Dear Friends,
This song from 'pAva mannippu' right away pegged PBS on to the map of TFM panorama as a sober singer from the romantic lilts that the song scaled popularity yardsticks and remains evergreen.
What made this song so very absorbing was the articulate choice of absolute superlatives for every item conceived conceived for describing the female character.
All such pleasant and caressing feels of
'vasantham'
'Oviam'
'mArgazhi'
'malligai' suggest the highest encomium. Of them the use of 'mArgazhi' is perhaps a learned borrowing from Lord Krishna's declaration
"mAdhangaLil nAn mArgazhi".
It is amazing to observe kaNNadasan's memory of epics coming into play even to describe 'earthly characters in movies. I think this facet of KD deserves a special write-up to bring out his mastery on matters of sophisticated description.
'piLLai'
'kanni'
'annai' are just indisputable for the roles suggested , while
'avaL kavignan AakkinAL ennai' comes as the best tribute signifying that , had it not been for her , he would never have reached the calibre of a poet; it is the best tribute that a man can ascribe to his lady love.
In fact, every other moment in the lyric stands out because, to my knowledge this was the first ever number from KD's stable that brought out the elegance of description using comparison as tool.
Certainly elevating the song to its glory for ever must be acknowledged to MSV.
Look at the tuneful treatment of every word and no two of them stay in the same scale and each has received the right stretch cum oscillation to emphasize the lyric content. Needless to say that orchestration was of such a standard it has already thrown the claims of technological superiority by the wayside long before the claim was born.
Friends, please add your joy on this number, just to begin the New Year with participation in analysis.
Thank you
Warm regards. K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman
