Dear friends,
Mellisai Mannar's official first film was released in December 1952 and this year 60 years will be completed since then, though he has been working much before that. Many of us will be curious to have a glimpse of old newspaper / magazine pages covering Mellisai Mannargal. This thread will see such rare images. I propose to upload whatever collection I have in due course. To start with, our dear friend N.Y. Murali has forwarded a few pages from Pesum Padam magazine (probably in end of 1960, because the details of issue is not known, may be he will explain) and I am giving below the links for the same:

Dear Sri Raghavendran,

Informative and enjoyable collections. Though there is some discontinuity, the articles make good reading. The photos that come with the articles are an added bonus

Pl keep posting more such clippings, as proposed by you.

You are one person who have been posting highly informative messages, rare links etc. This kind of contribution from you is highly valuable to the site in general and to people like me in particular.

Even if some of your postings may not get any response, please keep sharing the fruits of your painstaking research in the interest of posterity. These postings may be enjoyed by someone even after 100 years.

My thanks to N Y Murali for sharing these.

Thanks, regards and best wishes.

Dear Mr. Ragasuda,
Thanks for uploading the info for the benefit of our forum. The interview definitely seems to have been given after the trio 'pa' series Paalum Pazhamum, Paava Mannippu and Paasa malar.

This also shows how much paava mannippu has impacted.

Look how much in detail MSV has spoken about the composing.

He says specifically about the new style he has used for composing 'atthan en atthan'. This also makes it clear that from the time of paava mannippu the new style could have flowered in full flow.

The moment he had the new style of composing in his forte it took only 15 minutes whereas in the old style he had to wait for 6 years that too without success.

Bhaskar, run the cursor on the reading material itself and your cursor will change to the shape of a lense with a '+' sign, indicating zoom. Please do a mouse left click and watch the miracle Smile

I had decided to cover these very articles in a new thread......when I saw this thread !!! The photocopy of the article was handed over to us by Ashok Iyer, a reluctant "forumer". Yes, rub your eyes and stare at the article in disbelief, get up and a have a glass of water and read through this articles again...you are not dreaming. It is MSV, a transparent MSV, a far cry from the cryptic composer that he is today, intending to reveal very little, enshrouding it all in an aura of mystery.

The unstated, unsaid theme of the article is ofcourse, that the stimulus for creation of music could be through multifarious sources and situations, given the omnipresent nature of music.

There seems to be this enthusiasm of a newly found joy or a composing dimension, permeating each and every piece of information shared. This feeling has had its share in creating the "new wave" music unleashed in the early sixties. MSV may have rendered himself more open to extraneous influences at this point in time, which always seems to add a couple of layers of richness to the composer within. However, the main reason for the music to have a different texture to it from the early sixties onwards is certainly the influx of movies based on social themes and the directors' ability to conjure up highly stimulating situations to score music for. These "Situational" songs will have Kannadasan attending to them first and his innovative lyrics would further pave the way for innovative music. Now we know, dont we, what MSV means when he keeps firing the cliched "team work" phrase on us. "athhAn ennathhAn" against a backdrop of a social theme, gave rise to adopting a completely different composing idiom altogether.

More on "athhAn ennathhAn"......MSV clearly states "pAttin santham eppadi puthumaiyAga irunthathO, athai pOl isaiyum puthumaiyAga amaikka vENdum endru virumbinOm".......and therefore my surmise of the past turns into an acknowledged fact now, Challenging sitatuations -> Innovative lyrics -> Music to match innovative lyrics

Dear Friends,
The links provided to look at old magazines offer several insights. Our oft-repeated suggestion 'the present day youth must be apprised' especially of the following points in demarcating the quality, sincerity, facility, technology and austerity stands fortified. Though stated as the last item , Austerity holds attention. Will any present day peon in the money-packed studios sit on the floor? What to speak of musicians and music directors?
All are at ground zero including Kavi arasu and MSV though their creations were sky rocketing then. In a crowded ambience of rehearsals, literally there is no space. Some artificial space is left around TKR to help his violin bow sweep over a wider space.
Also, artistes are glued to MSV's instructions while MSV himself is keenness personified. The then top notch singers JamunaRani ,LRE and other singers are all seated on the floor. In another shot many of the brass section are'playing' the note given as others including Nanjappa Reddiar are waiting for their turn.
The stark truth is, these rich musicians display austere attire and humble disposition to the very process of movie-making. Those men and women have churned out eternal melodies which seem to get younger as years roll by. Perhaps the term 'music kitchen' ably explains the state of affairs then. This is precisely a replica of a star hotels front room sophistication and its dark corridor -the kitchen.
Garnishing the palette does not require a decorated kitchen isn't it? Exactly MSV 's troupe served excellent dishes whether are not they were well taken care of.
I think the younger generation must recognize the futility of technology and facility which need the blessings of imagination -a commodity conspicuous by absence these days in TFM.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Ragasuda,

Thank you very much for positng rare articles of MSV of yester years, unearthing them from magizines of the past.

Almost each one of us had tried to ask (are trying !) Sri MSV how he could compose a song but misably be failing to get a proper reply from him in almost all occasions ! The answers we got from him ranged from "Did I compose this song" to "it was a team effort".

But the articles you had posted brings to light what exactly was running in MSV's mind when a situation was explained to him by a talented director, when a lyric was tabled ( I mean harmoniumed ! - I mean when the lyric was kept on his harmonium !!) or when he listned to sound of music of a Church bell or when he heard the song of fishermen at the rear side of his santhome home or when he observed the roar of waves on the beach or when he looked at 'athaan ennathan.." with a different eye/mind during Pavamannippu when compared to his view in the earlier six years.. ... ... and so on !!

His creativity was triggered during each of the above occasions, giving instant birth to an immortal melody ! This continued song after song, film after film, year after year, for 60 years, again and again !!!!!

I thank you very much Ragasuda, for proving us such a treasure of data and I am sure this will trigger our frineds in the forum to come out with creative articules on the creativity of the genius MSV !

Murali, Vatsan, Sampat, Bala, Ram - where are you all guys ?
Come on , the forum is waiting for your magnificiant writings !!

(Let the exchange of harsh words over a perception stop at this moment and let talented writings of members christen again in the forum !!)

Thanks, Ragasuda, again to you for the wonderful 'paper cuttings'.

RAMKI

Dear friends,
There has been almost nil response for the uploads. Professor has taken so much pains to collect the magazine, preserve it for soooooooooo many years and sent me the original for the benefit of our members.

Dear Sri Raghavendran,

I found the file had only some codes, not readable text. Mr. Baskar already pointed out this. You have suggested using the latest Adobe Reader. I think I am using the latest version. I don't know what others' experiences are.

You might have some hurt feelings over the recent exchanges on Karnan. But as someone who has high admiration for your contribution to the site, I would request you to desist from being offensive. (Of late, almost all your mails have a tint of hostility in them.) This will only result in alienating people.

Lack of response to mails is not a new phenomenon. Almost everyone might have experienced some disappointment at his/her mail not getting any response. That way, almost everyone is responsible for this lack of response, because he/she might not have responded to some mail or other. The list of unanswered posts runs to 8 pages!

I myself made a post 'Viswaramayanam,' in which I had listed lines from MSV's songs that cover the 7 cantos of Ramayana. There is nothing extraordinary about the post itself but the fact that the film songs of a composer covered the entire gamut of Ramayana, albeit in a few crisp lines was exciting to me. But perhaps, it was not so exciting to others since there was not a single reply to this post. Yet, there have been 240 views of this post! Or, perhaps many people shared my excitement but did not share it in writing. I am giving the link here.

http://msvtimes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2334&highlight=viswa+ramayanam

We have only two options. If we have something to say or share, we should do so, without bothering about the response. Or.....

Lest we should lose track of the main point, pl see whether you can do something about the files.

You may send me the files to my email id
prengaswami@yahoo.com
and I will see whether they open properly.
