Dear Mr.Ram,
As you have exclaimed "innum enna enna vidayilla puthirgalai...", the answer seems to be only known to "Paraaparamey"!! His music is verily an ocean, unknown of its depth and the hidden secrets that it contains. He is an ocean himself!

Dear Ram
A straight 'sixer' after a long 'Agnyathavaasam' !!
A great writing !
The title of your article says 'Journey', and I am reading it as your Journey of continuous writing ! Meaning it is your next innings.
Pl continue this innings - a short break for drinks is allowed in between, but definitely not long silences.
All the best
Dad. _________________ isaiyin innoru peyar thaan emmessvee. |

Dear Mr Ram,
As said by your dad , let it be a long innings of class.
While concurring on its 'Endless' pursuit, I cannot reconcile to its being 'Aimless'. Instead, it could be
'Aims -undisclosed and End -unknown'.
Attempts can never be aimless- isn't it?
At best they are free of shackles in defining the Aim.
Please plunge us into the ocean of bliss.
I see a temptation for another book, though with some other Editor.
Please consider the prospect for another style of Publication.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman MADURAI. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Mr. Ram,
Thank you for your explaining the conceptual base of the series 'to be'. I never meant to misunderstand the spirit of your mission. All I intended was to indicate the mission as an integral element in the very title. Nothing more. All said and done, the author is the best judge of personal emotions and faith. 'Outsiders' cannot grasp the spirit until the whole piece is gone through. If I had hastily made a suggestion, please drop it as from an enthusistic novice; but please go ahead with your analysis. My congratulations in advance.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Ram,
Welcome to the technical zone. Well I had been in this sort of quest for the truth of his music for more than 3 decades. And my experience is very unique. Every time I feel I am close to finding a formula new facts gets revealed and the journey seem endless.
My best wishes to you.
Mean time I want to share my experience about his ability to give a unique flavor for a particular raga. My perception is that baring specific occasion which requires a classical style He never kept the raga in mind. This fact is very hard to reconcile for the pundits who feel it is not possible to create a melody without a raga to start with. People will start their endless journey in to the great ocean of MSV'S unique light music only when they reconcile this fact. Once they start their journey then it would be like an experience never felt so far. I am now at some point in the deep ocean looking terrified (bhayam kalandha aanandham). But the journey continues.
After hearing the song 'Mahrajan Ulagai Aaalalaam' for many years only about a month back I realised a new fact. Most of us agree this song to be the raga 'Karaharapriya'. The fundamental tone or shruthi of the raga is panchama shruthi and not madyama shruthi. But decode this song in terms of note when you will notice that almost in all phrases of pallavi, charnam and interludes you will find the landings at ma1, da2 and only at one occasion touches pa.
Play this in 'C' natural scale you will have to use the fundamental harmony by using the chords 'F' major and not 'C' minor. This is very unique. Try other 'KARHARAPRIYA' songs like 'I will sing for you' or 'Maadavi Pon mayilal'. You will notice the diffference.
This shows that he can even shake the very foundation of accepted practice of a raga bhavam. The reason is he ignores theory and express the situation in a musical way by visually sensing the emotions in the situation. This aspect which very unique to music composition and cannot be explained in writing or verbal explanation. This has be to felt.
You also compared him to 'Beethovon' and called him 'South Indian Beethovan'. But where is the 'other Indian Beethovon'?
In my opinion 'Beethovan' is more blessed. He did not face the 'Commerciality' restriction in his composition. Whereas in MSV''s case each of his songs unfortunately had to be approved by Directors/Actors. etc who new nothing about the uniqueness of his music.
Regards,

Great stuff Ram !!! Keep going !!! Interesting stuff !!!!
"Aimless" is the best place to be in for getting deeper into a completely instinct driven composer. MSV himself looks at a particular piece of lyric without an aim, though the aim otherwise is to set it to a tune, his looking at it is completely devoid of any pre-determined constructs or say, a scale, or a technique, is the crux of the process. By removing himself from the equation he ends up allowing the lyric to tell its tale, on how it would like to be presented as a tune. He is certainly not overpowering the lyric with his tune ideas !!! This state of the psyche is the secret to all his "spot" improvisations and unimaginable musical constructs placed atop ordinary poetic meters. |
