Dear All,

Its a novel concept I saw yesterday !

Our dear MSV was on his pet harmonium churning out tunes for a given lyric which 2 youngsters were asked to sing as if this is a live recording of a song.
I found this theme novel and quite interesting !

MSV presented a beautiful tune with some very delightful pauses . The unique structure he arranged was really too good !

I think this will be a continuous process .

Pls do watch without fail.

Yesterday's episode was equally interesting . The legend presented tunes with different rhythms and the final one had a touch of Dharmavathi raga ! Suhasini was looking overjoyed and was speaking with MSV giving the feeling of a Daughter-Father like interaction .

Whats really amazing is that this great man , even at this age, still has creativity in structuring a song !

The Judges were very supportive and encouraging the participants by taking notes of the tunes and were guiding the youngsters.

Really a novel method to pick the best singers and identify talent ! Hats off to Kalaignar TV .

Dear friends,
Thanks for the links. Lot of talking by the hostess (?) but unusually, our MM also spoke a bit long! This was a welcome feature. We could witness the creation yet again and yet again! Did our friends realise the gravity of the 'original' version of Yaar andha nilavu? It was grand, beautiful, spontaneous, and marvellous. Better than the recorded version by TMS...The western European touch in his voice when he very casually began the song...Extraordinary!
Thanks once again. Please provide links to the subsequent episodes too.
Eagerly awaiting the new ones,
Sai Saravanan

What a memorable fortnight this has been
with MEGA TV,is only retelecasting Endrum MSV , the void is well compensated initially by Vijay TV s super singer episodes with MSV , then jaya tvs thrumbi paarkiraen (still continuing ) and now the peak of all kalaigner TV s Duet Paadavaa .-

what to say
what i have been telling aathavan , to capture , suhasini did.atleast partially
but still to have a whole magnitute , we need to have Vaalee or muthulingam or pulamaipithan to write the lyrics to which the song is tuned . probabaly Kb to narrate the situation

with suhasini this can happen . let me see whether my suggestion can be implemented ..for the final of this reality show.

by the by , has any one noticed Yg mahendran mentioning about MSV times.com. in msv's thirumbi paarkirean ..

Enjoy folks

Dear All,

The above is the 25th August programme.

Again, the Judges Magathi and Sriram have been very supportive and very friendly while pointing out the errors and both were technically sound .

Suhasini makes a neat presentation with a personal touch giving an informal scenario.

Sriram and Magadhi too sang a lovely piece tuned by MSV . Watch it from 42nd second onwards. The tune has a Mohanam feeling ! The thalam set was quite nice !

The participants are blessed to have a good learning experience .

Requesting our hub administrators to store these recordings . These are all rare collections.

Dear friends,
That MSV fixes a tune even as he gazes the lyric phrase has been shared by many. This is the first ever occasion that he does it to the benefit of a TV show. Time and again MSV has been telling that words carry the tune. On the face of it, it appears incomprehensible, for we are puzzled of the prospect of 'resident tune' in words. Listening to MSV and his music for near 5 decades plus it appeals to me thus: On the mere sight of a word MSV instantly grasps the meaning and is not tied down by the verbal glory. As one who grasps the meaning, the contextual /situational meaning [connotation], it possesses his mind which rapidly responds with apt 'Swarams' that would straightaway elevate the mood of the lyric. That is why, while training the singer, MSV steadfastly adheres to pronunciation and well intended stretches nearly bordering on pauses to drive the song and the listener to a new feel of emotion-rich delivery. Having grasped the story and the lyrical embellishment ['sequence' in MSV's par lance] needed, he rapidly assembles musical notes for the interludes; so much so, instruments blend themselves in to the most cohesive and confluent outfit that have a glistening stamp of MSV.
Do we have the freedom to call it reverse logic? My intent here is to understand his strategy. While a lesser mind would choose a tune to meet the emotion, MSV adopts a strategy of emotion-driven approach to formulate the best assembly of tunes/ notes for verb, voice and accommodative orchestration that is always subservient to the emotion. Needless to state that the glorious stars of yester decades had their task well cut out having been brilliantly crafted in MSV's music. No wonder he has rendered immortal music that not only stays but keeps growing younger with time.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Prof,
You are very right in describing his style as 'Reverse Logic'. Because of the uniqueness in his melody against all other sundries who have similarity in them many have not been able understand his music though they are able to appreciate.

Take the case of the recent programme in 'Paadavaa Duet Paadalai' in which Suhasini wanted to know how TMS songs composed by him was sounding very different for MGR and Sivaji. MSV tries ti impress that he did not compose the song for Sivaji or MGR but for the character but she was not convinced. Then he had to narrate the story of the song 'Vizheye Kadai Yezhudhu' which was composed, sung and recorded for Sivaji but changed to MGR.

Thanks,

I think MSV may not be completely right in saying that he doesn't compose songs for Sivaji or MGR but for the character. If this were so, why does he use PBS's voice for Gemini? Moreover, when it comes to love duets, the personality of the character doesn't count. I think MSV does tune the composition style to the voice of the actor. Mr. Thumba Sekar said in one of our meetings,"People praise TMS for modulating his voice differently for Sivaji and MGR but the credit should go to MSV because the difference is created only by his composing style." MSV has done this unconsciously and always hastens to come with his standard reply whenever this question is posed.

Dear Mr.SRS,
In your aggressive mood to fortify your perceptions of establishing MSV's priority for character over that of the on-screen person, you have hit the line in one stroke. I am able to visualize an emotion -chocked SRS rapidly raising the points. Let us cool down
All of us have forgotten TMS USED FOR GEMINI GANESAN IN THAT LOFTY NUMBER 'madhuraiyil parandha meen kodiyai' for sheer flamboyance of the mood of the lyric. Why so much acrimony? After all it was MSV who brought in the trend of two female singers -one for heroine and the other for the next character; for male artistes he had the bigger yardstick like the "ability to bring emotions and Sangathis to the fore". Another case in pont is 'yAr andha nilavu" when MSV did not wait for any one's clearance to acknowledge TMS's new low decibel singing. Also, MSV came out with another TMS jolt in that ever soft duet [TMS PS] 'thEdivarum deiva sugam' of the movie "nimirndhu nil" even as he availed of TMS for the peppy 'themmangu' 'oththaiyadi pAdhaiyilE [TMS PS] in the same movie.
Cases are innumerable and as ever MSV is the best judge of what to do , when and with whom.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Prof and SRS, I don't see any aggressive tone or acrimony in SRS's response. As professor himself has pointed out in more than one occasion, in the healthy discussion in our forum, there is no scope for acrimony. While respecting your individual views, I believe that MSV does take into account the voice of the actor while composing a song. What I said about MSV's subtle differentiation in providing for the nuances of the distinct voices of Sivaji and MGR was to emphasize another of his silent feats to which credit has been unfairly given to TMS, though TMS deserves credit for using his voice to the best advantage, as programmed by MSV, of course.

TMS's rendering of Maduraiyil pirantha was not well received by the audience. The lyrics would have suited an aggressive MGR eminently but not a soft and affable Gemini. It was Vali's blunder to have written such a song for Gemini. MSV could not but have chosen TMS for this song considering its tone. But we can see how MSV has made TMS's voice to suit Gemini in the song 'Siriththaalum kanneer varum' from Penne nee Vazhga. Especially the charanam will bear testimony to Thumba Sekar's assertion that TMS's modulations were the products of MSV's composition.

What was so great about the character of the hero of Selva Magal to inspire MSV to compose one of the most immortal songs'Kuyilaaga naanirnthenna?' The only inspiration was Kavignar's mesmerizing lyrics. We can say in most of MGR's films, the hero's character would be stereotype. yet MSV has made almost all songs of MGR superlative.

In short, when Suhasini was commenting about TMS's remarkable capacity to modulate his voice to suit Sivjai or MGR, MSV's quick reaction saying that he composed songs for the character, not the actor was an unconsious reference to his own role in structuring the difference, though his assertion , in my opinion, cannot be taken at its face value

If MSV composes tunes for the character then MSV will always be the best singer as he could alone bring out the best of his compositions as acknowledged by many singers that they have hardly touched about 70% of what MSV taught them.

MSV himself vehemently objected when Viatnam Veedu Sundaram wanted to retain his voice for the song ' Paalootti Valartha Kili' and wanted only TMS to sing that song.

Dear SRS,

As I have already pointed out, I didn't perceive any aggression or acrimony. I believe that harmony results from different notes not from a monotone. Both of us have been talking about the genius of MSV but from different perceptions.

The Selvamagal example was not because I found it convenient but because you had mentioned this film. The examples you have cited are about situations not about characters. The difference in TMS's tone for 'avan ninaiththaana' and 'O paranthu sellum sittukkurivi' from this film is born out of situations not out of character, which is the same. But the fact remains that he has mostly used TMS for Jayashankar, as he has for Sivaji, MGR etc and PBs for Gemini.

The song 'pillaikkuth thanthai oruvan' could have been sung equally well by PBS considering its soft tune but MSV used TMS only because the song was to be sung by Sivaji. The difference in the tone of this song and 'ullam enbadhu aamai' (both sung by Sivaji in Parththaal pasi theerum) comes out of the difference in situations not of characters. Pillaikkuth thanthai, despite its undertone of resignation to a painful reality, is sung in a state of tranquility while Ullam enbadhu aamai depicts the tremblings of a disturbed mind. The beauty of MSV's creation is that this difference is reflected not just in the orhestration and the tune but the tone of the singer as well. My case is that giving credit to TMS for this tonal difference is to ignore the painstaking labor of MSV.

When I said what MSV said could not be taken at face value, it was not in the connotation of his credibility, questioning which will be an act of heresy for me but in the backdrop of several nuances that this great composer constructs so intricately and subtly that he himself is not aware of them.

I see perfect harmony in both our views in that both are rays emanating from the iridescent glow of MSV's creations diverging into different angles but converging to the same point of origin once they are reflected back.

(Incidentally, the song 'siriththaalum kanneer varum' mentioned by me in my previous post is from 'Pen Endraal Pen.' I had mentioned the name as 'penne nee vaazhga' by mistake. (This is just to put the record straight by correcting my error.)

Dear Friends,
With nothing at stake, we are able to adhere to our lines of perception.Well, that is the hall mark of intellect at its best. Stil, I do find harmony and any suggestion of acrimony could at best be a tentative signal of looking duly different. As regards you two [Mr Rengaswamy and Mr.SRS] I owe special thanks, as at the moment, you are the one's living up to the definition of discussion; more so at a time when I find soliloquies splashing with no definite target. Had it not been for your postings I would conveniently have stood off from entering discussions. If in the process I have inserted displeasure to any I stand to be pardoned for intervention. I trust, I have not trespassed domains. I would acknowledge without a shadow of reservation that such discussions alone can keep the site live and take us forward in such analytic pursuits, however subtle the differences are. Thanks for the opportunity.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai
