Thanks Mr. Raghavendar for having given the link of the concerned audio as per my request.

This is one of the great example of how to set the music for re recording. Many believe that re recording is the way to show once skill in music. Well that can be right to some extent. But the fundamental requirement of the re recording is to express the emotion of the situation in that scene which has to be in cohesiveness to the acting and the dialog. This is the basic requirement and the skill of music extra are the bonus. And that MSV always I mean ALWAYS ensure that the first part is definitely met.

But here in this case there is no dialog in the situation. Hence it becomes much more imperative for MSV to express the situation in the right emotion by music.

I need to explain the situation so that the readers can understand better. This is a situation in which Kamal plays Mirudangam, when Srvidya is bathing and she not aware that he can play was surprised as to who is playing. After coming out and knowing that it was kamal who played. she praises and congratulates him.

It is at this juncture that Kamal makes a comment which brings the situation we are discussing. He says that it is not fair that she praises him verbally and goes on to say whether she would do the same if one her girl students performs indirectly indicating the incidence earlier when Srividya kissed her girl student for the performance.

Now we need to understand why the director kept that scene in the story line. The reason is that Kamal being a tough and intemperate character becomes moderate because of music and slowly even without he himself knowing a love blossoms in his heart. This is the starting point but it is not open but hidden under the other explanations like guru, shishya etc.So the dialog explains as to what sort of emotions Kamal undergoes in that situation.

But what about Srividya? What sort of emotions she undergoes when Kamal indirectly ask for kiss. The point is the diirector never told in that scene at all because there is no dialog for Srividya at all once Kamal asks for a kiss.

Here comes MSV to fill that Void of expressing the emotions through his music which the director could not do.

The scene is that Srividya walks a few yards towards him and takes his right hand and kisses

All through this action which goes for approximately 40 seconds MSV comes out with a music of a particular raga in classical Carnatic music. This is appropriate as the subject itself is about the story of a woman who is the Carnatic music singer.

The point is that he touched the Raga 'RANJANI' is the highlight of all these. Srividya's daughter name in that movie is 'RANJANI' !!!

How could he have got that inspiration. The reason is that he put himself in the position of Srividya during the composition of rerecording so he could feel the emotion. But it is easier said than done. Many are not able to do such thing which is the gift MSV possessed.

There is also one more possibility that he could have got that idea flashed. That he used the raga 'Bairavi' to express though the songs 'Adisaya Ragam' could have influenced him.

Anyway this is one of the great piece of work with which we can go in to MSV's mind during the time of composition.

Now after reading this post Please go to the two audios once again a see for yourself.

Regards,

N Y MURALI
