Hi Friends,

As you all know, “SARANGI” is an instrument which has been very rarely used in Film Music (not only Tamil, but even in Hindi and probably other languages too). I wonder if at all any one has used this instrument, except our great MSV. Our Master has used this rare instrument so beautifully, efficiently and effectively in many songs. As we all know, He masterfully used it in songs of “Karnan”, best of which was “ULLathil Nalla ULLam”.

Apart from “Karnan”, MSV has wonderfully used Sarangi in the following numbers:

01. Anbu Manam Kaninda Pinney (AaLukkoru Veedu)
02. Athai Maganey Poi Vara Vaa (Paadha KaaNikkai)
03. Yaar Andha Nilavu (Shanthi)
04. Manidhan Enbavan (Sumai Thaangi)
05. Thoodhu Sella Oru Thozhi (Pachai ViLakku)
06. Udalukku Uyir KAval (MaNap Pandhal)
07. Silar Sirippar Silar Azhuvar (Paava Mannippu)
08. Otrumayay Vaazhvadhaley (Baagap Pirivinai)
09. Oru NaaL Iravil (Panathottam)
10. Naan Kavignanumillai (Padithal Mattum Podhuma)
11. Ulagin Mudhal Isai Thamizh Isaiye (Thavap Pudhalvan)

I am sure there are many more numbers where the Legend has used Sarangi. The above readily came to my mind. Others are welcome to add to the list.

As we know, Sarangi is best suited for “pathos” numbers. But no one will even think of using this instrument for songs like “Anbu Manam Kanindha Pinney”, “Thoodhu Sella Oru Thozhi” & “Athai Maganey”. This is possible by the one and only MSV. What a composer and what great compositions!! No words will be enough to praise the Master’s magical work. He is really Divine.

Mr Raghavendran, so nice of you in providing links to various golden hits of our Master. Please try if you can provide links to the above mentioned songs too.

Long Live MSV and His mesmerizing Music.

Regards,

Venu Soundar

Dear friends,
Another beautiful instrument like the shehnai, again in the hands of MM! This was an inseparable part of the erstwhile dancing houses in the north, alongwith the tabla. This instrument could not get its due to this association as well as the difficulty involved in playing this. This vanished slowly from the scene alongwith the associated culture during the English rule. Very few are known to practice this instrument today. It was earlier used in the Hindi movies, not very frequently, but rarely as demanded by the story. It was revived by greats like Naushad and Khaiyyam when they brought the ghazal alive in movies. It got adapted in a few more hands, probably like O.P.Nayyar, mixed with Punjabi folk. Our MM also used it exactly in such situations, as it was commonly known to be used. But then the genius in him took it to uncommon areas, and not only ghazal-like TFM songs ("udalukku uyir kaaval") that he composed, but for many other occasions in songs as varied as what Mr.Venu has listed. What an imagination to employ this instrument for unbelievable situations! As always, only God knows how he composed! And how has he used it! This is nothing but sheer poetry in music!
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan
