After writing this lengthy post I wanted to give the youtube link. When I searched for the youtube link I found 2 links. The first one I have given in my original post.
But when I saw the second link I was shocked, I found the uploader has mentioned in the banner as Jayachandran Songs and music by Ilayaraja. I was forced to write a comment.

My comment in the youtube is
"@ Uploader. Please check before you upload the contents. Music is by M S Viswanathan and not Ilayaraja as misleadingly informed by you. Ilayaraja cannot (I mean cannot) produce this kind of composition even if he takes 10 births."

Murali,

Beautiful analogy. Though MSV may do a bit of roaming for the sake of embellishment, he always has an eye on the Music Dharma (like Arjuna keeping his eye on Dhrmar!) and comes back to the raagaa, as beautifully explained by you. A very valuable post that will be a feast to those well versed in raagaas. Though I couldn't understand the details, i got the overall picture you have projected.

Murali,

I couldn't resist the temptation to share my quirky ideas of resemblances. Does this song have any resemblance to 'konja neeram ennai maranthen' from 'Siriththu vaazha vendum'? Please ignore this, if my perception turns out to be incorrect or silly.

Dear Murali,

I would like to state my recent experience, in identfying ragas. My daughter after coming back from her music class, was asked by me as to what she learnt for the day. She sang few lines of vara vallabah of Hamasdwanhi and i did identify it as Mohanam.

It is always better to expose the raga sayal brightly. Otherwise a mediocore rasika like me will continue to err blatantly.

Dear Parthavi,
The songs 'konja Neram' is not Hamsadhwani but likely to be in Saranga or Sanrang Thanrang. Not very sure. Should explore further.

Dear Mr. Sivasankaran,
I think it requires regular hearing and practice. You should be in a position to do an alaabana yourself mentally when you could be able to identify.

My experience in identifying raga started when I was 12 years old. My father tuned 100 Thirupighazhs in 100 ragas and covered many Carnatic and Hindustani ragas. We used to sing those songs every Saturday. From that experience initially I always tried to relate any tune to those in that 100 and try to come to conclusion. Many times it was wrong but that gave the experience of learning new ragas.

Later when I started knowing the Harmonium I could understand even better because of Aarohanam/Awarohanam details are available in books and thus started identifying how swaras play an important role in the raga structure.

Even now after this much of practice I can only find some ragas and not all.

Dear NYM, Your writing of this song itself is a masterpiece and this is one of the best analysis of MSV's unexplored territory Very Happy Honestly, after reading your post only i realised that its Hamsadwani special ! Well, thats the mystery of our Master no ! Indeed its Hamsadwani !

And you are on the spot yet again on MSV' s moving out of the raga and come back like a flash. I have realised this on many many songs.

Hamsadwani is a honey coated raga . Smile There are some special songs like vanitha maniye ( Adutha veetu penn ) . Ofcourse, it also ends with Vatapi Ganapathim Bhaje also.

IR tuned one beautiful song Sriranga Ranga nadhanai ( Mahanadhi ).

As you rightly said, its the Ni and D which distinguishes between Hamsadwani and Mohanam. Well, another minor change to M1 instead of G and you get into Sudhasaveri from Mohanam !

Sivasankaran Sir, You are right in a way on Mohanam as explained above. Unless one clearly hears the Ni ( Nishadham ) you will not realise the raga . So, when you get the sound of Ni strongly, you can conclude that its Hamsadwani ...

Another example of Ni is that Sirippil undaagum ragathile , a swara riot by the Master . TMS stretches the Niiii as he concludes the firs para on swarams before the pallavi takes off !

Dear Balaji,
Your information regarding the Sudha Saveri is an interesting subject for which a detailed post can be written. That would show how MSV knew every soul of a raga but does not care about theory.

Regarding IR tuning a nice song in Hamsadhwani, Yes it could be. I always rate IR as a person who has learnt both western classical and Carnatic music including theory and is a person who wish to execute the things he has learnt.
He is one of the very few learned and knowledgeable person in music.

I am quoting the words of Stephen Hawing the famous scientist who wrote the great book 'A Brief History of Time'
'Physics has come a long way and the current research is the unification of physics which combine all the four forces strong Nuclear forces, weak Nuclear forces, Electro magnetic forces and gravitational forces. Once all these forces are combined then science ends there'.

But he also quotes 'But all the physical characteristics cannot be measured at the point of singularity as physical properties breaks down at the point of Singularity'.

The uncertainty principle by Paul Dirac is like this. You cannot measure the speed of the particle as you cannot measure its position because the the light rays disturbs it. But his famous uncertainty principle are extensively used in electronics.

So understanding MSV with any theory is not a sin. Only thing is you have to be prepared to refine it. But as told by Stephen you cannot find out the source of his creativity. But how orderly his creations are, is the science towards which we need not shy away.

Einstein who would have probably felt he is closer to god than many others.

Dear Murali sir,
It began with pure grammar of two ragas, reached a beautiful climax at Kurukshetra, flowed downhill into the realm of physics, before ultimately merging with the ocean called MSV!!
Excellent appreciation!

dear Ram

with my little knowledge -(probably by reading murali's lessons seriously ,one day i would acquire some ), the first leaque seems to be ok , but think you should also add sudarshan .Vidyasagar there

to me MSV is alone in his territory ,because he writes and re writes the grammar with his every composition.

most of the composers ,starting from SG including Ilayaraja in his early days tried to emulate Mellisai Mannar , but cannot sustain that for too long
Reasons are
one MSV is NATURAL and GOD'S GIFT
two - like vaidy has said in another post - he is gifted with 'memory loss' so he is not unduly worried about the history or past songs and goes only with situations

NYM to find adjectives to your posting has become big task. a great writing as usual in the process we are also acquiring knowledge in addition to enjoyment of your postings

Dear Ram,

Talking of R.Sudarsanam (brother of R.Govardhanam, who was MSV's Assistant for a very long time), two of his outstanding numbers were - மலை சாய்ந்து போனால் சிலை ஆகலாம் from கார்த்திகை தீபம், and
காகிதத்தில் கப்பல் செய்து from அன்புக் கரங்கள், both the songs woderfully sung by TMS.

Regards,

Sudarsanam was the composer for Poompuhar, as he was for Parasakthi.

When we think of Sudarsanam, how can we forget azhagiya mithilai nagarnile from Annai, which I consider to be his masterpiece?

Sudarsanam has also composed music for Naanum oru pen, which has beautiful songs like Kannaa karumai nirak kannaa, poop pola poop pola pirakkum etc.

He was the Asthana composer for AVM and he was the one who created the signature tune for AVM.
