I attended the function. My interest in this function was on two accounts. One, V-R were being honored. Two, I have been fascinated by the film Parthaal Pasi Theerum. I saw this film only in the 70's, more than 10 years after its release but I vividly remember that I was enchanted by the songs of this film from the time I heard them in the radio at the time of the film's release. Though I was only 10 years old at that time, too young to appreciate music, I was spellbound by ALL the songs of the film. 'Yarukku Mappillai Yarp' remains my favorite, though. I recall my enjoying the orchestration (what we would call 'the background music' in our childhood.) also. So, the very mention of the name of this film excites me.
I also found this film quite enjoyable when I saw it much later in the TV, though I remember that the reviews had rated this film as average. In my opinion, this is one of the films in which Sivaji has displayed restrained acting. I always like Gemini's natural and dignified acting. Saroja Devi's childlike innocence (in contrast with her childish prattle and acts in some other films), Sowcar's maturity, Savitri's effortless flow of acting and my all time favorite Thangavelu's presence (though the comedy track of this film is only average), the enjoyable first part of the film are the things that I like about this film. The scene in which Thangavelu enters Gemini's cabin and asks for a job for Sivaji is highly enjoyable.
This film is shown in the TV every couple of months in some channel or other. I watch the film quite often till 'Yaruukku mappillai' song (after which the film becomes more serious and not so enjoyable, except for the song sequences)
The function was mainly to launch NTFANS (Nadigar Thilagam's Film Appreciation Society). I was happy to know that our Raghavendran is the Secretary of the Society and YGM acknowledged his efforts in forming the society and organizing the function. Mr. Raghavendran was present on the stage but kept a low profile in keeping with his humble nature. (I also saw Mr. Sabesan among the audience)
The launching of this forum was made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of 'Paarththal Pasi Theerum'. M/s TKR (MSV could not make it), Sowcar, Aroor Doss, ALR, Sivaji's son Ramkumar, Gemini's daughter Dr. Kamala Selvaraj were the people connected with the film who were present and honored. (YGM's daughter Madhuvanti received the momento on behalf of Savitri in her capacity as having married Savitri's grandson!) ALR sang a few lines of 'Andru oomaip pennallo' and TKR said that he felt like playing the violin when he heard the song. Aroro Doss waxed eloquence on his "accomplishments." Two bits of info I gathered from his self-praising talk were:
1) In a dialogue he wrote for Veerath thirumagan, Sachu says about her lover. 'Avarai paarththal pasi theerum.' When he mentioned this casually to Bhim Singh, Bhim Singh adopted this as the title for the film . Prior to that, the title of the film was 'Aval thantha vaazhvu.'
2 Gemini was to have played the role played by Balaji in 'Padiththaal maatum podhuma' but he declined the offer since he felt that the spectre of his writing an anonymous letter to snatch Savitri away from Sivaji as per the story line may have a negative impact considering the fact that Savitri was his wife in real life (and he had married her only recently.)
I was happy to hear Ramkumar sharing my perception that he considered paarththal pasi theerum to be the best among all 'paa' series films. He said in no other film you could see a limping hero wearing a tie and singing a duet!
At the end of the function, the film was screened. I saw the film till the song 'Yarukku mappillai yaro' (as per my practice) and then left for home to catch up with my other activities.
Thanks to Sri Raghavendran for the opportunity. My best wishes to NTFANS. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

I simply love Nadigar Thilagam in PPT Very controlled and matured acting ! But he will show different dimensions of his class everywhere :
With Savitri - A very responsible brother , securing the interests of Gemini and maintaining status quo with Savitri- Gemini
Gemini - A good friend , at times an employee and a well wisher too
Saroja devi - Fact being his Boss's sister in law, the kind of arms length distance but at the same time quietly enjoying his coversation with her . One should observe that at the end of the song Yaarukku maappillai yaaro, he will give a majestic walk with a wry smile ! I will totally surrender for this smile .
Kamal - a loving and caring Uncle

Here is Malathi Rangarajan's coverage of the program. To my pleasant surprise, she has devoted one paragraph to VR's music, which I reproduce below:
‘Paarthaal …' remains an incredible musical bonanza from M.S. Viswanathan and T.K. Ramamurthy. Sadly MSV couldn't make it to the event, but TKR's presence made up for it. Listening to A.L. Raghavan sing a few lines of ‘Andru Oomai Pennallo…' another evergreen hit from the film, TKR said he regretted not having a violin with him to play the wondrous notes, just as he had done for the original. Raghavan's voice was as fresh as it was 50 years ago when he had first sung it!

Dear Sri Raghavendran,
Though no other film's golden jubilee was celebrated, YGM celebrated the 40th year of Kadhalikka Neramillai. I don't know what made him do that without waiting for the 50th year but his celebration was prophetic and timely because Sridhar was alive at that time. MSV also participated in the function.
As for MSV being ignored in selection of awards, it is my humble opinion that it is unrealistic to expect that some award will be given to this maverick at this stage. Let us ignore the awards and move ahead in celebrating the great man's music for its value. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)
