factor:

In all these songs, one felt that it is Sivaji who himself has sung and not TMS. Especially, nobody realized that the voice for dialogues in some of these songs, like
“ஆயிரம் இருந்தூம் வசதிகள் இருந்தூம் no peace of mind”,
and the dialogues in ”சக்க ேபாடு ேபாடு ராஜா “,
was that of TMS and not Sivaji. All credit to TMS for this splendid work. But the Man behind all this success was none other than our Master, who apart from His “The Ultimate” status in Light Music, had the skills to get in to Sivaji’s shoes and compose songs for “The Actor” in the best possible and most fitting manner.

This is not to take away any credit whatsoever from the great Sivaji, but only to highlight the acting side of our Master, which I am sure every one will appreciate.

With best regards,

Venu Soundar,
Mumbai
