Dear Mr.Ragasudha and managing crew of our site,
Thanks for the timely input as it comes at a time when we have been impoverished of such delights. May I request our crew to document these episodes for the benefit of posterity so that we can build appropriate archive on MSV and his contributions to TFM?

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai

I have, since long, been curious to find out whether Singara Velane was composed by MSV and used by SMS. This composition looks too good for SMS's standard.

Dear Mr Parthavi,
While understanding your admiration for MSV, it is a little unrealistic to doubt Mr SMS' credentials as a composer. In fact several of his songs resemble MSV's style. To me at least it looks plausible to believe that there could have been a mutual influence between MSV and SMS. Even some of the later songs of SMS look like those of MSV. But, where MSV stood stall and apart was his absolute skills in orchestration. In fact, none has hitherto come anywhere near his orchestration in terms of smooth blending and exceptionaly pleasant amalgam of instruments. The song in question has just been classical with no special orchestral arrangements. Let us concede that on occasions others can too show sparks of brilliance.
Thank you for the opportunity K.Raman Madurai

Dear Prof,

I have no hesitation in giving credit to SMS for the songs in his name, though many of them should have had MSV's contribution.

But SMS has not produced another composition that can even come close to Singaravelane. That is the reason for my doubt. Even before I came to know that several of SMS's songs were MSV's creations (from the revelation made by the late Visweswaran in Kumudam, perhaps the first public revelation), I had been wondering about this song.

SMS is a composer in his own right. Quite possibly, he had influenced MSV during his early years, at least by default, though later, MSV was able to break himself of all influences and create a universe of his own in which he alone could dwell as the Emperor, but a humble one at that. But in my opinion, this does nothing to quell my doubts about the creator of thise song. This was a song which had only a singer and a Nadaswaram Vidwan. There was no scope for orchestration and any attempt to introduce orchestration would have affected the quality. So, lack of orchestration cannot automatically rule MSV out.

This song stands out not only from all other songs of SMS but from other songs of this film as well. In its review of Thillaanaa Mohanaambal, Kumudham wrote, 'Nadhaswarana vidwanai kathaanaayakanaagak konda ippadaththil oru Singaara velane konjaadhadhu oru kuraithaan." Such was the electrifying effect of this song and this song still ranks high along with MSV's creations.

I know there can't be a definite answer to this question. Even if someone who was with MSV at that time were to answer this question, it may not be authentic. So, let the question remain a question in my mind!

Dear Mr. Parthavi,
Sorry that once again I infringe into your domain of personal freedom of assessment based on perceptions the way you look at MSV - SMS, wherein a reference comes to 'revelations' from a section of the press.Well, the first ever revelations of SMS' availing of MSV's tunes as those of self [SMS], came from none other than SMS himself in late fifties. The instance goes like this :When Kovai based [Jupiter ?] studio wound up, all the artistes were advised to seek better pastures and the company does not intend keeping any of them as they were moving to Chennai. It was then that SMS spilled the beans that "whatever songs were credited to me were really those of Viswanathan" and he firmly appealed to the proprietor that MSV be taken along as others can manage to find alternatives. On more than one occasion MSV has repeated this information in media. Therefore, whatever benefits SMS derived from MSV were not concealed and that SMS behaved more as a human at a critical juncture in MSV's life. It rendered the everlasting bondage between SMS-MSV to the ultimate point of MSV litting the pyre of the then orphaned couple Mr and Mrs. SMS in the late 1970s. Any of these pieces of information is just meant as reflection of relations between the two beyond their credentials in the profession.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Parthavi Sir,

Just to add few more points on SMS's creativity :

1. Mannippu - There is a song Nee enge en ninaivugal angey

SMS had set 3 different tunes for the lyric and all are splendid ones ! and one was a classical tune also .

2. Nadodi mannan

MGR will be singing a song ...Uzaipadhilaa uzaippai peruvadhilaa inbam....set to Karaharapriya ragam I think... will be too good

Well, both movies came after MSV became independent . The point here is that SMS still could give melodious songs after MSV's exit. However, the MSV-TKR became a lethal combination which set a new trend and in the process, many legends including GR faded slowly

The song "Neeraazhi Mandapathil' from 'Thalaivan' is another one gem from SMS.

Dear Parthavi sir,

Just to substantiate that the credit for Singara velane should go to SMS only ..

Google search reveals that the movie Konjum Salangai came in 1962 ( another search says 64 ). So, you can make your own assessment now . There cannot be a chance for MSV to assist SMS during this period. MSV-TKR were too busy with their own compositions. Smile
