Dear Friends,
There could be an inconclusive debate as to whom the title fits the most. I have indicated 'inconclusive' as the outcome brcause any single artiste or technical team can be one in 1000. The intended suggestion is -the movie was not shot in the comfortable confines of the studios but in wierd ambience of sea shore at Karwar near Mangalore.
As a matter of fact, next to 'ThEn nilavu', 1000 il oruvan has had the distinction of moving the movie outfit 'lock, stock and barrel to a distant location from where getting back to HQ would certainly have been a project by itself.
All credit should go to B.R Pantulu who conceived and executed the idea by taking all artistes to the venue except V R on whose brilliance the movie turned a run away hit [once again for the variety in compositions and orchestration].
Now- a-days such a project is ruled out from the angles of national security and the prospect of some bigwigs being held hostages by terror outfits in a bid to extract ransom from all the captives. That such dangers are of recent origin is a passive reminder of the tranquility we have had in the region.
The choice of Jayalalithaa to team up with MGR was entirely that of BR Pantulu from his Kannada cinema venture in the project "Chinnadha gombe' where JL was the heroine along with KalyaNakumar the hero. It was a hit movie remade in Tamil as 'muradan Muthu'. Besides , BR.Pantulu was a respected producer in South Indian languages and therefore he could get permission from any Govt.
[ Remember how BR P managed to shoot 'karNan' in Jaipur]. But managing such a huge troupe as in '1000 il oruvan' is no mean feat considering the wide ranging requirements of stay, food, healthcare for artistes and technical teams besides the 'raw stock of film' that has to be kept under prescribed temperature regimes of storage for colour fidelity.
My intention of touching these points is just to highlight the scale of preparations that should have gone into this project soon after 'karNan' released in 1964. The shooting of '1000 il oruvan' should have happened between Nov.1964 and March 1965. [Later, this 'period' received political attention from detractors of MGR]
Another dimension of value to this project was V R 's music and BGM before they fell apart as MSV and TKR. The music was [as ever of this duo] a classic unparalleled and absolutely synchronous with the theme lasting for ever as a monument of wizardry in apt choice of orchestral elements.
Warm regards Prof.K.R Madurai.
