Another great composer

Known for his classical tunes

A veteran of more than 50 years with association in many languages

Forms an integral part of the glorious 60s and 70s when he also dominated along with Mellisai Mannargal

Some of his movies like .... Shankarabaranam, thiruvilayadal , thillana mohanambal etc are evergreen hits

Lets discuss about this great man who is also fondly called as Mama KVM by film circle ! Very Happy

Dear friends,
Of the so many movies that KVM has composed for
IDHAYA KAMALAM STANDS OUT. The movie was almost different for its songs from MAMA's stable. One could see the influence of MSV in KVM's songs particularly for the orchestration. In fact, KVM has given a variety of hits in this Ravichandran KRVijaya starrer.

ThoL Kandaen ThoLae kandaen - PBS
Unnai kkaanaadha kannum----- P S
Ennadhaan Ragasiyamo ----- P S
Melaththa mellaththattu ----- S J
Definitely these and other ones in this movie are fresh by every
assessment. Irequest our analysts to bring these to the table for study.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Yes. It's true. The songs "Thol Kanden" and "Nee pogum idamellam" definitely have the influence of MSV's style.

When we talk of K.V.Mahadevan, the films that immediately come to my mind are: Sankarabharanam, Thiruvilayadal, ThillanaMohanambal, Saraswathy Sabatham, thiruvarutchelvar, Kandan Karunai, Vietnam Veedu, Vanambadi, Vasantha malligai, Navarathiri, Uththaman and it goes on. Some great MGR songs like, Unnai arinthal, Aagattumda thambi raja, Odi Odi Uzhaikanum, Nenjam undu Nermai undu, Annamittakai nammai aakivittakai, songs from Mattukara velan, Adimaipen, most of the songs in MGR-Thevar films are also his good works.

One other good movie which was packed with hit songs. A combination of Shivaji-KV.Mahadaevan-K.S.Gobalakarishnan.
The film is an emotional "Pesum Dheivam". The film had some great compositions like, "Naan anuppuvathu Kaditham alla - Ullam", "Azhagu theivam mella mella adi yeduthu vaithatho", "Paththu maasam sumakavillai chelliah Naan pathiyamum irunthathundo sollaya", and the stunning "Noorandu kaalam vaazhga Noi Nodi Illamal Vazharga".

KV.Mahadevan has the credit of taking the Carnatic music to the common public with great ease. Common public not just enjoyed listening the songs like they normally do in Carnatic Kacheri, but they tried singing the songs like "Oru Naal Pothuma" "Paattum Naney" "Omkara" "Brocheva" and all. That's his success. He has given the songs in such a way that common men could try to sing and enjoy themselves.

In the Bharathanatyam songs of Tamil Film Music, we have plenty, right from songs in 40's and 50's where Padmini, Lalitha, Vyjyanthimala ruled. G.Ramanathan's many songs like "Kaathiruppan kamalakannan" and all, MSV's "Maathavi ponmayilal", "Vetkamai Irukkuthadi" from the film "Paar magaley Paar", and many others of MSV too, Illayaraaja"s songs from Salangai Oli, Ther kondu vanthathu yaar yenru solladi thozhi, Azhagu malar Aada, A.R.Rehman's "Sangamam". It runs into many Bharathanatyam songs in the history of Tamil Film Music. All are good. But according to me, the ultimate Bharatanatyam song is "Mannavan Vanthanadi" from Thiruvarutchelvar. It seems P.Susheela was very nervous while singing this song. Shivaji had personally come to the recording studio to encourage P.Susheela. And P.Susheela records that this song is the most difficult song she sang in her career.

Cool When people talk about KVM's music they talk as if he scored music only to some well-known bharathanatyam songs of yesteryears along with one or two songs from other movies. But he has to his credit some extraordinary melodies which are composed in the begining of 1980s. For example, who can forget a reverberating melody sung by SPB from a totally unknown movie called "Antha Ratthirikku Satchi Illai". The song goes like this "Ethir Paarthen Ilangiliye Kanaliye, Illamkatre En Varalai Theriyaliye". Interestingly the song was written by Vairamuthhu. One more instance would be the songs from "Ennippadigal" a Sivakumar-Shoba starrer with songs like "Poonthenil Kalanthu Pon Vandu Elundu". "Enunga Mappiley Enna Sirippu" and a magnificent philosophical song "Kannizhanda Pillaikku Theivam Thantha Darisanam".A Shankar-Roopa starrer called "Mouna Yutham" has a duet "Azaithal Varuval Kettal Tharuval Avalthane Manaivi".People who were in the habit of listening to Ceylon Radio would cherish such songs even now. One surprising fact is he along with Illayaraja,T.R.Pappa,Shankar-Ganesh composed music for a movie called "Kannil Theriyum Kathaikal". As Sharada madam pointed out, Pugalendhi is KVM's second self. One can never think of them as separate entities. As he concentrated more on Telugu movies from later 1970's we do not have many tamil songs set to tune by him after that period. Let us pay our respect sincerely to that Genius Mama./

Few songs of "Mama" KVM are really out of the world (leave alone his classical numbers)

- Malargal Nanainthana Paniaaley (I thought this was MSV's for a long time. Amazing Interludes)

Another number I like from Mama's comp is:

- Aandavan Ulagathin Mudhalaali (from Thozhilali)

Beautiful Number !!! Very Happy

Dear Friends,
KVM had other dimensions , besides a routine composer of TFM. He was the earlist MD to have made use of TMS in a variety of sitations. KVM should be credited for his find -Rajeswari and naming her as LR Eswari. This was done to identify the latter from the already popular MS Rajeswari reputed for singing in child's voice. Besides, KVM got on verywell with all other MDs Directors and artistes. He was in a way responsible for SJ's singing career, as he made use of her in most of his movies even when she was not a very busy artiste in the early 1970s. Who can forget his articulate perseverence of making SPB sing Shankarabaram songs, though SPB was quite reluctant to start with. Certainly this one movie wiped off any label on SPB as a singer of a limited range. Truly the stature of SPB rose to meteoric heights. These were some significant contributions of KVM besides excellent numbers.

KVM's another splendid movie is Kungumam.

2 superb compositions in this movie :

1. Chinnanchiriya vannaparavai ennathai solludhamma

Oorvasi Saradha starts the song ( S.Janaki ) and mid way she struggles only for Nadigar Thilagam in his own majestic way ( TMS ofcourse ) comes to her rescue ..... Manadhinile thondrum mayakangal kodi....
A song set to Dharbari Kanada scale & towards the end both challenge in swara notes & finally TMS goes to very high pitch & ends with a flourish !

2. Thoongadha kan indru ondru

One can sense the night effect given through the melodious tune & the ludes ! fantastic tune . TMS and PS this time taking honours

A nice movie also

One among the wonderful album of KVM is 'Navarathiri'.

He compossed four songs in four different moods.

1. 'sollavaa kadhai sollava' by PS, nice lullaby for Savithri with kutti Padmini.

2. 'iravinil aattaam pagalinil thookkam' by TMS for the drunken role of Shivaji

3. 'pottathu mulaichudhadi kannamma' by TMS for the farmer Shivaji.

4. 'rajaathi raja maha' by TMS and PS for therukoothu Shivaji

(incrediblel voice modulation by TMS between the three songs)

Dear friends,
Talking of KVM, TMS combination I am reminded of that grand number "Yaerikkaraiyin Maelae Poravalae PeNN mayilae" from the movie Mudhalaali. Surely, years have rolled off [ over 5 decades] now. Yet, if one happens to hear the song, definitely 2 things will come to our mind. 1. How a song can be made lovely by the very tune and 2. The life in a song owes itself to the singer[s]. On this second item the song is quite astonishing for the excellent nuances of singing and the rich voice held in top ehelons throughout the song while still sustaining the emotion in thought. What a great number in 1956-57. The "aalapana" in this number can be a separate item for trend setting efforts of KVM

How about PanamA PAsamA --All the songs in this movie are fine, Mariyadhu Nenjam- A Sweet melody by PS, Mella X3 Endhan Meni Nadunguthu Mella - a TMS -PS Duet".

The kind of fusion TMS & PS voices were able to acheive to effect the mood of the latter song is simply superb. Each of the Charanams will be different in itself, and the Way TMS or PS sings the same charanam will be unique to him/herself. That is the kind of Geniuses we had those days

When a formal / official relationship gradually gets transformed to the next level …to that of love…..how each character will react ? its beautifully portrayed by the great K.S.Gopalakrishnan ( KSG ) in SARADHA Vijayakumari’s father S.V.Rangarao runs a school where SSR is a teacher….as frequently they come across each other, Vijayakumari starts admiring the cultured qualities of SSR ( perfect example of a teacher’s attributes ) and expresses her intentions to marry…..but SSR , well aware of his constraints / limitations as someone working under SVR , gently and diplomatically avoids this development……..

However, as every day passes by, the admiration towards SSR grows to such an extent that Vijayakumari finds the life meaningless if her love doesn’t succeed……

VK was not attracted by SSR’s physical appearance but gets fascinated by his cultured behaviour and etiquette which makes her more firm and determined as days pass by

Here comes a gem of a song which IMO should be rated amongst the top 25 of PS …

ORUTHI ORUVANAI NINAITHU VITAAL ANDHA URAVUKKU PEYAR ENNA

PS and PBS combination had given several evergreen hits but this song is real class ….

Why even today, we are admiring the songs of yesteryears is simply for the fact that they had splendid , thoughtful , poetic lyrics very well supported by melodious music…..

K.V.Mahadevan , the veteran MD who was as good as Mellisai Mannar MSV, came out with an outstanding composition in this song

Lets understand the lyrics as usual as its quite apt to the situation…..

Its Vijayakumari who poses questions to herself in isolation, enjoying and cherishing every moment of her inter action with SSR while imagining as if she is chatting with him live !

For her, its SSR everywhere she sees !!

Andha oruvan oruthiyai manandhu kondal anddha urimaikku peyar enna - Kudumbam

Ninaithavan avalai marandhu vitaal andha nilamayin mudivena – Thuyaram

Pirindhavar meendum serndhu vitaal angu penmayin nilai enna – Mounam

As the image of SSR responds to every VK’s poser , for this word, KSG very poetically shows SSR’s image inside a Buddha idol responding ! nice presence of mind by the director

Quite interesting exchanges during the first charanam….

Iravum pagalum un uruvam adhil ingum angum yen uruvam - Adakkam enbadhu penn uruvam adhai arindhaal maraiyum yen uruvam…..

Marakka muyandren mudiyavillai …unnai maraikka muyandren nadakka villai –

For which SSR diplomatically responds by saying …. Sollum nilayilum naan illai …unnai nerungum thagudhiyum enakkillai ! terrific !!

Now VK turns adamant and firm on her mission ……during the second charanam

Ketten kaytadhu kidaikka villai …ennai geli seidhaai manam porukka villai – Vaadham seivadhu yen kadamai adhil vaziyai kaanbadhu un thiramai

Kanden kandadhu nalla vazi adhu kaadhalan udanay sellum vazee

For which finally SSR moves a bit forward by saying….

Sonnen palamurai yaasikiraai….nee sonnadhai naanum ………. Yosikiren !!

KSG all through the song uses the image of SSR on to various objects and conveys his thoughts very poetically with all the etiquette of a learned school teacher ….

The beauty of this song lies from the fact that at the end , the director makes the hero rethink his thoughts and forge towards a new relationship …that of a love

This is what nice characterization is all about and the directors of yester years were seasoned experts in this art of presentation….

This is another movie which is dominated by a woman character …Saradha very well played by Vijayakumari …..Though SVR will be adamant , he yields to her pressure and finally agrees to the proposal ….but the movie doesn’t end here….the character Saradha faces more problems from time to time which she counters admirably before finally ending her life and sacrifices purely to glorify her love over her dear husband SSR….

SSR interestingly , made debut along with Nadigar thilagam in Parasakthi and was on even terms with him for a decent tenure …the only short coming IMO could be the romance factor which SSR had his limitations
SSR is a very decent , cultured actor….one of the best in the industry those days in tamil accent as his pronounciation was excellent , candid and precise…I love his way of tamil speaking…SSR was one of those actors with dignity and also who maintained some decorum…later stepped into politics and associated with Makkal thilagam and was a successful in MLA elections….

I understand, PS got award for this outstanding song ….Indeed splendid rendition …..as the start itself will be so soft , gentle, melodious and mild…..you will realize that suddenly a gentle voice comes out from the mother of tamil film music, PS…..oruthi oruvanai ninaithu vitaal !
And just hear the subtle difference when she sings the words…Ketten ketadhu kidaikkavillai…… it will appear as if PS herself is longing for this marriage proposal ! such was her intensity and observation of the mood of the song !!

These type of committed singing is totally absent now a days….

KSG had given 3 lovely characters ….one that of Savithri in Kai kodutha deivam, KRV in Karpagam and this Saradha character …..His basic strengths are strong screen play and emotional dialogues…..

KVM, affectionately called as Mama in tfm, had given lots of splendid compositions and IMO, Thiruvilayaadal, Iruvar ullam, Yeni padigal, Sankarabaranam, Thiruvarutchelvar, Thilaana mohanaambaal stand tall and are time immemorial hits…..

Its really sad that we are not able to listen to such meaningful and poetic songs now a days…
