Hi Shankar, quite amazing how MSV comes up with winners always. Each of the songs you have mentioned have a different hue to it , some serious and self-recriminating, some with gay abandon and so on. 'dayiriyamAga.." is a lesson for fledgling composers on how to tune for lyrics. Note the difference between the pallavi, a striking and scything attack on the perpetrator with a question, the answer in the negative and the list of wrong doings being read (read sung) out at "nee thAn oru mirugam". The very tone is as if a judge is reeling off the offences committed. "manamum nalla guNamum" adds a dash of melancholy , exhibiting a touch of regret.

'nALai muthal kudikka mAttEn' is yet another case of tuning class. The tune and the words for the first 2 lines of the pallavi were supplied by MSV with KD changing precisely a word as he was more in sync with the psyche of a perpetual drunkard than MSV himself !! Rest of the song was tuned for pre-written lyrics. The touch of Subapantuvarali (as pointed out by Ananthu on Jaya TV) at "budhhi uLLa pOthu ..." and the susequent line clearly express the remorse of man typically looking back at his life and sighing over the clearly avoidable pitfalls he succumbed to. And what else, that is the only place where Subhapantuvarali is let in, into the song Smile Salutations to the ever sensitive Master.

Friends,
There is a song sung by Kamal Haasan (probably the only one under MM?) which is a stage song in an inebriated condition with SriPriya (?) Probably, 'thanniya pottain..'? Thought this song falls under this category...
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan

I heard the song 'Ellorum paarkka en ullasa vaazhkkai' from 'Avalukkkendror Manam' only yesterday.

A very fit song for this category. The tune has everything intoxication as well as sober.

'Kadavul padaichchaan ulagam undaachchu
Manushan kudichchaan ulagam rendaachchu'

from the Rajini starrer Pokkiri Raajaa is another example. Composed brilliantly and rendered equally brilliantly (by SPB), this Kuththu song also includes narration of two stories about drunkards in the interludes.
