Dear Friends,
As stated earlier, I continue with the theme 'melancholy', merely because with in this ambit, still a lot more holds appeal, notwithstanding the fact that it would be well nigh impossible to cover ground even to a minimum extent.

'kaNNA nalamA, krishNA sugamA' "kAviyaththalaivi" PS

Quite a challenging task for the music team and KD MSV have never shrunk in magnitude more so if challenges are thrown up. KD HAS AMPLY DEMONSTRATED HIS penchant for emotive phraseology and MSV has dealt a fitting approach to squeeze emotions by sheer pace variation of note and tricky orchestration of 'withdrawals' / sudden 'peep ins' of heavy orchestral interjects that truly portray MSV through every iota of the song.
'orE pAdal unnai azhaikkum' vandhAL" TMS
'pAr magaLe pAr' of the same title TMS
'avaL parandhu pOnALE' -as the above TMS , PBS
'avan ninaiththAnA idhu nadakkum endru' "selva magaL" TMS. In all these cases, melancholy is the lone common element. But, each number is structured differently to suit precisely the 'on screen' mood of the character . Writhing pain reveals itself in charanam lines where MSV has employed the richest value for vocal chords and adapted orchestration that stays relegated as the undercurrent of pathos.

'nenjam marappadhillai' a title number PS PBS

where MSV patietly waited to patent his supremacy by way of a tune that would behold the title for ever. He has perfectly crafted the opening to take the story characters back to their previous birth while making the viewer long for the reunion of the two savageously dispossessed by brutal power in the previous incarnation. KD for his part has churned out a lyric that bridges generations; largely the lyric survives by the exceptionally crafted tune and a brisk but melancholic play of violins -a feat by any standard.

'neerAdum kaNgal ingE' "veNNira Aadai" PS

I incorporate the song for more than one reason. Chopped off the movie but never from the minds of listeners even if heard once. Again KD summarizes the story of a mentally disturbed girl well on her road to recovery. Certainly a demanding task as any poor phrasing would have tarnished the status of the character. Look at the lines

'kAdhaliththEdi nAn alaindhOnO, kAraNaththodE nAn siriththOnO,
unnai kkanda pOdhu uNarvugaL Edhu? nee vandha pinnE nimmadhi Edhu?'

The true masters have lent their skills to full; MSV , for this pathos song used an uncommon orchestration that revels in multi-layer Guitar-violin confluence with no trace of shehnoy type of instruments. What a thoughtful MD that MSV was in launching a novel trait of guitar-led symphony where the tune itself is pathos-ridden. Marvellous indeed. May be we wind up melancholy, led I should bear the brunt of melancholyzing our forum.
Warm regards K.Raman Camp: Navi Mumbai
